The Duramax Diesel engine is equippedwith a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)that will filter or trap particulates (solidparticles in the exhaust exhibited asblack smoke) before they can be emit-ted into the atmosphere. The DPF will
occasionally need to be cleaned ofaccumulated solids. During a cleaning, the exhaust gas temperature is warmedso that the accumulated particulate mat-ter in the DPF will be safely converted toharmless gases. This feature has beendesigned to operate automatically, withlimited driver involvement.
For effective DPF cleaning, the vehicle
will need to operate continuously forapproximately 20 minutes and at speedsgreater than 30 mph. If the vehicle isreturned to idle during the cleaningprocess, the driver may notice a slightlydifferent sound or a slightly elevatedengine idle speed. This is normal.
If the vehicle is not being operated in amanner to allow effective automatic DPFcleaning, the CLN EXH FILTER warninglamp will illuminate.
