Early Initiatives

Recognition for the development of the first solar water heater is given to Arthur Coppin, a Barbadian chemist and Sir Frank Hutson who were told to build one in 1935 Then came Anthony Hoad, who along with a Simpson of D.M.Simpson also constructed solar water heaters in the sixties

The first Oil Shock

The oil disruption of 1973 provided the spark that would rekindle the use of solar energy for water heating.

Government Involvement The Late JMGM “Tom” Adams, former Prime Minister of Barbados, was attracted to the concept of building your own solar water heater – he made one with the assistance of his plumber.

Unhappy with the temperature produced, Mr. Adams sought out Solar Dynamics for assistance.

So satisfied was he with the performance and the reduction in his gas consumption, with a 100 lb cylinder lasting three and a half times as long, that he launched a solar tax rebate to home owners in 1980

Government Involvement Support successive Governments has contributed to the success of this industry. During the tenure of His Excellency The Hon. Errol Barrow, the plant of Solar Dynamics was officially opened at White Park Road.

Here His Excellency stated his commitment that all housing projects should have solar hot water systems.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory calculated that Barbados saved 15,000 metric tons of carbon emission from 35,000 Solar Hot Water Systems in 2002.This corresponds to an average saving of:

428 kgCO2 per system per year

This estimate is in accordance with the US Department of energy (25.4 metric tons of carbon per terajoule).

Summary

Historically Barbados has demonstrated a culture of movement towards Sustainable development. This has been evidenced not only by our success in the solar thermal industry but at the overarching strategic level when we hosted the S.I.D.S Conference 1994 and were the first Caribbean territory to articulate plans for a Green Economy
