Entrepreneurial Leadership (EL) summarizes ALA’s approach to leadership education in the world; juxtaposing two separate but critically interwoven ideas: values-based leadership and entrepreneurial thinking, with a foundation of business management skills.

ALA believes that leadership is the ability to inspire and mobilize groups of people towards a common goal. We believe that leadership must not only be effective; it must also be ethical in nature, ensuring that the outcomes of a leader’s actions are positive overall.

Entrepreneurial Leadership at the CoreENTREPRENEURIAL THINKING + VALUES-BASED LEADERSHIP + BUSINESS MANAGEMENT SKILLS

Contrary to conventional knowledge, entrepreneurial thinking is not simply pursuing a business interest in order to create personal wealth; at ALA, we believe that being entrepreneurial-minded transcends business or profit generation. A leader with an entrepreneurial mindset is one with an orientation towards action, risk taking, dilemma flipping, creativity, thriving within constraints, design thinking and human-centered solutions, whether in the for-profit, non-profit or public sector.

The study and practice of entrepreneurial leadership is the common thread that runs through all programs at African Leadership Academy.

Participants practice leadership by working with social ventures, learn from start-up and experienced entrepreneurs, develop skills through team-based challenges, build a global network of peers, and discover the history, beauty, and diversity of South Africa.

GSP creates a challenging and stimulating environment for emerging leaders to collaborate with a diverse group of their peers from around the world to share ideas and identify opportunities for global change.

At GSP, I learned a number of useful lessons about what makes a great leader. I also enjoyed the work we did at our BUILD lab site as well as the excursions and I am grateful that I learned about the BUILD process. Furthermore, I believe that the BUILD process and the lessons I learned about leadership can be applied to almost any endeavor one chooses to take on in life, and hence, I would recommend the GSP program to anybody, regardless of what their academic interests may be.”

John Rice-Cameron, GSP 2015 (USA)

GSP transformed my life! The three weeks I spent at ALA’s GSP were really meaningful. I learnt new things about myself, the way I treat people in teams for example, and how to practice good leadership skills – but the most important take away is the fact that I now see things differently. I have discovered new values and I’m not that impulsive anymore. I now know I can make an impact if I work hard and that I can inspire others to be active in pursuing their dreams. This was certainly the best experience I’ve ever had.”

Radovan Bunganic, GSP 2015 (Slovakia)

“ “”Why do you want to travel outside your continent next summer when there’s a lot to learn here? Don’t think twice, especially if you are African; ALA’s Global Scholars Program is the program to attend. You not only explore your full potential in just three weeks and visit beautiful historic sites and sceneries in Johannesburg, but you also make global friends with different backgrounds, cultural experiences, hobbies and interests. These people with whom you’ll work will provide crucial raw material needed for creativity, a fundamental skill needed in an individuals’ life.”

Maame Efua Benyi, GSP 2016 (Ghana)

Discover Johannesburg!

Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa, is by far one of the most astonishing places in the world. Literally translated “City of Gold”, Jo’burg is named for its large gold deposits and mineral-rich Witswatersrand hills. With a population of nearly five million people, Johannesburg is home to the one of the most diverse populations in the world in terms of ethnicities and cultures.

From historical sites reflecting the past of the country, such as the Apartheid museum and Vilakazi Street (home to two Nobel Peace Laureates – Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela); to modern structures such as the famed Sandton City Mall and the prominent street art scene in downtown Jo’burg, passing by Nelson Mandela Bridge, the City of Gold offers a unique and thrilling experience to its visitors.

Johannesburg is also home to the Cradle of Humankind and Sterkfontein Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for being the world’s richest hominid site where the earliest ancestors of humankind were discovered. The Lion Park, Johannesburg Zoo, Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens and several other nature reserves make Johannesburg a city worth visiting and exploring.

All of ALA’s Global Programs have a powerful relationship with the City of Johannesburg. It serves as inspiration, context and a powerful classroom. Each year, we seek out amazing individuals and organizations that enable us and our program participants to engage effectively with the city and its constant evolution.

ALA Model African Union

African Leadership Academy Model African Union (ALAMAU) is an annual leadership conference for young leaders around Africa and across the world, simulating the activities of the African Union. ALAMAU was established in 2013 as a platform for young leaders to develop implementable solutions to African development challenges through diplomacy and international cooperation, in a format inspired by the Model United Nations and the African Union.

Delegates to ALAMAU serve as representatives of various African governments on organs of the African Union, affording them the opportunity to study complex African issues, understand the positions of African countries, and learn to successfully negotiate without compromising national interests.

BUILD-in-a-BoxTwo-day Entrepreneurial Leadership camp facilitated by a team of ALA students using a portable teaching toolkit

ALA has developed BUILD-in-a-Box, facilitated by ALA students and alumni, as a programme that is designed to build and strengthen Africa’s youth-level entrepreneurial ecosystem by igniting an entrepreneurial mind-set among youth and facilitating concrete opportunities for first-hand experience designing and leading social or business ventures.

The curriculum is based on BUILD, a unique curriculum framework for teaching youth entrepreneurship. Participants are first trained to Believe that they have the power to change the world around them, and embrace a mind-set of continual improvement. They then learn to build empathy and Understand the community they intend to serve with an entrepreneurial venture. Young entrepreneurs then Invent a wide range of possible solutions, prototyping and testing their ideas by Listening to feedback from potential customers and other stakeholders. After a process of iteration and improvement, they Deliver impactful new ventures and solutions by mobilizing resources and leveraging networks.

Other programs at ALA

African Leadership Academy is a hub of leadership and entrepreneurial activities. We work with a range of young leaders from across Africa on various programs throughout the year. Here are some of our other programs:

A two year pre-university program centered on Entrepreneurial Leadership, African Studies and Writing & Rhetoric, and the Cambridge A’Levels

Each year, ALA identifies young leaders between the ages of 16 and 19 with demonstrated leadership potential and a strong sense of purpose. Through our unique curriculum at the Academy, they develop the skills, mindset and network to contribute towards our mission of enabling lasting peace and shared prosperity across the continent. After graduating, ALA continues to cultivate these leaders throughout their lives, in university and beyond. We support their growth through access to internships, career opportunities and high-impact networks of people and capital that will empower them to create transformative change.

What happens when I arrive in South Africa? Students and educators arriving by air should travel into Johannesburg’s O.R Tambo International Airport, the largest in South Africa. All arrivals are met by a clearly identifiable ALA welcome team that will escort participants to our campus in Honeydew or the program venue.

Should I be concerned about safety? ALA offers a safe, world-class boarding school environment. All students live on our secure campus in Honeydew, a quiet suburb of Johannesburg, with experienced residential faculty and 24-hour staffed security. The ALA campus has a strict access policy and the residence area is protected by a biometric system, which limits entry to only the residents of each hall. Each hall has an emergency fire door, which is permanently armed. There are surveillance cameras, fire extinguishers, and emergency switches on every hall. All excursions – whether in the Johannesburg area or elsewhere in South Africa – are accompanied by ALA adults and carefully planned with a risk management screening
