In 4th grade we have worked withwater and water supplies. Whatdoes it take to have clean water, what do we do with waste water, how can it be cleaned? We bor-rowed a small ”town” made by thecompany ”Grundfoss”, where weworked (and playedJ) with water

supply, water pumps, water tower, cleansing station etc.

How much water do we all use in

our daily whereabouts and indi-rectly in what we buy, what is pro-

Our 6th grade has studied themeasures that have been taken to

make our local community a more“green” commune.

The 23 children have been dividedinto 8 groups working with differ-ent subjects:

All children wore an extra thicksweater to enable the school tolower the heating system. Soless energy, less CO2

(This to remind the anniversary ofthe Kyoto protocol)

We started our day

with gymnastics on theplayground to warm upbefore going into theclasses.

Children also got a cup of hotchocolate milk during the break.

Drink tap water and reduce litter.

By stimulating the drinking of tap water, we try to reduce the transportation of water which includes lesstrains, trucks, refrigerators … which means less CO2 in the air.

We also try to avoid litter by reducing the amount of plastic bottles and tetra bricks. Our school has the ambition to become a ‘tap water only’- area as soon as possible.

All our students receive a bottle (sponsored by the company of Tap Water) which they bring to school everyday, filled with tap water.

The first project meeting was held

in Iasi, Romania, in early November

2010. The second project meeting

took place in Greece and in Cyprus

from 19th to 26th of February

2011. Our school hosted 19 partici-

pants from five partner schools.

The hospitality program was rich

in activities inside and outside theschool. The purpose of the visit

was to present the work that has

been done in the context of the

program by the partner schools

and to get to know our country, its

history and traditions, and its peo-

ple.

On Shrove Thursday our school

welcomed the guests with a brief

ceremony which included songs,

drama, and traditional dances. Af-terwards, the guest – teachers

presented their country and their

school in the classrooms and en-

joyed playing traditional games

with us in the school yard. The

feast and dance that followed

completed a wonderful day.

Our school hosted the 2nd project

meeting from 19 to 23/2/2011.

Before the project meeting, stu-

dents of all classes looked for in-

formation about the partner coun-

tries, made posters and flags.

November: A poster was put on a

wall of the classroom pointing to

the recycling bin. All pupils throw

in it used paper.

December: The students always

remember to switch off the lights

during breaks and to water the

flowers they keep in pots in their

classroom.

January: They worked on endan-

gered species and found out infor-

mation about them. They also made

a collage with pictures and paint-

ings.

February: Saving water month –They have learned how to save wa-

ter when they wash their hands

and teeth.

that lived in it saved it

from being burnt down.

They also visited with

the 5th grade the Bo-

tanical Gardens and

the Environmental Edu-cation Centre of our

area.

The students are working on the

forest. They have read books

about the trees growing in Greek

forests and the animals that live in

them. They made paintings and

during the project meeting in our

school they acted out a play about“The emerald forest” which was in

danger and all trees and creatures

B class The 2nd class is working on the olive

tree. The olive tree is typical of

Greece and the olive oil is very nu-

tritious.

First the students walked around

the school and observed the

branches, leaves and the olive oils

of the olive trees that are growing

there. They planted an olive tree in

a big pot and that tree was later

planted by the partner teachers in

the small yard of our

school during the meeting in

Athens. The students also

drew olive trees, watched vid-

eos about the cultivation of

the tree and the production

of olive oil, read fairy tales

and poems about it and solved

crosswords, puzzles, anec-

dotes, etc. They also wrote

down old recipes and sayings.

Litter and recycling

First the students read a fairytale about making compost and

watched videos about litter and

recycling. They also read bro-

chures and newspaper articles

about recycling . They were shown

how to separate litter for recy-

cling and recycled their own litter

in the recycling bin which is just

outside our school. They solvedcrosswords and answered Right/

False questions. They made post-

ers and coasters using old, useless

magazines and leaflets.

of the air, which is due to the

ships coming into and leaving theport, as well as the noise pollution.

Finally, they discussed about the

consequences that the works that

take place on the ships cause to

the sea.

The 5th and 6th classes had two

chats with the Cypriot partner

school and one with the Belgian

school.

The students of the 6th class havecollected information from the

internet as well as newspapers and

magazines about sea pollution, dis-

cussed about it and made posters.

They visited the port of Pireas and

saw pictures of it, past & present,

observed in the microscope small

creatures that live in the Greek

seas and then walked around the

port. They calculated the pollution

They also visited with the 3rd

grade the Botanical Gardens and

the Environmental Education Cen-

tre of our area. In the first

visit they saw a lot of trees

and plants and were informed

about their cultivation.

During their visit in the Envi-

ronmental Education Centre

they watched videos about

forests and the ways to pro-

tect them and then they

walked on the mountain of Ymitos

and were informed about the

plants and trees that grow there. The students collected informa-

tion from the internet as well as

newspapers and magazines about

the various types of forests and

their flora and fauna, the dangers

we face in Greek forests, dis-cussed about them and made a

poster using various materials, pa-

per, buttons, feathers etc. During

the project meeting they danced a

dance about sea pollution.

That’s all for now. See you next issue, after our visit toThisted, Denmark, with more amazing experiences and factsto tell you all.

Salve, ragazzi!

Siamo di ritorno da una magnifica doppia visita in Grecia e Cipro. Abbiamo fatto lezione

di riciclaggio, costruendo oggetti con bottiglie di plastica usate. Abbiamo anche

chattato con una nostra classe in Italia! E poi abbiamo partecipato a cerimonie, giochi e

Our Comenius «corner» with updated information to all community

from different levels have joined us

and come up with some new ideas.

Here are some of the most interestingactivities:

- Some students attending the 6th

and 7th grades invited a uni-

versity teacher to come to

school and give a lecture on

renewable energies;

-The same students visited a wind

farm in Marão mountains;-A group of students is cleaning

the school playgrounds,

- 9th grade students invited the

Town Hall representative of

the Environment Department

to come to school, who is go-

ing to send new recycling bins

to school;

- Kindergarten and primary school

students are growing vegeta-

bles at school using natural

fertilizer made at school- All students celebrated the

World Day of the Forests

planting trees, giving out

trees and plants, offering

leaflets and book markers

- We finished and recorded our

song and made a videoclip.

- We booked and start to organizea class exchange (17 students

and 3 teachers) with the Pol-

ish school (13th -19th June).

We have tried to follow the

schedule with the planned activities

and we’ve been successful so far! Sowe did a lot of research work about

renewable energies and presented the

information to our school mates

through PowerPoint presentations; we

recorded and took pictures of some of

our daily “green tasks” such as switch-

ing off the lights, saving water while

brushing the teeth, using the bus orshare lifts (carpooling) to come to

school, recycling. In order to show all

these pictures and films we did some

PowerPoints and Movie Maker presen-

tations. We also started the diction-

ary with environmental words and we

celebrated the meteorology day (23rd

March).
