HAPPY HANMER!There is no better place to start than theevents at Stratford last Friday, whichprovided the perfect setting to showcaseBritish Point-to-Pointing.The inaugural Subaru Restricted seriescame to its conclusion in the first raceon the card and it was a heart-warmingsuccess for Dabinett Moon, who isowned & trained, as well as being bred,by Fran and Christopher Marriott, andwas expertly ridden by Claire Hart. The pointtopoint.co.uk sponsored JohnCorbet Cup came next - it was the Irishraider Lord Fingal who took the prizefor the Jim Dreaper yard in a pulsatingfinish. Victory looked assured for a longway, but Connies Cross continued to eatup the ground in the dying stages andonly missed out by a head at the line.Gary Hanmer’s yard has been in fineform in recent weeks and they had thefirst of four winners across the weekendwhen What A Laugh landed the AGALadies Open Point-to-PointChampionship Final. Rose Loxton’sCurrent Event was a strong favouritefor the race but could only managesecond place as Hanmer’s Lady DudleyCup winner came home a ready winnerin the hands of Jane Williams.Gina Andrews had the opportunity toride What A Laugh in that race butopted for her regular mount, BertiesDream. However, traffic problemsmeant the former Cheltenham Festivalcompetitor didn’t make it in time,

leaving the country’s leading lady riderwithout a mount. In the next race, however, Gina madeamends in the style of a champion asshe produced a moment of magic thesport will remember for years to come -she galvanised David Kemp’s Moromanto a heart-stopping victory in thePertemps Network Stratford FoxhuntersChampion Hunters’ Chase. This was a real success for British Point-to-Pointing with Paint The Clouds, 3rdin the Cheltenham Foxhunters, andPacha Du Polder, 2nd in the Aintreeversion, coming home in second andthird respectively for the licensed yardsof Warren Greatrex and Paul Nicholls.Gary Hanmer completed a double onthe night in the concluding 2m1½fHunters’ Chase when Torn Asunderprovided Will Biddick with his 300thcareer success, nailing long-time leaderJoker Choker in the third race of thenight in which the winning distance wasjust a head.Hanmer’s winning form didn’t end there;he saddled a brace of winners atGarthorpe on Saturday. TimeGentlemen extended his unbeaten runbetween the flags to four by taking theMixed Open for Rob Jarrett, whilstAlfiethegreat and Derek Smith followed-up their Maiden win at Tabley byclaiming the Restricted.Sticking with yards based in the NorthWest, Cottage Oak and ExecutiveBenefit made Joe O’Shea’s trip toHexham worthwhile. The former

followed up his recent win in theDodson & Horrell Novice Riders Finalwith victory in the Mens Open, whereasthe latter showed great battling qualitiesto get up close home and extend hercurrent run to eight wins from ninestarts in Points.Tom Hamilton was aboard the O’Shea-trained duo, but he wasn’t the onlyjockey to bag a brace on the day. ChrisDawson took both Maiden races on thecard thanks to wins on Dicky Shore inthe 3m version, and Up To Al in the2m4f young horse contest.Elsewhere, Will Biddick registered adouble at the Bratton Down, partneringWhataknight (Mens Open) andBrandevin (Open Maiden, Div 2), takinghis season total to 66. Meanwhile, atHereford Rosies Peacock drew level withCock Of The Rock in the ‘LeadingHorse’ standings after completed aseventh success of the season with theever-present John Mathias in the saddle. And finally, our congratulations go toJohn Bush & Nicola Partridge who arethe lucky winners of our recent Estribospolo belt competition– you have bothwon a bespokebelt of yourchoice.

2015 WILLIAMS & LEWISTAKETHE

HONOURSAT EXCITING SEASON FINALE

******************

What a week that was! It started with abang on Monday 25th May atChaddesley Corbett when the Irish cameto town, Team GB won the challengeand we crowned our 2015 AGA AllComers Champions (The TroubledPartnership).

Then it finished with an almightyexplosion on Friday 29th May as weonce again descended on StratfordRacecourse for our season finale.

We set up camp in our new positionoverlooking the parade ring – whichwas given the thumbs up by all whoattended – where we provided somegreat entertainment for our guests, compered once again by the excellentCarl Evans.

The entertainment on the course wasjust as good and among the highlights

was the AGA Point-to-PointChampionship final.

This was won by 'AGA Queen', JaneWilliams, who steered What A Laugh toan 8 length victory, while Hannah Lewistook the AGA championship for ladyriders for the second season running.

William McGrath (AGA RangemasterGroup CEO) joked in his post racespeech that Hannah was 'stockpilingAGA cookers', and Hannah’s verygracious acceptance speech had theAGA man on the verge of tears.

That speech was preceded by greatefforts from Claire Hart, JacquelineCoward and Jane Williams and it wasalmost the last act of anothermemorable season for AGA, but we dohave one more treat to look forward to.

Sarah ‘Ripper’ Rippon (Ripper Vision) -who has done work across the racingindustry, equestrian world and beyond -is currently putting the finishing touchesto our video of the Anglo-IrishChallenge.

This is definitely one to look forward to(I know, because I’ve had a sneakpreview) and it will be launched nextThursday – 11th June, full details will bein next week’s Go Pointing.

All that remains is for me to thankeveryone for their support throughoutthe season (there are too many to namehere) and to remind everyone in thepointing world that if you're thinking ofbuying an AGA cooker then call me, theAGA man, on 07768 474570.

Christopher and Fran Marriott’s seven-year-old mare, Dabinett Moon wonthe first Subaru Restricted Point-to-Point Series Final at StratfordRacecourse in dramatic style andaffirmed that Subaru’s Point-to-Pointseries is now cemented at the core ofthe sport. Jockey, Claire Hart rode adetermined finish, winning by twolengths to see off Tom Hamilton’sFlash Garden who had led from threeout after the favourite, Ruddy Article, faded.

Dabinett Moon hails from theMarriott dynasty of home-bredPointers that have seen manysuccesses over the years from theirOxfordshire base. She has been

present at three meetings that havefeatured Subaru Restricted qualifiersthroughout the season, firstly scoring aMaiden victory at Cocklebarrow inJanuary, a meeting that was organisedby Christopher Marriott himself.Following a disappointing run in theSouth Midlands Area Club Subaruqualifier back at Whitfield in Marchshe then qualified with victory at theV.W.H’s Sinnington meeting beforeachieving two further wins and asecond in a mares race and atIntermediate level. The SubaruRestricted Point-to-Point Series Finalvictory sealed one of the mostsuccessful season’s for jockey Claire

Hart, one of five female riders in thethirteen strong field.

The clash between Executive Benefit(Beneficial), trained in Cheshire by JoeO’Shea, and Splendid Blue (Blueprint),who is owned and trained inNorthumberland by Jo Boswell, promised to be a close affair, and livedup to that expectation. Splendid Blue, ridden by new northern areachampion Nick Orpwood, led fourout, but was passed by the TomHamilton-ridden Executive Benefitafter the next jump.

Refusing to be shaken off, SplendidBlue put in a better leap at the finalfence and went in front again on therun-in, only to be passed near the lineas eight-year-old Executive Benefitfought back to win by a head. Sixmares ran, and Oaklands Elise (PrinceDaniel) was a further 20 lengths backin third.

O’Shea, who owns Executive Benefitin partnership with Richard Hewitt, said: “What a fantastic race, and agreat way to end the northern areaseason. Tom gave our mare a greatride and is a star of the future. He saidshe was in second gear all the way, butwhen he saw a stride and asked her tocome up at the last she put down.

“The other mare put in a fantastic leapand went ahead, and I thought, ‘oh no,we’re going to be second’ butExecutive Benefit fought back to win.

“She’s out in a field now, but could beat her peak next season as a nine-year-old. One day she’ll be a valuablebroodmare.”

This has been the second season ofThoroughbred Breeders’ Associationsponsored Point-to-Points, which aredesigned to promote mares andencourage people to breed, buy and

race them with a view to proving theirlong-term value as broodmares in theirown right.

Louise Kemble, chief executive of theThoroughbred Breeders’ Association, said: “It’s been a fantastic season ofTBA Mares’ races and we are delightedto have provided even moreopportunities for mares to race atmeetings across the country.

“Our races have seen some high-classmares doing incredibly well and somelovely stories emerge. A particularhighlight was the home- and British-bred Dabinett Moon going on to takea series title under Rules after winningone of our TBA races [at Mollingtonin April]. We hope that many ownersand breeders have benefited from oursponsorship and thank all the huntsfor their work in putting the race daystogether.”

BORDER at HEXHAMSunday, 31 Mayby Peter BurgonThe Northern Area season ended on ahigh with 52 runners, including 25from Yorkshire and two fromCheshire, in Sunday's Border fixture atHexham Racecourse and it was a caseof doubles all round for jockeys, ChrisDawson and Tom Hamilton as well astrainer, Joe O'Shea and owner, RichardHewitt.

Dicky Shore set the ball rolling forDawson in the Ward Hadaway OpenMaiden Race. After tracking thefavourite, Stagecoach Jasper from sixout, Dawson's mount took it up at thelast and stayed on well to score by twolengths. This was a first Hexhamwinner for Catton near Thirsk owner/breeder, Mary Dodgson, who said ofher 7-year-old gelding: "He has had afew niggling problems and been slowto come to hand." He gained valuableracecourse experience last year in threeBumpers and a Novice Hurdle beforebeing sent between the flags this termand was making only his thirdappearance of 2015 at Hexham.

Dawson completed his double onrecent acquisition, Up To Al, who was

backed down from 10/1 to 2/1 in thetwo and a half mile Carrs Billington(Wooler) Open Maiden Race. The 7-year-old had finished unplaced fivetimes and failed to finish thrice in hiseight outings for Andrew Nichollsearlier this season. This may not havebeen the strongest contest but he wasalways going well and swept past thetwo leaders approaching two outbefore sprinting clear to beat HandsOn Scarlet by seven lengths. Dawson,31 on Wednesday, said: "I've only hadhim a few weeks but managed to gethis back problems sorted out and afirst-time tongue tie made a bigdifference today as he had beenstruggling to get home in his racespreviously. He quickened up really wellwhen I gave him a squeeze on thehome turn."

Joe O'Shea made the 340 mile roundtrip from Kelsall near Chesterworthwhile when his only runners atthe meeting, the Richard Hewitt-owned duo, Cottage Oak andExecutive Benefit both obliged in thehands of Tom Hamilton. Afterheading Lucky Cody four out in theNorthumberland Sporting Clays MensOpen Race, Cottage Oak prevented

his rival from getting back on termsand had three lengths in hand at theline, with the consistent KilmacallogueBay a further ten lengths away in third.O'Shea doesn't believe in keeping hishorses wrapped up in cotton wool andthis was the 12-year-old gelding'seleventh start in the last six months.Hamilton, who had finished runner-upon his only rides at Stratford and Yorkon Friday and Saturday respectively, said: "He was idling when he hit thefront and just does enough."

In one of the most exciting finishes ofthe season, Executive Benefit justedged out Splendid Blue by a head inthe TBA Mares Club Members Race. However, after leading from three out,Hamilton's mount looked in troublewhen headed half way up the run-inbefore digging deep to regain theinitiative again near the line. Like herstable companion, Executive Benefithas been kept busy this season sincescoring first time out at Barbury Castleon December 7 and this was her sixthwin from ten starts. Hamilton added:"She was in second gear most of theway and did well to battle back afterlosing momentum with a mistake atthe last."

There was a popular local success forBellingham jockey, Charles Carr onJim Gledson's gelding, Clonea Powerin the Par Petroleum Restricted Race.Always prominent, the 8-year-old tookcommand after two out, leaving hisYorkshire rivals treading water as heforged clear to win by twelve lengths.Carr, 35, who built Gledson'sfarmhouse and now looks after hishorses, only started race-riding threeyears ago and had his only otherwinner on Clonea Power at Dalston in2013. He said: "I got a breather intohim coming down the hill after fourout and he finished full of running. He is a very honest individual butmust have decent ground and staysforever."

After a trio of near misses at Dalston,Corbridge and Mosshouses, Rolecarrdeservedly ended his season on awinning note in the Bill AitchisonLadies Open Race. Always close up, hewas sent on after three out byCharlotte Dun and kept Oscar Stanley

at bay down the home straight to scoreby two lengths. The 12-year-old'strainer, Jane Dun said: "He hasenjoyed a four week break sinceMosshouses as Charlotte was busywith her end of year Accountancy andEconomics exams at Heriot WattUniversity." EXMOOR at BRATTON DOWNSunday, 31 Mayby Granville TaylorOvernight rain gave way to a cool, blustery afternoon at Bratton Downwhere it was business as usual with adouble for the unstoppablecombination of trainer Jack Barberand jockey Will Biddick.

The progressive Whataknight wasgiven a typically patient Biddick ride towin the Mens Open. “He was rushedoff his feet for the first two miles so Ihad to be patient. You can’t go quickand keep going quick here,” explainedthe rider on the verge of securing hisfourth consecutive Nationalchampionship. Six-year-oldWhataknight remains unbeaten in hisfour races this season.

Trainer Jack Barber has enjoyed aremarkable season in winning his firsttrainers championship, increasing hiswinning tally from 14 last year to 50this season. His half century came upwhen Brandevin, making hisracecourse debut, overcame greenness

to win a section of the Maiden whichwas divided on the day.

Once again Biddick nursed andeducated his mount from the backuntil swooping to lead up the finalclimb. “He was really green and ticksevery box. There is room forimprovement in him,” reportedBiddick, who was enjoying his 66thwinner of the season and whosecareer successes in the saddle hadtopped the 300 mark at Stratford just afew days before. Four-year-oldBrandevin was purchased at theCheltenham breeze up sales lastDecember by Tom Malone. He is nowin the ownership of Colm Donlon andRichard Webb. “He has needed timebut he works well and jumps well,”said Jack Barber.

The race was marred when Jo Buckwas fired into the ground when hermount Strong Hurricane fell at thesecond fence. Jo was concussed andspent the night in Barnstaple hospital. She was reported to have facial injuriesbut thankfully a scan revealed nobroken bones.

Biddick’s mount Master Max wasrunner up in the other Maiden divisionwon by Matt Hampton on six-year-oldmare Spendajennie. LeeDrowne, who works in the NigelHawke yard, sent his mount to thefront at the third last before drawingright away from Father Owen. Placedover hurdles in Ireland for MouseMorris, the winner is now with KeithCumings, and had been knocking atthe door in his English points thisseason.

The Flying Doc treated her nineRestricted rivals with disdain. Themare was cruising coming to the lastand Robbie Henderson only had to letout an inch of rein coming up the hillto overcome A Real Cliché and WinterGarden. “She is a pocket rocket andjumped brilliantly,” confirmed the

SCENE & HEARDThe sponsor’s logo on Gina Andrews’sbreeches said it all. Standing out abovethe lettering “residential.rural.commercial”was the letting agency company’sname, best. Was there to be a poll forthe ride of the season, Gina wouldwin it hands down for her victory inthe Pertemps Network ChampionHunters’ Chase on Barry Belchem’sMoroman, trained by David Kemp.

The eight-year-old adopted his usualfront-running role, and despitejumping slightly right-handed at timeskept galloping remorselessly to repelall his challengers until headedapproaching the last by the favouritePaint The Clouds, who looked odds-on to retain the trophy he won lastyear. Moroman was having none of it,though, and under an inspired ride heclawed back the four lengths deficit toget up close home.

“I thought I was cooked when he[Paint The Clouds] came past,”admitted Gina, “but two strides afterthe last I noticed him starting towander while we were still running onat the same pace. I was saying ‘Don’tcome yet!’ to the winning post,” she

laughed. “Usually it can’t come soonenough!”

It was a superb training performanceby David Kemp, and was the perfectresult for Point-to-Pointing and thegenuine amateurs, with the second, third and fourth all being owned andtrained by big players in the NationalHunt world, while back in fifth wasQuinz, who had beaten Moroman atCheltenham when in receipt of 10lbs.

David, whose 14-strong string wouldcome, in the Point-to-Point world, intothe “slightly larger side of medium”category, would put some of hisprofessional counterparts to shamewith his combination of ability andimprovisation. He has no facilities athome and has to box his horses everyday, either to a neighbouring farm, where he can use the stubble fieldsand sand tracks, or into ThetfordForest with its variety of paths andobstacles.

Essex-based Barry Belchem is one ofthe sport’s most enthusiastic owners. He has had horses in the Kemp yard

for eight years, but had his first Point-to-Point runner in 1966. “It camethird,” he recalled, “so I thought thiswas an easy job!” He has had severalsuccesses between the flags since then, but after 49 years of Point-to-Pointloyalty, there could be no moredeserving winner of this prestigiousprize.

“Just to have a runner in this race isamazing, and I was delighted to thinkthat we were going to be second,” saidDavid, whose only disappointment, ifthere was one, was that he is stillsidelined with an injured ankle andthus unable to take the ride himself.“The only horse I’ve had before whomight have had a chance wasCantarinho [on whom he won theJohn Corbet Cup in 2004] but thingsdidn’t work out with him.”

He was quick to hand credit to groomJimmy Down, who rides Moromanevery day and gets on with him athome far better than the trainer doeshimself. “He’s a nervy horse, and is ona daily mineral supplement, but Jimmy

never gets annoyed with him, and letshim alone.”

Formerly trained by Colin Bowe, towhose regime he was unsuited, and forone run in Britain by Andy Hobbswhen owned by Martin Oliver, whohad spotted signs of ability in his runat Aghabullogue, Moroman wasbought on Barry’s behalf by Martin’stwin brother Michael. “I would havesold him after his Maiden win becauseI thought that was as good as he was,”admitted David.

Although the going was officiallygood, there seemed little doubt thatthe torrential rain which had fallen atintervals during the day had eased theground, making it softer than ideal forthe winner.

“He likes to go right-handed, but allthe courses we want to run on are left-handed,” smiled David, explaining thetendency had become more of a habitthan anything, and was due toMoroman having had a slight neckproblem, which caused him to hang, inhis earlier days.

Gina, who received a two-day banfrom the stewards for using her whipabove the permitted level, had earlierbeen deprived of the opportunity towin an AGA by the failure to arrive atthe course before declarations closedof her intended AGA Ladies’ OpenPoint-to-Point Championship Finalmount Berties Dream, his connectionshaving underestimated the travellingtime required from Newmarket in theFriday afternoon traffic.

The ladies’ Point-to-Point championelect could have chosen to partnerWhat A Laugh but had opted to stayloyal to her East Anglian mount, andthus had to sit and watch as JaneWilliams deputised to great effect onGary Hanmer’s charge.

Jane, whose points tally in thechampionship series was insufficientto allow her to win the cooker – whichwent for the second successive year toHannah Lewis – generously offeredthe ride back to Gina, but under theRules of Racing last-minutesubstitutions are not allowed in thosecircumstances.

Ten weeks earlier, when Gary wasbusy with two runners at Overton,What A Laugh was one of the horseswhich had escaped the confines of hispremises when a gate wasinadvertently left open.

“Some of them galloped down theroad for seven or eight miles,”explained Gary. “He didn’t go that far,but when he was found he was onthree legs and we thought the otherone was broken. The toe clip [on hisshoe] had actually punctured his foot, which had to be poulticed for a fewdays. In hindsight,” he continued, “thebreak did him no harm, as he hasn’tbeen as busy as usual and came herefresh.”

Like David Kemp, Gary had beenconcerned about the rain, but he feltthat the race distance, 2m7f, hadproved beneficial as opposed to the3m4f of the meeting’s feature race, in

which What A Laugh had previouslyfailed to shine.

Owner Richard Davies-Cooke’s wifeSarah was unable to be present, as shewas helping their daughter Alice, 14,prepare for a one-day event thefollowing day. Sarah was watching ontelevision at home, and just over anhour later she had further reason tocheer when her husband’s colourswere carried to victory in the 2m1fTechnicair Air Conditioning &Ventilation Engineers Open Hunters’Chase by Torn Asunder.

Held up in the early stages, TornAsunder worked his way through thefield to join Joker Choker at the last, and in another of the evening’s nail-biting finishes he pulled out justenough to get up a few strides fromthe line to give Gary his first HunterChase training double.

It was a 300th career success for riderWill Biddick, who was another to earna two-day whip ban for his efforts.

Torn Asunder was one of the horsesout of harm’s way at Overton on theday some of his stablemates wentawol.

“We took him there to try to qualifyfor Aintree, but that didn’t happen,”said Gary. “This was actually lastchance saloon for him. He shows somuch at home but has been sodisappointing on the track. It’s beendifficult to work out his best trip, buthe does love passing horses.”

He is a strong ride so is alwayspartnered by his trainer at home, and12 days earlier Gary teamed up withthe eight-year-old to win the Legends’Charity race at Tabley. Gary was not, though, wearing Richard’s colours onthat occasion because “He couldn’t fitinto them!” revealed his wife Karen.

The following day at Garthorpe Garysaddled two more winners, TimGentleman (Rob Jarrett) andAlfiethegreat (Derek Smith), to end hisPoint-to-Point training career with abang. He is due to be granted a fulllicence in the next few days.

New to national Point-to-Pointsponsorship this season has beenSubaru, whose Restricted series hasbeen a resounding success. Therecould have been no more popularwinner of the final, from which fivehorses had to be balloted out, thanChris and Fran Marriott’s home-bredDabinett Moon, whose victory gaverider Claire Hart a share of the leadingHunter Chase Rider title.

Dabinett Moon is named, as are all theMarriotts’ horses, after a variety ofapple, a theme which started with thepurchase of a mare named WindfallVI.

“She’s a lovely easy mare, though shedoes get in a bit of a state when she’stravelling,” said Fran of the only horsecurrently in her yard. “Chris rides herevery day and I do the mucking out!”

It is little short of a miracle that thedaughter of Midnight Legend wasborn at all, as her dam Miss Crabapple, who was 22 at the time, explainedFran, had to have 20 feet of gutremoved when she was seven monthspregnant.

Dabinett Moon herself was sent toCharlie Longsdon but failed to getonto the course due to having threebone chips removed from her knee, and on return to her owners sustaineda cut to her pastern.

The last offspring of Miss Crabappleis the five-year-old The Applebobber, who has been sold to Claire and whohas had just one run this year atKingston Blount.

The coveted John Corbet Cup,presented for the pointtopoint.co.ukChampion Novices’ Hunters’ Chase, went to Ireland for the first time sinceits inception in 1965, courtesy of theJim Dreaper-trained Lord Fingal.

“We saw him in the field and boughthim from Jimmy Mangan, who bred

him,” explained owner DeclanO’Farrell, who described Lord Fingalas “more of a family pet” andadmitted that he had long wanted totarget this particular race. He is nowconsidering sending the son of BrianBoru into handicap company.

“He loves to hear his hooves rattle, but he’s too big to run on that type ofground,” said rider Steven Clements ofhis mount, who had already landedthree Irish Hunter Chases in 2015prior to this triumph.

Declan, who produces signage forracecourses, also owns the winner’sthree-year-old half-brother. Their damLine Jade comes from the family ofthe useful Escartefigue, who wonAintree’s Martell Cup Chase for DavidNicholson and Richard Johnson in1998.

It was a first success at Stratford forSteven, who is well-known to thiscountry’s racegoers. He came toBritain as a Conditional in 2010 to joinColin Tizzard, for whom he won theJohnny Henderson Grand AnnualChase at the 2011 Cheltenham Festivalon Oiseau De Nuit, and after revertingto amateur status due to weightstruggles, he moved to Paul Nichollsfor a year.

For how long have you beentraining? Five years.

Where are you based? HackpenFarm, Barbury Castle (a mile down theroad from the Point-to-Point course).

Do you combine training withanother job or profession? No. I didthe office thing for a while and I’mhoping I’ll never have to do it again!

What training facilities do you haveavailable? 23 loose boxes, all yearturnout, 3 grass gallops, 3 sets ofschooling fences and use of AlanKing’s Sharpridge allweather gallop, forwhich I am eternallygrateful to Alan andNigel Bunter. I simplywouldn’t be able totrain without it.

How many horsesdo you train? Thisseason I had 12 intraining plus thebreakers, pre trainersand box rests.

Do you train for justyourself and familyor for otherOwners? I’mcurrently half andhalf - I am very luckyto have the support ofmy dad [Norman],who has six intraining with me plusI have another sixowned by outsideowners.

Are you from a racing background?Hunting and Pointing. My dad andgrandfather have always had Pointersand we always had one or two aroundwhen I was growing up. Dad also rodea lot himself.

What was the first winner you sentout – name, owner, rider, date, course? Declans Choice at BrattonDown, 31st May 2008. Owned by myfather, Norman Thomas, and riddenby his godson and a great familyfriend, Richard Mason.

Of which horse performance areyou most proud? Dona, who won theCountryside Alliance Conditions Raceat Badbury Rings last season at 100-1.I very much doubt I’ll train a 100-1

winner ever again! Also Full Trottlewinning his maiden Hunter Chase atFontwell last week. He finally settled, jumped and ran a proper race but alsoreally dug deep in very testingconditions when it mattered. He’sbeen rather hard work and so it was aparticularly rewarding win!

Did you race-ride before youstarted training? I ride a little bit, purely for fun. I’m not particularlygood and I probably shouldn’t as Ican’t really afford to get hurt but it’stoo addictive not too!

How did you start training and whohas been most influential on yourtraining career? I was working inSports PR for a while and I simplycouldn’t stand being in an office. Idecided to quit my job and I workedfor Alan King for a brief spell beforegetting totally hooked and deciding totake the plunge and start training. Itcoincided with Dad retiring fromfarming and downsizing to Hackpenwhich was the perfect yard to convert.

Both my father and Alan King havebeen very influential. Dad has a verygood eye for a horse and does a lot ofthe buying and I wouldn’t have evencontemplated setting up if I didn’thave use of his yard and Alan is verykind and helpful to me– not only does

he allow me to use his gallops but isalso always on hand for advice.

Which jockeys do you useregularly? I seemed to have gotthrough jockeys this season! Tom Ellishad taken over from Sam Painting andwas doing an amazing job until webroke him! Charlie Dando, JohnnyBailey and Katy Lyons have beenriding since. Hopefully they’ll all wantto keep riding for us next season.

What car do you drive? A ratherbattered Mitsubishi Shogun Sport.

What kind of musicdo you like? Prettymuch anything. I’venever been coolenough to get into themusic scene but amvery partial to a bit ofEd Sheeran, and I lovea bit of rock’n’roll at ahunt ball!

What are yourfavourite films andTV programmes?Favourite film wouldhave to be Legends ofthe Fall, although Ihave watched TheHangover trilogy moretimes than I shouldprobably admit! TVwise, it’s got to beGavin and Stacey.

Describe yourperfect night in andperfect night out:Perfect night in –

curled up next to the fire with my dog,a Dominoes pizza and watching amovie. Perfect night out – going outwith a good group of friends, gettinghideously drunk and dancing all night. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the localpub or a London nightclub, its allabout who you’re with.

What do you do to take a breakfrom training – any hobbies orfavourite holiday destinations? Inthe winter any time off is spenthunting. I’m a total sun worshipper soalways go away for a couple of weeksevery summer. I m happy to goanywhere that’s hot but my mum’s gota house in Turkey which is prettyuseful! I generally love any sport andcan never be inactive for too long!

Who would be your ideal travellingcompanions to the races? FleurSmallman and Charlie Lake - my twobest friends and massive supporters. Idragged them the whole way toHolnicote last season; luckily we wonso there was lots of champagneflowing. Pulling out of the course wehad a slight hiccup involving the lorryand a ditch…. By the time we d gotthe lorry out we’d drunk 3 bottles ofchampagne, a bottle of port and madea start on a bottle of whisky. We gotthe drinking games going and thejourney flew by on the way home.

Who are your biggest heroes – in orout of racing?Obviously A.P butthat might be a littleunoriginal! MartinPipe’s record is quiteincredible. Not onlywas he crownedchampion trainer 15times but he alsototally revolutionisedtraining.

What has been yourfunniest incident atthe races? The lookon Sam Painting’s faceas I legged him up onto Full Trottle whileexplaining the reasonwe were so late intothe paddock wasbecause he hadflipped overbackwards in thehorsebox whilst tryingto saddle him… Withhindsight maybe Ishouldn’t have said anything tillafter… He did give him a very goodride to win though!

Which particular horse would youlike to train – in Points and underRules? Under Rules, Kauto Star backin his day and in Points, anything outof Jack Barber’s yard.

If you hadn’t taken up training, what would you have done instead?Probably still be in PR, a lot richer buttotally miserable!

Which horses do you have at themoment that you would say havegood potential? If Full Trottleimproves as much again next season as

he has this, he will be very exciting.I’ve also just bought a maiden calledBerwick Bassett who I think a lot of –he’s been very impressive at home andwas looking good when being broughtdown three from home on his debut atMollington recently.

What ambitions do you have inracing? Just to train every horse in mycare to its fullest potential. That’s allyou can do!

What are your favourite coursesand meetings - and why?Siddington, as it’s our VWH meetingand so winners there are special and

Whitfield, as they do a great job withthe ground and watering and ourhorses always seem to run well there. The Old Berks at Lockinge is myfavourite for the social side, especiallyif we don’t have runners!

What do you consider to be thebiggest challenges for Point-to-Point trainers? Finances! You have tobe very careful what you charge, it’s socompetitive and it’s only an amateursport which makes it tough going. It isno cheaper bedding and feeding apointer than it is a NH horse yet wecannot charge the same prices. I amvery lucky that we own our own yard -

I’d struggle to be able to do what I amdoing if I had to pay rent.

What are your opinions on thechanges in Point-to-Pointing inrecent years? I think it’s starting to gothe right way. Changing the NoviceRider status from 3 wins to 5 was agood move, although I do like the ideaof Novice Riders being able to claim.I’d certainly use them more if it meantgetting 7lbs off a horse’s back. I alsolove what the AGA Man, DavidSimpson, is doing for the profile ofthe sport.

What developments do you thinkwould benefit thesport in the future? It’s all about the raceplanning and makingour racing morecompetitive. I’mlooking forward toseeing what changesthe race planningcommittee have comeup with and amhoping they’ll really dosome shaking up. Weneed more races tohelp the true Point-to-Point horse at thelower end of the scale.

There’s not many ofus that can take on theAeriels and CurrentEvents of this worldand if your horse isn’tOpen quality, it’s veryhard knowing whereto go once a horse has

won its Maiden, Restricted andIntermediate. Maybe some more non-Rules runners races would help this, not just in Maiden races but upthrough the ranks too?

Also rather a controversial one istrying to keep NH trainers out ofHunter Chases. I know there is anargument that we are down on HunterChase runners and so we need them tokeep numbers up but I think there isalso an argument that the Point-to-Pointers are being scared off by theNH trainers - they simply don’t wantto take on the professionals, which isunderstandable.

PEMBROKESHIRE at TRECOEDSaturday, 06 Juneby Maria EvansThe Welsh Point-to-Point season, asalways, ends at Trecoed with thePembrokeshire Hunt, and with 80entries coming from far and wide, andWelsh Championships to be won, itlooks like Saturday could be anexciting season finale. The currentgoing is good, and the recent rainfall issure to keep the ground decent.

The first race, off at 2pm, is the HuntMembers with five entries; both MarcBarber and Wyn Morris have twoeach. Hunky Dorey and TeenageKicks make up the Wyn Morris duo,and the latter will be hoping to retainthe trophy for this race with regularpilot Steph Rogers, after pulling up lasttime out at the Banwen Miners. HunkyDorey has had a consistent season, and deserves some success soon.

Marc Barber’s Brideberry was a winnerlast time out, and should go well here.Barber’s other entry, Anto Massini, isan Irish recruit who is yet to run.Market Maker makes up the five, andhas met a few better than him so farthis season.

In the Mens Open, Rosies Peacockand John Mathias will be hoping to goone better than Cock of the Rock inthe Leading Point-to-Point horse of

the season – for 24 hours at leastanyway, with Cock of the Rock likelyto run in the Mens Open at BrattonDown on Sunday.

It may not be easy for Rosies Peacock, however; there are 14 entered in theMens Open at Trecoed, including theDunraven Bowl winner DesertmoreView, who was last seen unseatingjockey John Mathias in a Hunter Chaseat Fontwell.

Trainer Marc Barber also has theconsistent Kimora entered, but themain danger may come from theMickey Bowen-trained Sir Du Bearn, who came home in front of RosiesPeacock last time out in a Point-to-Point, at Lower Machen. He is alsoentered in the Ladies Open, and maywell run here under Jodie Hughes, who partnered the nine-year-old atStratford last Friday.

The Ladies Open looks just ascompetitive as the Mens Open, with18 entered, a handful of which havealready won an Open this season.Watch the Birdie is an obvious pick ofthe crop, and a cut on her leg afterwinning at Lydstep last time out musthave healed in time for an entry here.

Cygnet and Jodie Hughes havebecome quite a pair in Hunter Chases, having won two in two weeks last

month, and if stable mate Sir DuBearn is preferred for the Mens Open,we may see Cygnet do well here.Tallow Fair and Carnglave Cat wereboth winners last time out for TimUnderwood, and they’ll be hoping thelong trip West will be worth it forthem.

15 are entered in the Restricted, andCaptain Camelot, who won his maideneasily last time out at Lydstep, looksthe main danger. Leading trainer JackBarber has Mangans Turn entered –the gelding is Barber’s only entry forthe meeting. He’s run a handful oftimes this season, only passing thewinning post in the lead once.

Redbridge Rebel was a close secondlast time out, losing out to GoodGrammar and Nick Williams in thedying strides at Lydstep. That run wasan improvement on his performancesduring the rest of the season, and ifthere’s more to come, he should gowell.

The Intermediate has attracted tenentries, where another TimUnderwood trained horse,Commanche Conflict, looks like itcould go well here. Mister Bricolagehas given connections some great daysthis season, and should run a goodrace once again here.

Milled has knocked on the door acouple of times this season, and theMarc Barber duo of A Country Mileand Star Rise, on their day, could runbig races.

The Maiden race looks to be wideopen. Princess Tina, who looked alikely winner last time out until headedin the dying strides, should go wellagain, and the same goes forRathkenny Lady, who was in the samerace that day, and lost second placenear the finish. Both are rated thesame, and there isn’t much betweenthem, so it could be an exciting finaleagain.

Overtoyoujay and To Hell And Backare two Marc Barber-trained horseswho could lose their maiden tag at thefinal time of asking this season, andJoshella has been there or thereaboutssince joining the Amber Griffiths yardin April.

The Keith Cumings-trainedWhenharrymetsally ran well at thiscourse when third in a TBA MaresClub Members last month and couldput up another strong challenge.

Overland Flyer ran a good two lengthssecond at Holnicote behind Katie'sMassini, and is from the Jack Barberteam - they could add to theirimpressive season’s total of 50winners.

In the Exmoor Hay & Straw LtdIntermediate race, Fourstar Riverlooks to be the one they all have tocatch, having been knocking on thedoor of an Intermediate win allseason, including when a neck secondto Otis Tarda at the earlier Maymeeting here.

Broken Eagle is an interesting outsideraider for the Alan Hill team; he couldfollow up on his seconds at Larkhilland Kingston Blount under jockey JoeHill. The Flying Doc won here at thelast meeting and could progress well,as could Credit Crunched, who couldalso come back for more having beenunlucky to unseat Johnny Bailey earlyon at the last meeting.

Cock Of The Rock is unbeaten in hislast seven runs this season for owner-rider Harry Cobden, including victory

in a Mens Open at Littlewindsor.Harry is currently leading the NationalGentleman Novice Rider title by fourwins. SOUTH MIDLANDS AREAPOINT-TO-POINT REVIEW 2014/15Undoubtedly the star performer of the South Midlands season was a seven-year-old mare. DabinettMoon, a grand-daughter of her great broodmare Windfall, is the only horse in Fran Marriott’sChipping Norton yard and started the season a once-raced maiden writes Jake ExelbyClaire Hart and Dabinett Moon Photo: Neale Blackburn chasdog.com

Page 26: Go Pointing | 03 June 2015

#gopointing 26 www.pointtopoint.co.uk

She won four Point-to-Points, was theleading mare in the South MidlandsArea and also clinched the area ownerstitle for Fran and husbandChristopher. She concluded her seasonwith a Hunter Chase debut atStratford, where she stormed homeunder a perfectly judged ride fromClaire Hart to win the SubaruRestricted Final.

Claire had an excellent season as bothrider and trainer. The win on DabinettMoon made her joint-leading HunterChase rider alongside Ciaran Gethings, she currently stands third in thenational championship, and she finallyfulfilled her long-held ambition to beSouth Midlands Area top female rider– a contest she won in a canter! Bestknown for her partnership withPalypso De Creek, on whom she haswon a Point and three Hunter Chasesthis year, she is also the rider ofAlskamatic, as well as Vincitore andKazuri Kate, both of whom she trainsherself.

Once again, the leading trainer on thescene was Aston Rowant trainer AlanHill, last year’s National ChampionTrainer. While not able to retain hiscrown – Jack Barber claimed that titlecomfortably – his 29 winners (at thetime of writing) represented a newpersonal best. The highlight of hisseason was a double at theCheltenham Hunter Chase meeting, with Harbour Court and Quinz, bothof whom returned to form this termafter a barren spell. Other topperformers trained by Hill includeConsigliere, unbeaten in Points eitherside of an unsuccessful tilt at the

Cheltenham Foxhunters, the admirablyconsistent Start Royal, whose fourOpen successes took his career tally to22 and last season’s Intermediate Finalwinner Sharp Suit, who won two aswell as finishing a close second to topperformers It Was Me and Alskamatic.

Alan’s Cheltenham double emulatedPauline and Doug Harkin, whoachieved the same feat in 2014 withPopaway and Doctor Kingsley. Whileneither of their stable stars hit thesame heights this time around – thelatter in particular becomingincreasingly quirky – they both wonraces, but where the Harkins excelledwas with their youngsters. Out OfRange was the most successful ofthese, graduating from Maidencompany to win a Fontwell HunterChase, while other promising typesinclude Exclusive Rights, GloryHunter and Sea Rock.

James Henderson, formerly based inBelvoir country where he was Masterof Foxhounds, has moved to Buscotnear Faringdon and now qualifies hishorses with the Old Berks. He onlyhad six in training, all owned byhimself and all ridden by son Freddie, and five of them won, including twoformer inmates of cousin Nicky’sNational Hunt stable in Otto TheGreat and Thanks For Coming. SayNo is potentially the best of all ofthem, but he went wrong whenwinning the Lord Ashton of Hyde’sCup at Cocklebarrow on January –hopefully he’ll be back next year.

Tim Underwood had no Tempelpiratein 2015 – last year’s National winning-most horse had to miss the season –

but he had another good year as atrainer, although plans to win a race asa rider at the ripe young age of 67 didnot come to fruition! His winnersincluded Carnglave Cat, Tick TockTim and the useful Tallow Fair whoreturned to form after injury, winningan incident-packed race at KingstonBlount before scoring at Whitfield.

Laura Thomas continues to progressup the training ranks and her seasonhighlight was winning a FontwellHunter Chase with Full Trottle. Shealso won with the talented but fragileCredit Crunched and the improvingSwingbridge among several VWH-qualified horses she trains for herfather Norman. Fran Nimmo’s bestday came outside the area, with adouble at Brocklesby Park on MagicSky, who she rode herself, anddebutante Fortunata Fashions, whosubsequently made 55,000 guineas atthe Cheltenham sales. She is alsoresponsible for Sirius Star, who lookedpromising when winning at Whitfield.Lynn Redman, best known for herassociation with Home By Midnight, trained the useful Goodnight Vienna,a dual winner who was a game fifth inthe Intermediate Final at Cheltenham, and has a number of good-lookingyoung horses in her yard, includingfirst-time-out Lower Machen winnerLa Viva El Diva.

Two prominent local trainers who hadquiet seasons by their own highstandards were Fred Hutsby andRobert Waley-Cohen. Fred won aHunter Chase with Penmore Mill andintroduced the promising KristianGray (no whip jokes please), but stable

stalwart Rash Move only appearedonce and the yard had the misfortuneto lose the talented Vertical Glen atHorseheath after a stunning winningseasonal debut at Larkhill. For theWaley-Cohen stable, Rumbavu did notrun at all and Storm Lantern, whocreated such a good impression in hisfirst two outings, disappeared afterJanuary. Atomic Tangerine alsoimpressed on her first Pointing startwhen beating Posh Totty and the ill-fated My Flora but disappointedafterwards. And talking of horsesrunning in the famous chocolate andorange silks, what price seeing LongRun appear in a Point-to-Point nextseason?

Among the trainers with smallerstrings, Christopher Henn’s bestperformer was Legal Legend, whosethree wins included a Hunter Chaseand who was fourth in theIntermediate Final at Cheltenham.

Michael Kehoe only trained twohorses, but they were useful dual Openwinner Brackloon High and CelticIntrigue, who only won a Maiden butwas runner-up no less than five times.Divine Intavention returned to Pointsafter a spell under Rules for FrancescaMoller and won two Opens, while herimproving Dandan also won two. AndJohn Johnston, as well as introducingthe promising Native Pride, finallymanaged to coax a race out of long-standing maiden Flicka’s Witness, whopromptly followed up in a Restricted!

It’s arguable whether Henrietta Knightqualifies as a “small yard” but, havingenjoyed great success between theflags in the 1980s, the trainer oflegendary triple Gold Cup winner BestMate returned to Point-to-Points after25 years when her Port Golan wassecond at Lockinge. She is the onlytrainer without a winner to feature inthis seasonal round-up (!) although she

did win an Ascot Hunter Chase withCalgary Bay. Other one-horse trainersalongside Fran Marriott were JoannaSmyth-Osbourne, whose “familyhorse” Fermat won two with son Edon board, and the irrepressible JennyPidgeon, who also won two withClassic Destiny.

Among the jockeys, 19-year-old JoeHill has had his best ever season, with15 winners (at the time of writing)placing him in the top ten of theNational Mens jockeys championship, although some way behind record-breaking champion Will Biddick. Joewas fortunate to have access to someof father Alan’s good horses, includingQuinz – who he rode to win atCheltenham – and Consigliere, but hemade the most of his outsideopportunities too, striking up aproductive partnership withGoodnight Vienna. However, hisfavourite horse remains Ravethebrave

on whom he won twice this year andwho provided him with his first everrides and wins in Points and HunterChases.

Joe was also crowned South MidlandsArea top male rider for the first timein a close battle with FreddieHenderson and Tom Ellis. Tom wasparticularly unlucky, holding a narrowlead in this race when he broke his legat Mollington early last month. Asusual, he achieved most of hissuccesses on Fred Hutsby’s horses butis also making the most of hisopportunities with Laura Thomas.Tom marries National LadiesChampion Gina Andrews shortly andwe wish them both the best of luck –and hope that Tom’s leg has healedenough for him to enjoy the ridingsafari they have planned for theirhoneymoon!

Freddie Henderson deserves specialmention. Not only was he just pippedat the post for the local title, he waschampion South Midlands NoviceRider and currently lies joint-second inthe National Mens Novice Riderstandings. He has achieved this successwhile studying in Newcastle during theweek – with limited opportunities toride out – and heading south to ridethe horses trained by his father Jamesmost weekends. His nine winners havebeen achieved from a relatively smallnumber of mounts and include OliverJames and the revitalised Otto TheGreat.

It was a good year for the SouthMidlands lady jockeys. Hannah Watsonis in second place in the National LadyRiders title race, although she achievedmost of her successes elsewhere andonly actually rode one winner in the

area, Ballyjames at Cocklebarrow inJanuary. Most of her successes werefor Shropshire-based Tor Collins, onthe likes of Gauvain, My Flora andMinella For Party – and she also wonon Ruddy Article, a rare runner inLadies Races for national championtrainer Jack Barber.

Katy Lyons is another rider tomention, her 13 wins so far placingher fifth in the national standings.Having guided Tempelpirate to ninewins and the leading horse title in2014, she continued her successfulassociation with Tim Underwood andhas struck up partnerships withnumerous other yards, including –most notably – that of Alan Hill, forwhom she rides Sharp Suit. It’s been a good year. Roll on the2015/2016 season!

THE RIDERS & PONIES CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS SERIESThe Riders & Ponies Championship Points Series will run throughout the season for both 138cms and 148cms riders/ponies. It has become a highly competitive affair with points being allocated to the first four past the post. The rider andowner of the pony from each height category with the most points at the end of the season will be presented with their prizesat Cheltenham Races in October. It seems the most natural venue for the event being the home of National Hunt Racing andgives the award winners a taste of what might come following their time pony racing.

THE RACETECH GRADUATE AWARDThe Rider who gains the most points throughout the season via the Champion Points Series and who plans to go on and ridein Point-to-Point Races the following year will be offered sponsorship via the Riders Sponsorship Scheme (RSS) fromRaceTech – this only applies to those riders who turn 16 during the 2015/16 Point-to-Point Season. The RSS is a sponsorship initiative created by the Point-to-Point Authority, which enables riders to source sponsorship toassist the costs associated with riding. For further information please contact: Lucy Tucker 01258 817604 / 07771 518258 / [email protected]

Who was capturing the action last weekend?

The Point-to-Point season is drawingto a close and the final Hunter Chasestook place at Stratford Racecourse lastFriday evening. Photographers NealeBlackburn and Grace Beresford werein attendance to capture the action ona night when the winning distance inthree of the five races was a head.

Garthorpe’s Meynell & SouthStaffordshire was the sole meeting totake place on Saturday and it was theever-present course photographerNico Morgan who was on hand totake all the stills.

The following day was slightly busierwith three meetings taking place.

Photographer Tim Holt and the WestCountry Videos crew were at theExmoor at Bratton Down, whereassnappers Grace Beresford, fresh froma long journey back from Stratford, and Nina Edminson, were atHexham’s Border fixture. KeithSimpson was also at the latter torecord all the events as they unfolded.
