What it is...

GL&V/Dorr-Oliver’s CableTorq thickeners and clarifiers have streamlined rake arms, pulled bycables, connected to a torque (or drive) arm thattravels above the sludge. The rake arms areattached to a special hinge. The arms thus areable to rise automatically when heavy sludge concentrations occur. But because of theunique hinge, the arms continue to operate intwo planes keeping the rake blades in perfectposition for most efficient raking and solidsremoval.

R e s u l tThe CableTorq machine automatically rides outhigh torque loads and keeps on raking – whereconventional thickeners might be forced to shut down or risk damage to the machine.

H ow it wo rk s . . .The Rake that Avoids Trouble Au to m a t i c a l l y

The CableTorq thickener does everything athickener did before, but it literally rises above alot of the old problems automatically. The dual-axis hinge on the rake arm – the heart ofCableTorq machine operation – allows the rakearm to move with a “universal-joint” actionwhenever an overload is encountered. The rakeblades ride up and back in a motion whichkeeps them parallel with their original rakingposition at any lift angle. This maintains them attheir most efficient raking capacity at all times. This unique benefit can only be achieved by useof an arm hinged with two pins, one in ahorizontal axis and one in a vertical axis.

Only the rake blades themselves and the streamlined arm they are mounted on are downin the dense sludge. This cuts resistance to a minimum and makes for a most efficientoperation. The CableTorq thickener pulls insteadof pushes. Power is supplied through cablesthat pull the rake arm like a water skier insteadof pushing it like a snowplow. The torque armthat tows the rake is high in the liquor, not deepin the dense sludge. That means easier, moreeconomical operation and lower torque andpower requirements. In some installations, the torque arm is actually clear of the liquidsurface. And because the rake arm itself istowed by the cable harness, it is free to ride upover obstructions instead of digging into themuntil overload causes a shutdown andpossible damage.

R e s u l tCableTorq thickeners significantly reduce twomajor thickening problems: downtime and maintenance costs.

Type A ClarifierAvailable in tank diameters from40 to 100 ft. with bridgesupported drivehead. Equippedwith a skimmer and scumtrough. Feed is overhead to adeep feedwell. This unit isdesigned for waste treatment forpulp and paper mills, chemicaland food plants and other wastematerials.

Type AThickenerAvailable in diameters from 40 to100 ft.– has an overhead feed.Torque arms are of single pipeconstruction. Rake blades aredesigned to provide doublesweep operation forcontinuously handling heavysludge loadings. The driveheadand raking mechanism aresupported by a wall to wallbridge across the diameter ofthe basin. The unit is ideal forthickening industrial wastes, oreconcentrates and tailings, fluedust, fly ash and utility stack gasscrubbings.

Type S ClarifierAvailable in diameters from 40 to270 ft. The unique feature of thisdesign is that the torque-arm isabove the feedwell and thereforecompletely above solution level,a particular advantage when tankcontents are corrosive.Maintenance is simplified andcost is greatly reduced inapplications calling for corrosionresistance of wetted parts. Theinfluent is siphon-fed up throughthe center support column. Atthe top, it emerges peripherallythrough diffuser ports and isdeflected downward by therotating feedwell. Applicationsinclude pulp and paper, chemicaland other waste treatmentsystems.

Type S ThickenerAvailable in diameters from 75ft. to 270 ft. Drivehead issupported on a center pier. Twos tub arms in addition to thetwo rake arms provide ex t r araking capacity at the ta n kd i s charge trench, the areawhere raking capacity is mostcritical. Feed is via a radiallaunder extending to the centerfe e d well. Type S CableTo r qt h i ckeners are now in use oncopper concentrates, middlings, alumina red mud, gold and diamond cya n i d eslimes, and in various ta i l i n g so p e r a t i o n s

• Requires lower torque capacitybecause of reduced drag.

• Automatically protects against overload due to lifting action.

• Blades maintain efficient raking angle even when the rake arms are in a lifted position.

• Keeps scraper blades in position in discharge cone or trench when arms are lifted.

• As rakes clear overload, raking arms return smoothly to original position. NO shuddering!

• Minimizes island formation because of the smooth pipe design of the rakearms.

• Allows temporary surges or shockloads in solids handling capacity.

Severe scaling characterizes these operations. The CableTorq’sstreamlined rake arm design minimizes scale formation as well as reduces torque requirements.

• Torque arms are out of the heavymud zone and in some installations actually clear the liquid level, minimizing the torque load.

• Pipe design of rake arm minimizes scale formation and reduces dead load on center mechanism.

• Each arm lifts independently for efficient continuous sludge discharge.

• Pulp & Paper Waste

The CableTorq rake arms present minimum drag when rotating through settled fiber.

• FDG Sludges• BOF Dust and Fly Ash• Sand Slimes• Gold – Cyanide Slimes• Mineral Concentrates• Mineral Tailings• Cement

These solids can thicken rapidly. TheCableTorq rake arms react to relieve theoverload by changing rake slope. Conescrapers and blades stay in position. Each arm lifts independently, allowingthe clearance of local obstructions. Thisminimizes unbalanced loads. The resultis consistently high underflow densitywithout expensive mechanical liftingdevices.
