GLOBAL WARMING

What is Global Warming??

A gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, CFCs, and other pollutants.

Global warming is when the earth heats up (the temperature rises). It happens when greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, water vapor, nitrous oxide, and methane) trap heat and light from the sun in the earth’s atmosphere, which increases the temperature. This hurts many people, animals, and plants. Many cannot take the change, so they die.

What is the Green House Effect??

The greenhouse effect is when the temperature rises because the sun’s heat and light is trapped in the earth’s atmosphere. This is like when heat is

trapped in a car. On a very hot day, the car gets hotter when it is out in the parking lot. This is because the heat and light from the sun can get into the

car, by going through the windows, but it can’t get back out. This is what the greenhouse effect does to the earth. The heat and light can get through the

atmosphere, but it can’t get out. As a result, the temperature rises.

What are the causes of Global Warming??

• Natural Causes – Natural causes are causes created by nature. One

natural cause is a release of methane gas from arctic tundra and wetlands. Methane is a greenhouse gas.

• Pollution – In most cases, fossil fuels are burned to create

energy and electricity. Many pollutants (chemicals that pollute the air, water, and land) are sent into the air when fossil fuels are burned. Some of these chemicals are called greenhouse gasses.

• Cutting Down of trees - – Trees and other plants collect carbon dioxide

(CO2), which is a greenhouse gas. This gas, CO2, collects light and heat (radiant energy), produced by the sun, and this makes the earth warmer.

Some Facts about Global Warming!!

• There is more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere today than at any point in the last 800,000 years

• In the last century, sea levels rose roughly 7 inches after not having changed noticeably in the previous 2,000 years. Sea levels rising are an effect of global warming and put many states at risk of existing in the near future.

• Consequences of global warming include drought, severe hurricanes, massive fires, and melting of the polar caps.

• Global warming puts coral reefs in danger as warmer water increases the possibility of coral diseases and the rising sea levels makes it more difficult for coral to receive adequate sunlight..

How can we help reduce Global Warming??

• Plant trees• Reduce, Reuse, Recycle• Switch every light in your house to an energy-saving bulb• Wear a sweater instead of turning up the heat in your house• Wear lighter clothing when it’s hot instead of turning on a fan• Turn lights electrical appliances when not in use• Take shorter showers• Skip the car ride and use your bike, or walk or take the bus• Don’t buy bottled water; drink tap water, and filter it if you like• Eat lower on the food chain (less meat) and eat fewer processed foods• Use Less Heat and Air Conditioning• Buy Energy-Efficient Products• Encourage Others to Conserve
