Dear Friends,

We are pleased to announce that this past year was a highly successful time for our chapter in which we discovered a deep value for partnership, a successful pathway for fundraising, and a perpetual devotion to the community for global health. In the past few years, we have been working on a firm foundation with our partner organization, creating a tight-knit and supportive community, and garnering awareness of global health issues on our campus. This year, we persevered toward success, through building the Individual Giving foundation we laid last year and being creative in our campaigns, which led to remarkable outcomes!

We have continued to learn about how wonderful of an organization our partner, HDI, is. It is an organization built on hard work and dedication to the value of human life. We love how HDI has a multi-faceted approach including advocacy, education and comprehensive programs. By working with them, our entire GlobeMed team has learned a great deal of what true partnership means. Together, HDI and GlobeMed have the power to change health outcomes in Rwanda; join us in making change!

Message from the Co-Presidents

Since our founding in September 2010, our

chapter has grown from 5 members to 18

dedicated members.

GlobeMed at Lawrence was founded in 2010 and persevered over a small and busy campus environment to develop a strong base of passionate members. We began with a partnership in Ecuador, but after a re-partnering in 2011, we have been steadily improving upon a relationship with Health Development Initiative in Rwanda. This partnership has been so influential in the lives of its members that two alumni have moved to Rwanda to continue in their love of HDI. We raise more and more funds every year because of the value that community members see in supporting HDI’s mission.

About Us GlobeMed at Lawrence

Kigali, Rwanda Population: 1,132,686 Now twenty years post-genocide, Rwanda is on the mend and seeking to greatly improve its access to healthcare. Health disparities still exists and work such as improving access without discrimination and training healthcare professionals needs to be done.

Our Partnership Health Development Initiative - Rwanda

Founded in 2011 Health Development Initiative-Rwanda (HDI) was founded in 2005 and born of a common passion to improve healthcare of all Rwandans, particularly marginalized populations whose needs remain under-served. The organization began with the aim of empowering individuals and communities with knowledge and skills in public health. Through education and improved healthcare capacity at different levels, HDI seeks to bridge the gaps in healthcare in Rwanda.

KEY FACT: 2.9% of adults between the

ages of 15 and 49 are infected with HIV as of

2012.

In 2013-2014, GlobeMed at Lawrence was committed to supporting HDI’s flagship sexual health program, the SHARE project. Using our funds and intern support, HDI is growing its SHARE project through Peer Education programs and expansion into more schools.

Our Project GlobeMed at Lawrence aims to raise $20,000 to fund the implementation of the SHARE program, which educates secondary school students about sexual

health and HIV/AIDS prevention in Kigali, Rwanda.

BY THE NUMBERS:

become educated and be able to teach how to prevent HIV.

education (SHARE) program in Kigali,

Rwanda.

Campaigns

Radio for Rwanda May 25, 2014

Our university radio station, WLFM, held a 12-hour radio marathon to raise money for HDI. A number of Lawrence students performed on air, playing instruments, rapping, and even performing some comedy acts. Statements about GlobeMed and information about how to donate were peppered into the program.

Color Races May 4, 2014

This was in collaboration with an existing campus tradition, Ormsby Zoo Days, where different groups on campus have booths with crafts and/or activities for students. At our booth, we sold t-shirts made by our members along with entry into a set of short team races. Paint power was thrown at the racers for added fun!

Within our chapter, one aspect of community building consisted of dinners together during the week. Sometimes we would rent out a viewing room and watch TED talks for discussion. One of the highlights this year was a trip to Bjorklunden, the Lawrence group retreat campus in beautiful Door County. We were able to bond that weekend and build a community that could more strongly meet our goals.

Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and

camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and

surrounding communities.

globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical

thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.

This year we came to many realizations about why health should be considered a human right and how this ideology plays out in the real world. We examined how different types of populations differ in their access to resources. Some examples were the poor as opposed to the rich, and the rural as opposed to the urban. We learned that there are numerous factors affecting one’s access to healthcare that are beyond one’s control. Yet, one’s health is needed to perform everyday activities. This is part of the reason that health is a human right and needs to be defended as one.

Global Health Week September 16th-21st

This was basically a week of bringing awareness to global health concerns. We placed many red flags in a visible place on campus to represent those who die from AIDS in Rwanda and posters with the statistics. We also had a cook-out where GlobeMed members talked about their concerns. We ended the week with a GlobeMed information session.

Global Health Banquet April 27th

We had approximately 30 guests attend this banquet, including professors, and community members. We aimed to educate our campus and community as to what we and HDI are all about. The evening consisted of presentations by us and our visiting chapter contact. We finished off the afternoon with a performance by The Ben, a famous Rwandan pop star.

We chose this broad and simple question because it forces people to look at some of their most fundamental beliefs not just about health, but life as a whole. We hoped it would provide answers that might help refocus every aspect of our groups operations.

The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and

workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts.

“GlobeMed Summit really emphasized the idea of network for me. As an individual, it is easy to feel lost in a movement, especially one as big as global health. Meeting other students, however, not only gave me a great sense of empowerment, but also motivation and security. Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and

ensure long-term stability of their partnership.

This year’s GROW interns have been focusing on improving the tools available to the SHARE program and helping out with other tasks of HDI. In addition to this work, they are looking into additional programs HDI has that can use GlobeMed and Lawrence’s help.

Dear Friends,

We are currently excited for our current GROW team to build upon the relationships that we have formed these past three years. During their internship, they are looking into new programs on which we can work with HDI, since the SHARE program is eligible for some other funding sources.

Next year we have some big goals for recruiting a much bigger chapter! We love the dedication our members have been showing thus far, so now we want to expand our campus influence. Another goal for the year will be holding an awareness event similar to the one we had in May, but with an audience more composed of community members and potential big donors. These connections with others who are passionate about health and human rights will be critical for our continued ability to support HDI!

As always, throughout the year we hope to plan fun and educational events for our campus and community to get involved in so that more people can be involved in the pursuit of global health equity. We will continue to fundraise through Razoo and Global Giving, or checks made out to Lawrence University with our name in the memo.
