Mikako Mihashi was born in 1965 near Sapporo city in Hokkaido, the north island of Japan. In her teens she became active in the music sub-culture of Sapporo and participated as a support vocalist in the group P-Model. She moved to Tokyo in her early twenties and published her first album Grace in 1990. Following this, she was a member of Sakata Akira's group Otemoto, and moved on to perform with the Haniwa All-Stars, under the leadership of the famous japanese percussionist, Kiyohiko Semba. A more recent project is the duo Ringam, with Japanese traditional Koto player Michiyo Yagi. Mikako has also composed and perfomed music for numerous Japanese TV commercials.

Angélique Kidjo is not only one of the best, most electrifying performers in the pop world today, but she's also one of its most creative thinkers, an artist whose mission has been to explore the relationships of diverse musical cultures. She was born in Kidjo's home village of Ouidah. "I grew up surrounded by Beninese kids and Brazilian Portuguese kids," she explains. Kidjo's genealogy includes Portuguese and English ancestry, making her a true world citizen. "I grew up listening to the traditional music that the descendants of Bahia play in Benin. It's called bouniyan and its rhythm is very close to samba. In fact, when I arrived in France in 1983, I heard music by Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, and I said, ‘hey, this is my music, it comes from where I come from.
