Goa is a unique place. For a long period its capital city - Old Goa was considered a major commercial and religious centre. Named as the ‘Rome of the East’ it gradually disappeared from the global map. However people led a quiet life building up their own culture with influences both from East and West. Almost forgotten then in the 60’s and 70’s, Goa became the insider tip of globe-trotters and the flower- power movement before being discovered, recognized and finally exploited by business in the 90’s. The sun and beach tourism was born. After that onslaught on the limited resources of Goa it was a wise move to reconsider the vast cultural heritage Goa is so rich of. This brochure is an introduction to the display of past and present culture; however, if used wisely it can open the door to see the wonders this land is made of...

In-house to both, the guest house Panjim Inn and the Gallery Gitanjali you find original paintings from local Goan as well as Indian and some European artists, sprawling all over the heritage premises. They spill across corridors and public areas and even extend to guest rooms.
A striking display area is the Chowk, the inner court of the Gallery as seen above. The brown terracotta tiles of the veranda roof and the red local floor and a mix of artificial and natural light filtering through the Chowk gives a surreal effect on the artworks on display.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM & PORTRAIT GALLERY, Old Goa
Old Goa
Old Goa: At distance of 10 kms to the East of Panjim lies the historic site of the Old city of Goa that at the time of Albuquerque’s conquest (1510) was in effect the second city after Bijapur and physically a compact Moslem town under Adil Shah. However, Afonso de Albuquerque made a short work of it when he stormed and took it over to house the centre of power of the Portuguese empire of the East
Archaeological Museum set up in 1964 is located at Old Goa and is maintained by A.S.I. (Archaeological Survey of India) This Museum houses different artifacts, which are displayed systematically in eight different galleries
CHURCHES
Basilica of Bom Jesus:
Se Cathedral: Most imposing of all churches at Old Goa. Its vaulted interior overwhelms the visitors by sheer grandeur. This Cathedral has five bells of which one is the famous Golden bell, the biggest in Goa and one of the best in the World. The church is dedicated to St. Catherine of AlexandriaChurch and the Convent of the Franciscans To the West of the Cathedral lies the old convent of St Francis of Assisi, which houses now the Archeological Museum under the Archaeological Survey of India. Attached to it is the Church of the Holy Spirit though commonly known as that of St. Francis of Assis’s Church. This church presents a unique portal of Manueline style. The interior wall of the main altar presents exquisite paintings depicting the life of Franciscan saints.
Built at the end of the 16th century it is the most popular and famous of all churches in Goa. The mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier, kept in a silver casket, are enshrined here. This church dedicated to Infant Jesus is now a world Heritage Monument. Church and the Convent of the TheatinesClose to the Arch of Viceroys, there is a large square where a beautiful facade of the church of Our Lady of Divine Providence, popularly known as the church of St. Cajetan is seen. This church bears very much the semblance of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.Church of Our Lady of RosaryOne of the earliest churches located at the Holy Mount and built at the instance of Alfonso de Albuquerque in Portuguese Gothic style. However, it came up in 1543, It contains a rich Mausoleum of the wife of Governor Garcia de Sa wrought in Gujarat style.
