The United Nations was set up in 1945, after the Second World War, as a way of bringing people together and to avoid further wars.

World War II was the biggest war that humans have ever had. Almost all of the countries in the world fought in this war. The war started in 1939 and finished in 1945. Many people died in this war and the entire world was very sad.

After the war, people never wanted it to happen again. So they created the United Nations. The job of the United Nations is to make sure countries don’t fight with each other and can help each other.

It started with 51 countries.

There are now 192 member countries.

The goals of the United Nations are tolerance and friendship among all national, racial or religious groups and maintenance of peace.

The UN aims to make sure that people don’t suffer from hunger and homelessness.

Suffer means to hurt very badly.

Hunger is when a country doesn’t have enough food for its people. Those people are almost always hungry.

Homelessness is when a person doesn’t have a shelter to protect them.

The United Nations has a special section called UNICEF that tries to help children.

The UN has a convention on children’s right. They would like all countries to follow it, as a set of rules about the treatment of children.

A convention is a special meeting where people share ideas about how to fix a problem.

Treatment means the way we act toward people.

Some countries use children in their armies.

Many children work in factories. Poor countries can’t afford to provide

schools.
