Glorifying God by … Reaching, Building, Serving December 2017/January 2018 From Randy... Ever wonder what it is like at the beach during Christmas?... this year we will be combining our children, youth and adult choirs to present Jingle Bell Beach for our Christmas musical. This year our musical will be early: December 2 (4 pm) and December 3 (10:45 am). Sunday School teachers and classes please note that Sunday School will dismiss at 10:30 that Sunday. Both performances will be in the Family Life Center. Want to join the Choir?...the Christmas Carol Choir that is. Our caroling is a favorite because everyone can be a part. Like last year, we will travel as one group to the homes of those who are not able to attend church, then return for a time of food prepared by Wendy Moore. Caroling will be on Wednesday, December 20. We will depart from church at 5:30 pm and return to the church around 7:15 pm for supper. “Are we having 2 services on Christmas Eve?”…The answer is “Yes”. We will have our regular schedule on Sunday morning with Sunday School and Worship. Sunday morning worship will be an opportunity for our children to act out the Christmas story as our congregation sings songs that depict the birth of Christ. The evening of Christmas Eve at 5:30 pm will be a time of singing and a brief message. As part of the service we will have both the Manger and the Cross which represent the gift God gave us; the gift of salvation. As is our tradition, our Christmas Eve service will conclude with a candle lit “Silent Night”. We will start off the year of 2018 with Communion on Sunday, January 7…Let us aim together to be faithful in our Reaching, Building, Serving. I’ll be waiting on the far side banks of Jordan by Cindy Miller

T his is not the story we planned for in

this issue of “In the Spotlight.” We expected to write about Gloria and Ray Tubbs, Sr., cel-ebrating their 60th anni-versary. The celebration was to have taken place October 28; the RSVPs were received; and eve-rything was coming to-gether. But in a blink of an eye, everything changed. Ray passed away 5 days before the Saturday celebration and 9 days before the actual anniversary, November 1. Now, we celebrate an ex-traordinary man and a life well lived.

We heard many stories about Ray at the funeral ser-vice from past and present pastors and his pastor son, Ray, Jr., how loving Ray was as a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a good friend to many. Ray’s health issues over the past few years never kept him down. He’d be in the hospital one day and at church the fol-lowing Sunday. This time was different and reflected in the poem on the back of the funeral program: “All the pain and grief is over; every restless tossing passed; I am now at peace forever, safely home in heaven at last.”

Many words of respect were spoken at his service—how Ray loved Gloria unselfishly, how their love bonded them together, and how their love empowered them for 60 years—every day loving each other more and more. Old friend, Rev. Bobby Greene, likened Ray’s departure to what President Ronald Reagan said about the people who died on the Space Shuttle Chal-lenger: “We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye and slipped the surly bonds of earth to touch the face of God.”

Rev. Willard Bowen, who had baptized Ray and Gloria, said “Ray committed his life to Jesus and was never a mere spectator in church. He served the Lord

as deacon, operated the sound system, and served where needed. Now he can rest from his labors, and his good works will follow him into Heaven; howev-er, Ray’s influence lives on in the lives he left behind. That influence doesn’t die or cease because he has gone to be with God.”

Ray, Jr., introduced his dad to us, giving us the bio of his dad’s life. He characterized his dad as “quiet and reserved, unlike Mom who is an extrovert; but he spoke his mind to us. What he taught us, his children and grandchildren, is immeasurable.”

Butch Maples and Barbara Perry sang “Far Side Banks of Jordan,” as requested by Gloria. An image of Ray, when it’s time, running through the shallow waters of the Jordan, reaching for Gloria’s hand, comes to mind:

And my one regret is leavin’ you behind But if it proves to be His will that I am first to go And somehow I've a feelin’ it will be When it comes your time to travel likewise, don't feel lost For I will be the first one that you'll see And I'll be waiting on the far side banks of Jordan I'll be sitting drawing pictures in the sand And when I see you coming, I will rise up with a shout And come running through the shallow waters, reaching for your hand.

We can never again attend a Memorial Day service or a Veterans event without remem-bering Ray and the dignity he brought to the service. He proudly wore his Air Force uni-form and saluted the American flag with honor and pride. His flag-draped coffin with the stars placed over his heart signified his love for his county. He was an American Airman, guardian of freedom and justice. He was his nation’s sword and shield, its sentry and avenger, and was prepared to defend his country with his life. He now rests at Quantico National Cemetery alongside his fellow airmen and others who nobly served. He an-swered his nation’s call and can now stand at ease. Thank you, Airman First Class Ray Leslie Tubbs, Jr., USAF, for serving God and our country with honor and loyalty.

Music News By Barbara Perry

Hello everyone! I hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful! We are getting ready for our youth/children/adult musical, Jingle Bell Beach. It will be a great and festive kickoff to our Christmas season, where we have lots of wonderful music planned. I hope to see you all there!

We are also excited to have a new accompanist, Jacob Ramirez, join our team. He will start in the regular position the second week of December. Be sure to stop by and introduce yourself to him.

In January we start new music so come and join us anytime!!

Children’s Ministry By Rebecca Goff

Christmas is a wonderful time of year in our church. Please take time to enjoy the special events Shiloh offers. We are especially looking forward to the children and youth in the musical Jingle Bell Beach.

Operation Christmas Child shoebox update - we set a church goal to collect 120 shoeboxes and through your donations we have collected 113! We received many donations of items to go in the boxes and money to cover the shipping of the shoeboxes from the distribution center. Thank you for support-ing this ministry so the children receiving these boxes can hear of the love of Jesus!

With the new year possibilities are endless for the direction the children’s department can go. I am ex-cited to see what God has in store for the children here at Shiloh. Keep a close watch in the bulletins and the newsletters for some new and exciting things that will happen this year. God is good all the time and all the time God is good. May you have a blessed Christmas and New Year!

Christmas Craft Fair – December 2018

NEXT December, we plan to participate in a craft fair to raise money for The Haven in Warsaw. The goal for 2018 is to make enough items to sponsor a table at the The Haven’s annual Christmas Craft Fair in December 2018. Watch the bulletin for crafting dates at the church. There are also kits available if

Annual Cookie Exchange

Our annual cookie exchange will be at

Sharon Band’s home on Saturday, December 9th, 2—4 pm. Bring some of your favorite cookies to box up for

our shut-ins, as well as share with one another. Homemade or store-bought

cookies are fine. And, if you’d like, bring a white

elephant gift for the gift exchange. This is always a fun afternoon and you won’t want to miss it!

Blankets for the Homeless

During our GALS meeting on January 13th ( 9:30

am in the Family Life Center), we will make fleece blankets for the homeless in Fredericksburg. This is

our 4th year making blankets. Please drop off fleece donations at the mis-

sions table and plan to join us at our meeting to help make blankets. No ex-perience required. Just a pair of scis-

sors and the ability to tie a knot!

Women’s Bible Study

BREATHE by Priscilla Shirer

One of the greatest challenges among women in our culture is taking time to cease from all the activities and just breathe. We are in bondage to busy-ness. We constantly strive to com-plete the limitless to-do lists that hinder us from experiencing all that God has for us. By neglecting time for tranquility, serenity, and repose, we limit our Christlikeness and miss

out on some of God's greatest gifts. In the Old Testament, Sabbath was given to the Israelites as a gift, and it is still a gift to us today. If you are weary, worn out, and exhausted, then the con-cept of Sabbath will change your life.

This 5 week study will begin on Sunday, Janu-

Missions By Brenda Hastings

This year, Southern Baptists will set aside December 3—10 as a week of prayer for Internation-al Missions and for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offer-ing. The Lottie Moon Christmas Offering was estab-lished in 1888, to empower the international missions efforts for Southern Baptists. Shiloh will be collect-ing for the Lottie Moon Offering during the month of December. 100% of gifts to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering fund International Mission Board missionaries who are making disciples and multiply-ing churches among unreached people and places. In the last year reported (2015):

1.9 MILLION heard the gospel

175,290 new believers

15,058 trained pastors

6,138 new churches

Please join us in praying for International Mis-sions and giving to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offer-ing.

Youth Group By Cathy Lyon & Stephen Hagewood

The youth have truly put their hearts and ener-gies into "Jingle Bell Beach" and we are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and teamwork!

We will not be meeting on Sunday evenings in December as we prepare for our band, puppet, and drama ministries to resume on January 7th. Our complete schedule for Sunday night ministries will be emailed to youth parents.

Our final Wednesday youth meeting will be held on December 13th with a Christmas party during our regular meeting time. We will have desserts, hot cocoa, games, and a gift exchange. Please bring a (clean) gag gift under $5. Be sure to join us for Christmas Caroling on Wednesday, December 20 @ 5:30 pm.

In January, Wednesday Bible study will resume on January 3rd. For the first 6 weeks, we will again have studies for our high schoolers and middle schoolers.

Sunday School By Gail Davis

Merry Christmas!! And since this newsletter is for two months…Happy New Year. Its December 2017 already; are we flying down the highway of life at a rapid pace or what? I was talking with a visitor re-cently about finding the various churches in the area. As I mentioned I’d need a GPS (Global Positioning System) to find some of the churches not on our main roads, our Gideon speaker that day mentioned that the GPS is God’s tool for finding our destination.

That made me really think about the correlation between the GPS in your car and the God’s GPS for life? I don’t know about you, but I’m not sure I would have gotten this far without either! The steps, though few, can literally save your life and get you to the right destination.

Step one is to plug your GPS into the power! Step two, set your destination. Step three, now put your car in gear and point your

car forward. After that, other than you steering by the verbal

directions and braking when warned, the GPS gets you where you are going. The GPS gives you direction to turn onto the right streets, the shortest, safest way. As you begin to move forward, the GPS keeps you point-ed in the right direction. The route we need to follow is clearly mapped out on the GPS.

You pick up speed….you feel safe and confident as you drive.

Oops! If you should veer to the right, you are warned of the danger of the ditch; if you veer to the left, you are warned to stay in your lane; there’s danger coming at you.

Whoa! You’re getting too close to the car ahead….warning, warning! Stay back, there’s danger.

Beep beep; its safe to move ahead; beep beep, speed zone, slow down.

Finally, you have reached your desired destination safely. Phew! Made it, but just barely!

Life can really be like that too; each of us headed for that chosen destination.

And to get there, you have to plug into life’s most important GPS---God’s Plan of Salvation. I love it!

So how are you going to get to that desired destina-tion? Here again are those steps:

Step one: plug into the source of power – God’s Grace.

If you heard Pastor Randy’s sermon on November 12, you know that God’s grace is free; all you have to do to get it is Believe in Jesus’ holy birth which we are now celebrating; and in His death/resurrection and his forgiveness of our sins which gives us the right to plug into God’s power and to set our course on the salvation highway.

Offering Envelopes

Step two: set your destination. Where are you going….heaven --okay, how about

type in “Holy City”. Revelation 21:2, “I saw the Ho-ly City, the new Jerusalem.” God has revealed the name of our destination, our home with Him.

Step three: Put yourself in gear and get going. After that, steering by His direction and braking

when you’ve not followed those directions, will keep you on the right paths, the shortest, safest way. As you begin to move forward, the GPS keeps you point-ed in the right direction. The road to our destination is clearly mapped out in God’s Holy word, our Bible.

As you use the inspiration of His words, you can feel safe and confident as you venture on life’s high-way. His word tells you when you are headed for the ditch…that gully where the muddy water flows and evil lurks. Maybe you are inching toward the other lane, the one where you are going to come face to face with that vehicle of destruction…driven by Satan him-self or one of his minions. He likes to play “chicken” to see if you’ve got the nerve to challenge him. How about those warnings about running up on the dangers of the world…God’s word can put us back on the safe path and show us how to keep our distance from the sin and hate of this world. So as we are driving with ever increasing speed to the destination we’ve chosen, we can know that it’s beep beep, safe to move ahead; and beep beep…time to slow down for study and fel-lowship. And when we are finally at our destination, it’s not “Phew” I made it, but “Hallelujah,” I’m home.

So where am I going with this analogy? I’m invit-ing you to use your auto’s GPS to find a church home where you can study the map to heaven with like-minded folks. Learn how God has already set His Plan of Salvation in your heart so you can safely find your way to your heavenly destination.

This year Awana’s Christmas store will be on Sunday, December 10. We are in need of new or gently used items that our clubbers can pur-chase with their Awana bucks and give to their family & friends. There is a collection bin by the main en-trance in the Family Life Center.
