What is GO GREEN INITIATIVE!!!???

GGI

• Global environmental education program that trains volunteers to conserve natural resources for future generations and protect human health.

• active in 50 U.S. states and 73 countries.

• founded in 2002 in Pleasanton, California by Jill Buck.

What are its objectives????

They lie in the title itself……Go….• Generate less waste

• Recycle everything that cannot be reused

• Educate the community on eco friendly options

• Evaluate the environmental impact of actions

• Nourish discussions and activities that integrate environmental education into curriculum

History :-

Jill Buck who became concerned about the amount of waste being generated and the use of unsafe pesticides around playgrounds in the school community decided to take action and hence wanted to start some new revolution.

After knowing that PBT( Persistent Bioaccumulative Toxins) are causing hazardous effect on children health realized that parents and teachers could initiate substantive changes in environment for sake of protecting children health.

She researched for an environmental education program but found that there was no such effective programs and hence started GGI on her kitchen table.

The GGI is a grass roots environmental program which unites parents , teachers and Students to create a culture of conservation among people and community.

It provides schools simple options and tools to examine everything from recycling to energy conservation.

By September 2002 ,started its first elementary school and later the GGI became its nation’s fastest growing fully comprehensive environmental action plan for schools .

It strives for protecting human health in a community by promoting environmental stewardship.

It was implemented in 50 states of U.S.A and currently over 1.5 million students&teachers registered in GGI schools

First GGI school: Walnut grove elementary

First GGI middle school: Harvest park middle

First GGI high school: Amador valley high

First city to adopt GGI: San Jose, CA

4th International Earth Summit :-• Purpose of the summit is to bring together a

diverse gathering of community stake holders from across the globe to plan about the ways to create a culture of conservation

• A special track of students is added to the summit program.

• Achievements:-

• It conserved 18,606,000 gallons of water .• It saved 44 billion BTU’s of energy.(British

Thermal Unit)

We must give our wholehearted support to such type of voluntary organisations such as Go Green India and new revolutions like Swatch Bharat to protect our environment which in turn protects ourselves and our future generations.
