~ WELCOME! ~

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to our third Global Responsibility Conference. As young leaders in our community, your future is being moulded by events that occur locally as well as globally. How do you begin to make sense of the forces that shape our world and acquire the knowledge, skills, and sensitivities to act as responsible global citizens? What does it mean to participate in a meaningful way towards social justice for all? The goal of this conference is to equip young leaders as compassionate, aware, and active global citizens empowered to make positive change in a complex and evolving world. You will engage in presentations, activities and discussions to help you understand more clearly complex global issues, think critically about responses to issues at hand, and discuss ways in which you can contribute meaningfully to a more secure, just, and sustainable future. Through your learning experiences at this conference, you will gain the tools, skills, and supports to help move you towards active global citizenship in our world. We look forward to your contributions as you share your experiences and ideas with one another. We would like to take the opportunity to offer our grateful thanks to the presenters for sharing their expertise with great enthusiasm and to the many people who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this conference a reality. Sincerely, The GRC 2016 Student Leaders Rawan Al Ojaily, Rawan Al Maawali, Simone Ingstrup, Madison Liew, Livia Newman, Esther Ojum, Roan Raina, Vanessa Wedick, and Wilson Ye Faculty Sponsors: Kirsten Davel & Simone Kuklinski

~ Keynote Speaker ~

Closing Keynote Address: Keven Fletcher “It’s Not All About You and It’s All About You”

Currently serving as the Chaplain and Faculty Mentor at St. Michaels University School, Keven divides his time between public speaking, process facilitation, and exploring life choices with staff and students. An ordained minister within the United Church of Canada, his roles centred on congregational ministry and conflict resolution support. Prior to this work, Keven joined an organizational change and development firm, specialising in values identification and organizational culture within both the private and public sectors. Alongside these endeavours, Keven headed a non-profit that promoted discussion on ethics within the corporate community, including the establishment of a regional ethics award in conjunction with the country’s largest credit union. Keven also served on the boards of outreach societies that focused on providing food, shelter, and services to members of the street community. In his career, Keven has spoken at educational symposiums and professional association gatherings, most recently on character development and cultural appropriation. His fondness of global wisdom stories led to the production of a novel, When It Matters Most. Holding degrees in Economics (Bachelor of Arts) and Theology (Master of Divinity and Master of Theology), Keven’s formal academic focus was on Applied Ethics and Corporate Culture. Afterwards, his learning interests expanded to include Mediation, Conflict Resolution, Leadership Theory, Character Education and Professional/Personal Coaching. Keven lives in Victoria, British Columbia with his amazingly resilient wife of over 25 years. Over the years, the household has included a series of cats, several Great Danes, and, almost inexplicably, one Miniature Schnauzer. Outside of work, he can be found commuting on his bike, toying with his camera, or enjoying great food with friends.

A3 and P3

David Lynch “Political Simulation: Process and Procedure in Democratic Decision-Making”

David is enthusiastic about learning how the world works, what has come before us, and how we relate to one and other. “Every day, as I teach politics,” David says, “I am constantly reminded how often past events influence the present. I try to inspire similar curiosity in my students.” David’s favourite teachers were those who made learning fun, and he learned the most from experiential activities like simulations, debates and problem-solving scenarios. In his Senior year at SMUS he realized that he was more of an “artsy” type than a scientist, and wanted to learn about history and international relations. He wasn’t sure which college to attend or what to study, so he spent a year with Canada World Youth, living and working with a team of Canadians and youth from Bénin, first in Quebec, and then in West Africa. “Doing work placements in a cardboard box factory for the mentally-challenged and an elementary school really broadened my horizons,” says David. “It was a truly life changing experience, and has inspired me to return again and again to Africa. It also inspired me to seek out a career that would hopefully allow me make positive difference in the world.” After co-op terms in various government departments, David decided that teaching was his calling. His path wound through Newfoundland, to Uganda, and then back to the Island when a job came up at SMUS. In addition to teaching History 9, Global Politics 10, and AP Comparative Government and Politics, he has also coached the Junior and Senior soccer squads. He currently facilitates the Public Discourse Club, organizes the annual Model Commonwealth conference and is a teacher sponsor for the Pride Alliance and the Justice Action groups. When he is not in school, David can be found relaxing at his cabin in the wilderness of Clayquot Sound, on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Workshop participants will receive training on the processes and procedures followed at a multi-lateral emergency meeting. Participants will apply their learning to a specific scenario which will provide an opportunity for them to experience the challenges and consequences of democratic decision-making. Workshop facilitators will guide participants in a dialogue to debrief their experiences and direct them in a discussion of the role and responsibilities of global citizens.

A5 and P5 Kirsten Davel “Sustainable Development Goals: Tapping into Personal Strengths and Passions”

Kirsten began teaching at Hamilton Boys' High School and Thomas Coulter Junior School in Zimbabwe. She spent four years teaching in Johannesburg, South Africa, dividing her time between geography at Jeppe Girls’ High School and English at Dawnview High School. Since coming to SMUS she has won the Excellence in GIS Education award along with Cheryl Murtland. “Geography is life and life is geography,” says Kirsten. “It's about the real world and the real world is complex and interesting and wonderful!” At SMUS, she has taught geography and economics, including AP Human Geography and is now Assistant Director of Academics. Her extracurricular activities include the Global Responsibility strand of Leadership at SMUS in partnership with Tony Goodman. She is also involved in planning and organizing global experiences for students in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Cape Town, South Africa, that are focused on service, education, and culture. “I want to guide children to realise that they have a voice and can act for social justice,” says Kirsten. “I want students to be passionate about their world and help them discover their role in it.” This workshop includes presentations and hands-on activities that will illustrate ways in which teens can learn about the challenges faced by glocal (global and local) communities. Using the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, participants will share their ideas and engage in dialogue and brainstorming about how youth can work together to address injustice by creating a personalized action plan that taps into their strengths and passions.

A6 and P6 Clayton Daum “A Humble Solution for Clean Water”

Clayton Daum is originally from Calgary, Alberta and has travelled frequently with his family, living and going to school in Mexico, France and Quebec City. He has been a Spanish teacher at St. Michaels University School for the last four years and previously taught Civics and Leadership at Victoria High School. He has travelled extensively throughout the world, spending most of his time recently in Latin America working as a volunteer. On a recent year long trip, where he hitchhiked from Chile to Mexico, he found there to be many common bonds between all people of Latin America. One of these was the desire to have access to safe drinking water and the need for a simple, affordable and accessible solution.

Clayton completed training on building, implementing, and maintaining Biosand filters through CAWST (Center for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology), a non-profit organization out of Calgary that works on the premise that education and training to build local capacity is essential to any successful change in areas related to water and sanitation. He is now in the early stages of initiating a project to build, install and ensure maintenance of the filters in communities in Nicaragua and is keen to share the potential of the technology with a wider audience. He is passionate about the need for all people to have access to safe water and his love for Latin America makes this an especially important project.

This workshop will be a combination of hands-on and theoretical work, focussed on the production of clean, safe and accessible water. The workshop will discuss some of the basic needs of individuals and communities in relation to water usage, some of the barriers to having these needs met, and some viable solutions to overcoming these obstacles. The main focus of the latter portion of the workshop will be the construction, implementation, maintenance and sustainability of the Biosand filter, the brainchild of Dr. David Manz who invented the simple device in 1993. While the Biosand Filter will be the main focus of discussion related to available solutions, alternative methods will also be discussed. Participants can expect to work in small groups and should be prepared to do a small amount of physical activity.
