Q: What exactly is an unclaimed layaway sale? A: An unclaimed layaway is an item that a customer has put a deposit and/or made payments on. When these layaway accounts age without any activity, the customers are contacted to remind them of their account. After numerous attempts with no response these open layaway accounts become unclaimed layaways. The unpaid balance on these items become the new price and gives you the opportunity to take advantage of these sales. Q: Aren’t all jewelry stores basically the same? A: Every store is different in its own way. We strive on being honest and fair; not only to our customers, but to our employees as well. We want to keep our competitive edge, so we work with everyone and find a solution for every budget. Q: Why does having over 100 years of combined experience important to your customers? A: As consumers, when we walk into a business, we expect that our questions will be answered. When we need to be educated on a product, we will receive the knowledge necessary. Seeing familiar faces when we walk into a store also makes us feel comfortable. We are thankful to have an experienced staff to provide our customers the service they deserve. Q: What’s the best advice you can give to someone who wants to buy an extra special gift for a loved one? A: Come to Aquamarine Jewelers. Experience the quality, service, and pricing. We want to show everyone what we have to offer. We want to become your jeweler for life.

Q: What’s the leading cause of tire failure?A: Heat is the main cause of tire failure. When the tire pressure is low in the tire, it creates more heat on the casing, which in return can cause a blowout. Also, during the summer months, again, heat is the main cause of tire failure, which is why it is so vital to maintain the correct tire pressure. When the casing in the tire gets hot, the rubber gets softer, therefore creating a higher chance you may have of a blowout. It is key to check the tire pressure often.

Q: What are some of the services that are offered by Les Schwab to help prevent tire failure?A: We offer a simple routine air check. You’re more than welcome to stop in at your convenience. There’s no wait time, no appointment necessary. It usually only takes two minutes and it doesn’t cost you any quarters…it’s free!

Q: Does Les Schwab offer more than just tires?A: Yes, we also offer brake service, alignment service, shock and strut service and batteries. We also do a multitude of front end work, suspension work, lift kits, lowering kits, custom wheels, wipers and chains.

I can’t be the only one who’s sick and tired of hearing the old cliché that every brainwashed professional athlete spits out during the interview after the big game; “We won because we gave it 110%!” On top of being mathematically impossible, this overused drivel is likely not even close to being honest or accurate. When someone says “I gave 110%” don’t you wonder if their level of effort was even close to 100%?

The first time my wife Diana went into the hospital nine years ago, I transformed from being a reasonably productive member of society to a useless, pathetic and stressed out basket case. More than anything, I wanted to be there for her when she needed me most, which was immediately after her surgery. Unfortunately, I wasn’t there for anyone except my bed, the medicine cabinet and the porcelain throne in our one and only bathroom!

For those of you who have ever had a spouse in the hospital, you know how challenging and stressful this experience can be. If you share the household chores with you spouse, viola, your workload at home doubles. Your job seems to become even more demanding, especially when you’re self-employed. The bills continue to fill the mailbox daily, even when your spouse is no longer able to contribute financially. On top of all that, you’re running to the hospital for several hours every day, doing all you can to help the one you love while keeping concerned family and friends informed with up-to-the-minute progress reports.

Looking back on that experience, I know where I made my fatal flaw. I stretched myself too thin by trying to do it all. To put it in the simplest terms, I gave more than I had to give. I tried to give 110% and I failed miserably! From the time I got up until the moment my throbbing skull crash landed on my favorite pillow late at night, I was running all out. For 16 hours a day, I worked as fast as I could to keep up with the overwhelming demands. I was upbeat and chipper the first few days as I systematically checked off another box on my growing to-do list. But, as time went by, the tasks came like stormy ocean waves, each one appearing larger than the last. A few days before Diana was released, I had become more and more depleted until my immune system was completely exhausted. The final straw broke my figurative back when I learned that for a few terrifying seconds, the love of my life’s heart stopped beating during the operation. Diana had to be shocked back to

life with those electric paddles you see on T.V. From there, my stress levels soared off the charts and I caught the worst flu of my life. All my efforts of trying to emulate a superstar athlete were over. No more winners’s interviews, no more 110% speeches and no plans to go to Disneyland after the super-bowl victory.

The only bowl I saw for days after that traumatic event was the toilet bowl!

When I had to call 911 last week and have Diana rushed to the hospital that she’s still in (9 days and 21 hours, but who’s counting), I

remembered the past and chose to make a healthier choice for us both. This time, I resolved to only give

90% to the world and keep 10% for myself. So far, my strategy has worked at least 110% better (I’m kidding).

I’m not exhausted, stressed out or heaving my guts out. Best of all, I’ve been there for the woman I cherish when

she’s needed me most. With the exception of the last two nights (tonight being deadline night and it’s now 11:59 p.m.); I have kept my promise to limit my work from the

time I rise until 9p.m. Once the clock strikes 9, I call it a day, no matter how many items are left unchecked on the never

ending to-do list. After 9 pm, it’s my party and I get to do all the stupid little things that bring me peace and joy: watching my favorite T.V. shows and playing mindless video games until I’m ready to crash.

For those of you who profess to be fast learners, you may never understand the plight of a slow learner. It only took me 20 years to apply one of the most valuable lessons I learned after reading Steven Covey’s groundbreaking book “The 7 Secrets of Highly Successful People.” One of the seven secrets is the principal Covey refers to as sharpening the saw. His analogy is simple but profound. When you swing an axe against one tree after another, over time the axe becomes dull and your results will diminish, even when you’re giving 110% effort! Covey advises us to take time to relax and unwind (sharpen the blade). When you return to work, you’ll be rested, refreshed and best of all your

results will improve. Of course you don’t have to take my word for it…go ask my toilet!

With Vinnie & Pong Boonsom

Q: What’s your background in the restaurant business?A: Well, my mom (Pong) has been in the restaurant business for over 30 years and I’ve been in the restaurant business since I was probably 18 years old. I got into it straight out of high school and while I was in college. I managed a lot of different restaurants: Thai restaurants, American restaurants and Hispanic restaurants and basically that’s where my restaurant experience has come from.

Q: How long have you owned the Thai House Restaurant?A: My family and I have owned the Thai House Restaurant for three years. We purchased the restaurant in 2009 from a friend.

Q: Why did you choose to buy the Thai House Restaurant?A: Location is the key. We originally bought another restaurant in Rocklin with a few other people and unfortunately it didn’t work out. This opportunity came into our hands when a friend of ours who owned it wasn’t doing so well, so we bought it and changed the recipe to ours.

Q: How is the Thai House Restaurant doing now?A: We’re doing pretty good and we’re proud of what we’ve done for the community here. We won Best Thai Restaurant in 2009. We also won the Best Thai Restaurant on the KCRA list two of the past three years, coming in first in 2009, second in 2010 and first again in 2011.

Q: What do you attribute your success to?A: Good food and customer service. We pay attention to details and listen to what our customers needs are and provide that for them.

Q: It sounds like you’ve been very flexible by offering new dishes. Is that correct?A: Yes, besides the full menu, we offer daily specials and some of the specials are very popular.

Q: What are some of your more popular dishes? A: Our number one selling dish is the Pad Thai. This dish has prawns, chicken breast, tofu and egg, that’s stir fried in a sweet and tangy Pad Thai sauce topped with bean sprouts, chives and roasted peanuts. My number one selling special is our Eggplant Delight; a wonderful dish if you guys like eggplants. It’s a combination of prawns, ground chicken, Japanese Purple Eggplant, bell peppers, onions and stir fried in a red chili sauce that’s a medium spice. Another popular dish is our Drunken Noodles. It’s a stir fried noodle with fresh wide noodles, ground chicken, tomatoes, fresh Thai basil in a spicy chili garlic sauce, served over a bed of lettuce with some bean sprouts. It’s a very good dish if you like spicy food. We’re also known for our curry’s and our salads.

Damsel in DefenseBy Bob Cox

National statistics shows that 1 in 6 women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime and college age women are four times more likely to be assaulted. Furthermore, crime is back on the rise this year and every 35 seconds an aggravated assault occurs in the United States. What can women do to protect themselves in the event that they are assaulted by someone who is larger and stronger than they are?

While most reasonable people would agree that self-defense courses are a great option to help empower women, it may take several months or years to develop the skill sets required to adequately protect oneself. If you’re a woman who wants to feel safe and empowered today, I would encourage you to look at a brand new company that offers women affordable self-protection products. The company is called Damsel in Defense and their motto is simple: “Because you carry your knight in shining armor in your purse”.

Damsel in Defense is a company that’s committed to equipping women with the tools to not only keep women safe but to give them the confidence to know they have a way out if they ever do feel threatened. This ground floor company was started in October 2011 by Idaho residents Bethany Hughes and Mindy Lin. They felt a little unsafe when they were out with their children in public and they didn’t feel comfortable carrying a gun alongside their children, so they decided to use a variety of products that would empower them without harming other innocent people.

A client of mine named Suz-Anne Shoblom recently joined the company. I had a lot of questions about this exciting new up-and-coming business, so here’s how our conversation went…

Q: How did you get involved with Damsel in Defense?A: I found out about the company through Trish Romandia,

my mentor and friend, while I was in another direct sales company. She invited me to do an event and offered me a chance to check into this, and it didn’t take long until I was hooked!

Q: What hooked you?A: What hooked me is that I’ve been in direct sales for 7

years and I didn’t have a really strong team underneath me. I was selling a product that was consumable but at the same time a little bit out of some peoples price range. It was a little bit of a specialty product. So, what interested me about Damsel in Defense was that it is an untouched market of products that have great benefits. Even though we only will sell the products maybe once, people are going to tell their family and friends to buy products to keep their family safe and empowered as well. The ground floor opportunity is also what I was drawn to. You don’t get a chance to be number 33 in a direct sales company very often. I feel so lucky that I was offered the chance.

Q: Do you believe that Damsel in Defense helps empower women?

A: Yes, definitely! I, as a woman, never thought about carrying any self-defense product in my life. Since I started selling these products, I carry them and I’m more aware of my surroundings. I feel empowered and feel like I have a product to protect me if I ever need it. That’s what we market to our customers as well. We encourage women to take self-defense classes and the information we give them is to be prepared with your products before you leave your house or job.

Q: How do people buy your products?A: Damsel in Defense is a direct marketing company, so

we do home demonstrations and events. In order for someone to purchase the products, they need to contact one of the independent pros via email, phone or the internet.

Q: What are the in-home demonstrations like?A: They are very quick and easy. We get in, we present the

products and we give people an opportunity to try them and make a purchase. We encourage people to test them out. A lot of times with the stun guns, people are very surprised that they are so light weight and they don’t vibrate when you push the button. The key is to be comfortable with the products, so you won’t be afraid to use them if you need to.

Q: Are the products reliable and affordable?

Page 9: Go For it Magazine - September 2012

September 2012 GO FOR IT 9

A: Yes, and that’s what a lot of customers are really, really excited about! In addition to the low costs of the products, we have a safe and sassy bundle, which is not in our brochure, where you purchase one of the stun guns, excluding the “Call Me Crazy” gun which is $95, but any other stun gun, you add $10 to the price of that and you get $20 worth of products. So, it’s actually a better value and you’re getting more for your money. It’s also bundling the products that are popular together.

Q: This sounds like an amazing business opportunity. How do people join your company?

A: In order to join the business, you contact one of the local pros or anybody you want that’s already in the company. It’s $179 to join, which gets you a little over $300 in retail product, plus brochures and order forms that you’ll need to get started.

Q: How long did it take before you started making money?

A: Two weeks and I have made steady income ever since. I recruited my first pro in three days and my team now has over 130 people! The company is completely re-launching, so the commissions are going to be amazing!

Q: Are you planning to eventually run this business full-time?

A: Definitely, I have one kid that just started middle school and one that just started high school and I can see the opportunity with this company in order to make a full-time income very soon. I am happy to mentor my whole team and be there for them to also be successful. With the new compensation plan, everyone has an opportunity to succeed.

Q: I happen to know that you have a lot of great people on your team, including the Tupperware Queen, Connie Williams, who’s been featured many times in our magazine!

A: Yes, isn’t she awesome! She’s rocking her Damsel business in addition to her love for Tupperware.

Q: Connie, are you excited about joining Damsel in Defense?

A: I am. It’s been fun watching Suz-Anne grow with it. She’s very excited. Like with any direct selling product, the more excited you are, the more your customers see the excitement. She’s really taken the time to learn the stats, learn the wattage, the voltage and everything else about the products. She is what I consider a Damsel PRO. I feel good about having Suz-Anne as a mentor and friend!

Editor’s notes: For more information about Damsel in Defense, contact one of the Damsel in Defense Pro’s listed on page 9 in this edition or visit www.damselindefense.net.

There’s an exciting, invigorated move-ment along the American River (and we’re not talking about the bikers and anglers). Check out these recent developments in the local arts community:

• Rancho Cordova City Hall is host- ing GENESIS: An exhibit of fine art by Rancho Cordova artists now through Sept. 24.• The Sacramento Fine Arts Center in Carmichael recently hosted their annual open show: Magnum Opus (pictured). Many more exhibits to come!• The Northern California Arts group is planning a series of art workshops that will spotlight some of the scenic views we enjoy along the American River.

An ever-growing number of arts organizations representing the visual and performing arts are banding together to support each other and to get the word out about ALL that the American River region has to offer.

American River Renaissance

The State of the Arts in CarmichaelThe Camerata California was formed in the year 2000 to promote the performance of classical instrumental and vocal music. Camerata is comprised of professional mu-sicians united in the wish to apply their experience and vocal qualities to an activity of uncommon depth and inspiration. It is a versatile chamber chorus and is capable of carrying any repertoire with a large expressive range.

The mission of the Performing Arts Center At El Camino (ecARTS) is to build a 600-seat Performing Arts Center and art gallery on the campus of El Camino High School. The pro-posed new facility will include state of the art lighting, sound, rehearsal space and dressing

rooms. The intent of the lobby area is to be a space large enough to house ongoing art exhibits as well as receptions and small fundraising events. The performing arts center will fulfill the need for both school and community groups to publicly present visual and performing programs.

For news about these and other organizations and events, visit ArtsBlip.com. This new website’s mission is to put local arts “on the map” with informa-tion about organizations, artists and events and to spread the word!! Car Tech TalkThe Most Important Safety Precaution

Oftentimes, we’ll get a car in the shop that is in great condition that’s in need of some minor maintenance. This car looks great, washed, waxed, clean interior etc. Everything checks out on the rack and we begin performing the requested maintenance. I’m an old tire guy from way back… I wander out and inspect tires closely throughout the day. Every so often I come across a car with tire issues

that are not easily seen while on the ground. Not only do I use it as a training moment for the guys, it’s an opportunity to insure the safety of my customers and their family members.

I was taught a very long time ago that the most important safety feature of a car is the tires. Let’s face it, how good are your brakes when your tires are bald and sliding around in the rain? Your car’s stopping ability is determined by your tires, NOT your brakes. Modern brake systems are designed way beyond the needs of the car under most, if not all driving conditions. It’s why we now have ABS systems in cars; the brakes simply have too much stopping power and can lock the tires on a whim. The brakes can only apply enough force to get the tires on the edge of adhesion. Once you get beyond that, you are either sliding or the ABS system has kicked in. In both cases, you’re just a passenger and along for the ride as either physics or your ABS system is really in control.

There are key elements to tire performance and these are:

• Tread pattern • Tread depth • Air pressure

Tread pattern is what the tire actually looks like on the surface. There are grooves running this way and that. A tire should be purchased that fits your driving profile. Most California drivers can get away with just about anything but other regions require winter AND

non-winter tires. What’s important in California is wet weather traction. Channeling and siping (miniature slits) help to remove the water from between the tire’s tread blocks and the road surface.

Tread depth is important for wet weather traction since deeper grooves will remove and channel more water at a given speed. Naturally, the tire will wear throughout its life until the tread exposes the “wear bars,” which are small bumps approximately 2/32” high located randomly within the grooves of the tire. Generally speaking, when they are exposed the tire should be replaced.

Air pressure is what gives the tire strength to resist wear and determine load capacity. There is a pressure on the side of the tire. It is only there to provide maximum load capacity pressure. An average tire will handle approx 3,000lbs at max pressure. Your car probably does not exceed 3900 lbs; this is spread across 4 tires. The air pressure you should pay attention to is provided by the vehicle manufacturer. We get into trouble by NOT checking air pressure often enough. In California it is against the law to

service a car without checking air pressure. This is how important it is. Making sure that your tires are properly inflated and have

adequate tread depth is a key to driving safety. Pressure should be checked at least once a month, more often is better. Tread depth should be checked across the entire tire and at different locations around its circumference. Many cars will wear the tires on the inside which may be out of view, so check them! Drive safely, but above all, make sure your tires are in good condition. At Valley Motorwerks, we will check any brand of car’s tires for

free, it’s simply that important.Editor’s notes: Walter Ford is the owner of Valley Motorwerks.
