About the Human Genome Project

What is the Human Genome Project? Begun formally in 1990, the U.S.Human Genome Project is a 13-year effort coordinated by the U.S.

Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health. The projectoriginally was planned to last 15 years, but rapid technological advanceshave accelerated the expected completion date to 2003. Project goals are toidentify all the approximately 1,000,000 genes in human DNA,determine the sequences of the 3 billion chemical bases that make uphuman, DNA, store the information in databases, develop faster,more efficient sequencing technologies, develop tools for dataanalysis, and address the ethical, legal and social issues (ELSI) thatmay arise from the project.

To help achieve these goals, researchers also are studying the geneticmakeup of several nonhuman organisms. These include the common

human gut bacterium Escherichia coli, the fruit fly, and the laboratorymouse. A unique aspect of the U.S. Human Genome project is that it isthe first large scientific undertaking to address the ELSI implicationsthat may arise from the project. Another important feature of theproject is the federal governments long-standing dedication to thetransfer of technology to the private sector. By licensing technologiesto private companies and awarding grants for innovative research, theproject is catalyzing the multibillion-dollar

U.S. biotechnology industry and fostering the development of newmedical applications. What are some practical benefits to learningabout DNA? Knowledge about the effects of DNA variations amongindividuals can lead to revolutionary new ways to diagnose, treat, andsomeday prevent the thousands of disorders that affect us. Besidesproviding clues to understanding human biology, learning aboutnonhuman organisms DNA sequences can lead to an understanding oftheir natural capabilities that can be applied toward solving challengesin health care, energy sources, agriculture, and environmental cleanup.
