THE ZAGRO GROUPCurrently generating 70 percent of its turnover from export sales, Gmeinder Lokomotiven’s merge into the ZAGRO Group should help to expand the company’s presence. The Group works in the same market as Gmeinder Lokomotiven, which will enable the two separate bodies to join forces and synergies byways of sales, production and service. The ZARGO Group produces a variety of road-rail vehicles and shunting equipment, and Gmeinder Lokomotiven’s locomotives are now an extension of these, produced for the higher end of the scale. Gmeinder Lokomotiven will utilise ZARGO Group’s skills and knowledge, and the Group will develop the company’s mosbach site (currently being refurbished) into important manufacturing facilities.

Both the ZAGRO Group and Gmeinder Lokomotiven are aware that the locomotive industry is both a skilled trade and one of innovation and modernity. A number of computers, programmed by the locomotive manufacturer, are required for each product. State-of-the-art wireless data transmission and on-line monitoring are used to ensure quality, whilst almost all shunting locomotives feature radio remote control, which must be expertly programmed to accommodate the locomotives (15 metres long and 80 tonnes heavy).

RESEARCHING AND PRODUCINGAs tailor-made locomotives require an extensive amount of knowledge and planning, almost 20 percent of the company’s staff is involved in research and development. The majority of Gmeinder Lokomotiven’s locomotives are an enhancement or improvement on the last model, therefore new technologies are introduced quickly. At present, nearly all shunting locomotives are powered by a diesel engine; however, this will change in the coming years when renewable energy will replace traditional fuel. Electric drives are available, although the challenge is how to harness the energy for the locomotive, as batteries are too heavy and fuel cells and hydrogen storages are not powerful enough. Thus, although the diesel engine may not be replaced completely, it will be improved significantly thanks to efficient technology, which has been sourced through extensive research and development.

Gmeinder Lokomotiven utilises the help of its suppliers for sufficient research, development and technology, as it is a small company and is therefore unable to develop a locomotive in full depth on its own. Reliable suppliers are a must in this case, as is quality; the company aims to deliver first-class products and as a result, must receive first-class components (diesel engines, power transmissions, cooling and brake systems) from its supply network of recognised businesses, many located in Germany or Switzerland. They work together from the

early stages of every project, normally before Gmeinder Lokomotiven’s clients are offered a quote. Strong customer relationships are also imperative to the company’s success; tailor-made locomotives can only be developed through good communication. many of the company’s customers have been working with Gmeinder Lokomotiven for decades. This long-lasting trust, alongside the flexibility, organisation and skills of the company’s employees, has led to Gmeinder Lokomotiven delivering some of the best tailor-made locomotives, which would not be available from some of the larger manufacturers.

Certification is also important for Gmeinder Lokomotiven. Every railway vehicle must be certified before they can be used, in addition to the company’s staff requiring the correct documentation for quality management, according to ISO 9001, and welding (EN 15085); all welders must be able to prove their qualifications through work samples that are analysed regularly. It is as a result of all the quality and security measures that Gmeinder Lokomotiven is confident of its future success. n
