BADGERS FACE YET ANOTHER TOP25 FOE The Badgers will take on their 4th ranked opponent of the season when they travel to Virginia for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Monday, Nov. 27. UW and UVA split a pair of Challenge games in 2012 and 2013, with each team winning on the opponent's home floor. Up next, UW opens Big Ten play at home vs. Ohio State on Dec. 2. NOTES TO KNOW ABOUT WISCONSIN TOUGHEST STRETCH: Wisconsin has played arguably the toughest schedule in the country so far. Creighton is the only other school that has faced 3 ranked teams. In taking on UVA, the Badgers will play a 4th ranked team in a span of 5 non-con games for the first time ever (more on page 3). THISCLOSE: The Badgers are 0-3 against the AP top 25, but came close to winning all 3. UW was tied or within 2 points with 2:00 remaining in all 3 games. STILL STANDING TALL: Despite a 3-3 start to the season, the Badgers are still ranked among the top teams according to Ken Pomeroy. Wisconsin is ranked No. 29 overall in the KenPom.com rat- ings, owning a top-50 offense (#46) and defense (#23). GARD IN CONTROL: Wisconsin is in good hands with 3rd-year head coach Greg Gard. With a record of 45-21 (.682), Gard owns the third-highest win percentage in school history (min. 60 games) behind Hall of Famers Bo Ryan (.737) and Walter Meanwell (.712) (more on page 9). CHALLENGE ACCEPTED: UW is 9-9 all-time in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, winning each of its last 2 Challenge games and 3 of its last 4 on the road. Among Big Ten teams, the Badgers are tied with Purdue (9) and Minnesota (9) for the most Big Ten/ACC Challenge (more on page 3). WHO'S GONE: UW graduated 5 seniors off last year's team who accumulated 4,802 career points and 350 combined starts. The Badgers bring back just 38.3% of the points scored a year ago. WHO'S BACK: UW returns just 1 starter from last season in junior Ethan Happ. Sophomore guard D'Mitrik Trice is the only other player on the roster that had started a game (2). HAPP HAVING HIS WAY: One of just two returning All-Americans in college basketball, junior Ethan Happ is off to an impressive start. He is the only major conference player averaging at least 18.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg and 3.0 apg (more on page 4). YOUTH MOVEMENT: For the first time in 20 years, UW is relying heavily on freshmen. The Badgers freshman foursome of Brad Davison, Aleem Ford, Kobe King and Nate Reuvers is accounting for a combined 21.2 ppg and 72.9 mpg (more on page 3). LAST TIME OUTWISCONSIN 71, MILWAUKEE 49Nov. 24, 2017 | Kohl Center, Madison, Wis.

Leading by 5 at the half, UW opened the second half on a 16-4 run and cruised to a 71-49 win over in-state rival Milwaukee on Friday.

The Badgers went 10-for-19 on 3FGs and owned a 19-7 edge in 2nd-chance points.

Freshman Brad Davison scored a career-high 19 points, going 5-for-6 from 3-point range.

Junior Ethan Happ finished with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Sophomore Brevin Pritzl posted 12 points and 4 rebounds while sophomore D’Mitrik Trice scored 10 points (2-2 3FGs).

SCHEDULE STRENGTHHead coach Greg Gard has said on several occasions that strength of schedule won't be an issue for this year's Badgers. Judging by the early portion of the season, he appears to be right.

In facing No. 15 Xavier, No. 22 Baylor and No. 23 UCLA, Wisconsin faced 3-straight ranked non-conference opponents for the first time in school history. Add in Virginia and the Badgers are playing 4 ranked teams in a span of 5 games, which is also a program first in the non-con.

Based on the KenPom ratings, UW's non-conference schedule includes 6 games against teams ranked in the top 60: #3 UVA, #19 Baylor, #21 Xavier, #42 UCLA, #45 Temple #52 Marquette. Only 2 of those games are at home. Add in #70 Ohio State (Dec. 2) and #35 Penn State (Dec. 4) and the Badgers will play 8 teams in the top-70 before New Years.

In total, UW's 2017-18 schedule features 10 games against teams in the AP preseason poll and another 3 vs. teams receiving votes.

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHTFor the first time in 20 years, the Badgers are relying heavily on their freshman class – a four-man group that includes Brad Davison, Aleem Ford and Kobe King and Nate Reuvers.

Against No. 23 UCLA, UW started 2 freshmen (Davison and Ford) for the first time in almost 20 years. The last time the Badgers starting lineup featured multiple freshmen was the final game of the 1997-98 season when Mike Kelley, Andy Kowske and Maurice Linton started in a 66-61 loss to Illinois.

Wisconsin's freshman foursome of Davison, Ford, King and Reuvers have combined to average exactly 21.2 ppg and 11.4 rpg.

Davison in particular is playing like a savvy veteran, increasing his scoring output in each of UW's 6 games this season from 5 to 8 to 12 to 13 to 14 to a career-high 19 against Milwaukee. On the year, Davison is 2nd on the team and 3rd among Big Ten freshmen averaging 11.8 ppg. He is also 2nd in the Big Ten averaging 2.3 steals per game. Davison leads UW and ranks 11th in the Big Ten shooting 48.3% from 3-point range, going 14-for-29. In his most recent outing vs. Milwaukee, Davison went 5-for-6 from long range. Davison is also 2nd on the Badgers in FTs and FTAs, going 15-18 (.833) at the charity stripe.

Ford was rewarded with a starting spot vs. UCLA after scoring a career-high 10 points (2-4 3FGs) vs. Baylor. He also tallied career highs with 7 rebounds and 5 assists vs. Milwaukee.

King is averaging 5.0 ppg, including a career-high 9 points (3-4 FGs) vs. UCLA.

After contemplating redshirting for the first 5 games, Reuvers made his debut vs. Milwaukee, posting 6 rebounds and 2 assists.

HAPP MAKING HISTORYLast season, junior Ethan Happ established himself as one of the best players in college basketball. This season, he's looking like one of the best players of the last 20 years.

Happ is the only major conference player averaging at least 18.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg and 3.0 apg. In fact, over the last 20 years (since 1997-98) only 5 players in college basketball have averaged those marks: Wake Forest's Tim Duncan (1997), Ohio State's Evan Turner (2010), Pitt's Ricardo Greer (2010), LSU's Ben Simmons (2016) and Purdue's Caleb Swanigan (2017). In all, 4 of those 5 earned consensus All-American status that season.

Happ leads the Badgers in points (18.2), rebounds (9.3), assists (3.7) and blocks (1.0). He is second in steals (1.3). Happ is the only player in the Big Ten leading his team in points, rebounds and assists.

Last season, Happ was the only player in the NCAA to average at least 13.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.5 spg and 1.0 bpg. In fact, Happ was the first major conference player in over 20 years to reach those marks for an entire season. Vermont's Marqus Blakely (2009 & 10) is the only other D-I player to hit those marks since at least 1996-97.

Happ was the nation's only player to lead his team in points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals during conference play.

With 1,060 points, Happ ranks 41st on Wis-consin's all- me scoring list. He is also ed with Frank Kaminsky for 13th on the school's career rebounding chart with 666. He is one of just 6 players in school history to amass 1,000 points, 650 rebounds and 150 assists.

With 3 double-doubles already this season, Happ is now ed for 7th in Wisconsin history with 23 career double-doubles.

HAPP HYPETHE GAME'S BEST ALL-AROUND PLAYER

“Happ was so good a season ago that he entered Big Ten player of the year conversations even though Purdue’s Caleb Swanigan was destroying every-thing that stood in his path on a nightly basis. He was the Adam Banks to Bronson Koenig and Nigel Hayes’s Charlie Conway. With Koenig and Hayes gone now, though, Happ gets to become Adam Banks and Charlie Conway."

ALL-TIME VS. VIRGINIA With the all-time series deadlocked at 2-2, UW and Virginia will meet for a rubber match on Monday. The two teams split a pair Big Ten/ACC Challenge contests in 2012 and 2013 with each winning on the opposing court. In 2012, the Cavaliers won 60-54 in Madison and the Badgers pulled out a 48-38 win at UVA in 2013.

In the most recent meeting, Josh Gasser was the only player from either team to score in double figures, leading UW with 11 points. Frank Kaminsky posted 9 points and 12 rebounds. UW limited UVA to just 38 points and 23.4% shooting. The 38 points were the fewest allowed by the Badgers in a road game since a 44-34 win over Washington Univ. (St. Louis) in 1957. At the time, the Cavaliers’ 38 points were their fewest during the Tony Bennett era and second fewest in the shot clock era (since 1986).

The Badgers held the Cavaliers without field goal for stretches of 8:43 and 9:03 in the second half. In fact, UVA had just 3 total field goals in the second half. Virginia also went scoreless for a period of 6:50 spanning the two halves.

Prior to the home-and-home series in 2012 and 2013, the last time Wisconsin and UVA met (1998), Dick Bennett, Tony Bennett’s father, was

the head coach at UW. The Badgers claimed a 66-56 win at the 1998 Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska.

UW head coach Greg Gard and UVA head coach Tony Bennett served together for 2 seasons (2002 and 2003) as assistant coaches at Wisconsin. The Badgers won back-to-back Big Ten championships with Gard and Bennett on the staff.

Dick Bennett was the head coach at UW for five-plus seasons from 1996 to 2000, while Tony served as an assistant coach on the Badgers’ staff for three seasons (2001-03).

Wisconsin heads into the 2017-18 season needing to replace 4 starters off of last year’s Sweet 16 qualifier. UW returns third-team AP All-American Ethan Happ, who was the nation’s only player to lead his team in points (14.6), rebounds (8.6), assists (3.0), blocks (1.6) and steals (2.3) during conference play last season.

The Badgers will surround Happ with a host of young talent, including sophomore point guard D’Mitrik Trice and junior forward Khalil Iverson among others. Trice averaged 18.3 minutes and 5.6 points per game as a freshman, shooting a team-high 41.8% from 3-point range. Iverson averaged 15.3 points per game off the bench a year ago, shooting over 50% from the field. UW’s rotation should also feature returning juniors Alex Illikainen, Charles Thomas, IV and Andy Van Vliet, as well as sophomore Brevin Pritzl.

Wisconsin welcomes 4 scholarship freshmen to the roster in 2017-18: guard Brad Davison, forward Aleem Ford (redshirted in 2016-17), guard Kobe King and forward Nate Reuvers.

BADGERMBB NOTES GAME 7: VS. VIRGINIA

HEAD COACH GREG GARDA coaching veteran of more than 20 years, Greg

Gard has expertly made the jump from assistant coach to head coach at Wisconsin. A er assuming the head coaching reins on Dec. 15, 2015, Gard will begin his third season as the head coach of the Badgers in 2017-18 on the heels of leading the team to the Sweet 16 in each of his fi rst two seasons at the helm.

A er ini ally taking over on an interim basis, Gard was offi cially named head coach of the Badgers on March 7, 2016. In two seasons, he has piloted the Badgers to a record of 42-18 (.700), owning the second-best 60-game start in program history.

In his fi rst two seasons with the head coaching tle, Gard has maintained a level of success that

has become synonymous with Wisconsin Basket-ball. In his inaugural season as head coach, Gard led the Badgers to the 2016 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, becoming just the second-ever fi rst-year coach to win the Jim Phelan Na onal Coach of the Year award. He followed that up by leading UW to the fi h-highest single-season win total in school history (27-10) and making a second-consecu ve visit to the Sweet 16.

Gard is just the third coach in the last 20 years to pilot his team to the Sweet 16 in each of his fi rst two seasons, joining UCLA's Steve Lavin (1996-97) and Gonzaga's Mark Few (2000-01).

The transi on to Gard’s leadership began with a 1-4 start to the Big Ten Conference, but Wiscon-sin proceeded on a run that saw it win 11 of its fi nal 13 regular-season games.

A 77-76 victory over fourth-ranked Michigan State was the beginning of a seven-game win streak that also featured a win over No. 19 Indiana and an impressive road triumph at No. 2 Maryland. The Badgers later added another road win over No. 8 Iowa on Feb. 24.

UW fi nished the regular season in a e for third place in the Big Ten standings — extending its streak of top-four fi nishes to a league-record 16th-consecu ve season — with a 12-6 confer-ence record. Gard led the Badgers to the most Big Ten wins by a fi rst-year coach since 2004 (Bruce Weber, Illinois).

Gard’s Badgers would follow that up with another 12-6 conference campaign in 2017, fi nishing second in both the regular season and the Big Ten tournament. Wisconsin would cap off its 27-win season with a signature win in the NCAA tournament, knocking off the na on’s No. 1 team Villanova, 65-62, to advance to the Sweet 16.

In 16 total seasons on the Badgers’ bench, Gard has never seen the Badgers fi nish lower than fourth in the Big Ten standings, amassing a com-bined mark of 196-80 (.710) in league play.

During his tenure as head coach, Gard has helped a pair of players reach fi rst-team All-Big Ten status: Nigel Hayes earned the nod in 2016 and

third-team All-American Ethan Happ received the dis nc on in 2017.

Long considered one of the top assistant coaches in the game, Gard served as an assistant at Wisconsin for 14-plus seasons, including the fi nal seven as the associate head coach. During that me, Gard served as the Badgers' recrui ng coordinator in ad-di on to on-fl oor coaching du es, op-ponent scou ng and game prepara on, and the construc ng of future game schedules. He was also the director of the Badger Boys Basketball Summer Camps.

Gard has been on the bench for each of the top 12 winningest seasons at Wisconsin. He has helped pilot the Badgers to four Big Ten regular season tles and three Big Ten tournament

championships, most recently winning both crowns in 2015. UW has made the NCAA tournament in each of Gard's fi rst 14 seasons, advancing to seven Sweet 16s, three Elite Eights and two Final Fours.

During Gard’s fi rst two seasons as head coach, Wisconsin has placed 11 players on the Academic All-Big Ten list. Over his 16 years in Madison, UW has boasted a total of 59 Academic All-Big Ten honors, trailing only Purdue and Northwestern over that span.

Prior to coming to Wisconsin in 2001, Gard spent the previous two seasons as Ryan’s assistant at UW-Milwaukee. He also served as an as-sistant coach to Ryan at UW-Pla eville from 1993-99. During Gard's years on the Pioneer staff , UW-Pla eville compiled a 161-13 (.925) record and won three NCAA Division III tles, fi ve straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athle c Confer-ence (WIAC) championships and appeared in six consecu ve NCAA tournaments.

Prior to joining Ryan's staff in Pla eville, Gard spent three seasons at Southwestern High School

and one at Pla eville High School, where he served in junior high and assistant varsity coaching capaci es.

In 2016, Gard and his wife, Michelle, partnered with the University of the Wisconsin and Wiscon-sin Founda on and Alumni Associa on, to launch Garding Against Cancer. This fundraising ini a ve raises funds and awareness for cancer research and care within the state of Wisconsin. In its inaugural fundraising event, GAC raised more than $1 million dollars in the fi ght against cancer.

Gard is a 1995 graduate of UW-Pla eville with a degree in physical and health educa on. He received a master's degree in counselor educa on from Pla eville in 2007. Gard and his wife, Mi-chelle, have two daughters, Mackenzie and Peyton, and a son, Isaac.
