What is the research?

Global Multinationals and Corporate Transferees: A Worldwide Review is a report and associated

MultinationalBASE™ dataset about multinational enterprises around the world and the expatriate

and other corporate transferees who are employed by them. Using its proprietary Global

Multinationals Model, Finaccord provides a worldwide analysis that provides the following

information:

- the total number of multinational enterprises in each year from 2013 to 2017 and with a forecast

for each year through to 2021, segmented by revenue band and region of headquarters;

- the total number of multinational enterprises in 2017 alone, segmented by industry sector;

- cross-tabulations of the total number of multinational enterprises in 2017 alone by revenue band,

region of headquarters and industry sector;

- the total number of expatriate and other corporate transferees employed by multinationals in each

year from 2013 to 2017 and with a forecast for each year through to 2021, segmented by revenue

band and region of headquarters;

- the total number of corporate transferees employed by multinationals in 2017 alone, segmented

by industry sector;

- cross-tabulations of the total number of corporate transferees employed by multinationals in 2017

alone by revenue band, region of headquarters and industry sector.

What is the research (continued)?

In addition, using the MultinationalBASE™ dataset that accompanies this study, segmentations of

the top 730 multinational enterprises are provided by various criteria, namely:

- number of countries in which active;

- percentage of total revenues outside country of headquarters;

- growth (or decline) in total revenues;

- actual or approximate number of employees that are expatriate or other corporate transferees.

Finally, and again using the MultinationalBASE™ dataset, rankings of the top 730 multinational

enterprises are provided by various criteria, namely:

- total revenue;

- revenue outside country of headquarters;

- growth (or decline) in total revenues;

- percentage of total revenue outside country of headquarters;

- percentage of total employees outside country of headquarters;

- actual or approximate number of employees that are expatriate or other corporate transferees.

What is the rationale?

The rationale for this report and associated MultinationalBASE™ dataset derives from the fact that

no similar analysis has been produced at any time in the past in spite of the significance of

multinational enterprises and the expatriate and other corporate transferees that they employ to a

variety of different types of entity.

These comprise organisations that serve the multinationals themselves, which include financial

institutions such as banks, plus non-financial ones such as technology firms and providers of

recruitment solutions, and also companies that develop products and services specifically for

expatriate and other corporate transferees, such as health insurers and providers of international

mobility services.

Leveraging its previous research into the global expatriate population plus its expertise in

quantifying and segmenting enterprises by size and sector, Finaccord aims to provide through this

study unique and detailed insights into the worldwide environment for multinational enterprises and

their employees who are classifiable as corporate transferees.

How are multinationals defined?

Finaccord has defined the concept of a multinational enterprise as comprising any for-profit

organisation (including state-owned entities) that has annual revenues of at least USD 200 million,

that has substantial operations (via subsidiaries and / or branches) in at least one country outside

the country of its headquarters, and that is not majority-owned by any other corporate entity (in

order to avoid double-counting), since numerous larger multinational groups have multiple

subsidiaries which themselves have annual revenues of more than USD 200 million and that

operate in more than one country). The revenue threshold of USD 200 million has been used in

order to focus on enterprises that are likely to employ significant numbers of expatriate or other

corporate transferees.

How are corporate transferees defined?

Finaccord has defined corporate transferees as individuals entering a country on a posting from a

for-profit organisation who are considered to have already worked for the same organisation in

another country and who have been transferred contractually within the organisation to the

destination country on a temporary basis of between three months and ten years. Note that the

count of corporate transferees does not include their dependents (i.e. spouses and children) who

will in many cases relocate with their family members, unless these individuals are themselves also

transferees. Corporate transferees include both expatriate transferees (which Finaccord defines

as employed individuals working temporarily in a country other than their country of origin for a

period of between six months and five years) and other transferees (defined as employed

individuals working temporarily in a country other than their country of origin either for a period of

between three and six months or for more than five years).

What are the key features of the research?

Key features of this research include:

• unique insights into the global environment for multinational enterprises which numbered around

12,230 worldwide in 2017, up from around 11,300 at the end of 2013;

• detailed data for each of the world’s leading 730 multinational enterprises including the percentage

of their revenues that they derive from non-domestic markets, the percentage of their employees

based in non-domestic markets and the actual or approximate number of their employees

classifiable as expatriate or other corporate transferees;

• analysis of expatriate and other corporate transferees worldwide including their number and

segmentation according to the revenue band, region of headquarters and industry sector of the

multinational enterprises that employ them;

• forecasts for both expatriate and other corporate transferees and the multinational enterprises that

employ them – by 2021, it is predicted that their numbers will have risen to around 1.01 million and

How can the research be used?

You may be able to use this report and the MultinationalBASE™ dataset that accompanies it in one

or more of the following ways :

• understand who the world’s multinationals are, the magnitude and rate of growth of their revenues,

where they are based and how they break down by industry sector;

• assess which of the leading multinational enterprises are most worth targeting as global accounts

given their growth, the degree to which they have diversified internationally and the number of

expatriate and other corporate transferees that they employ;

• identify the industry sectors (and specific multinational enterprises) that employ the highest

numbers of expatriate and other corporate transferees;

• plan your own organisation’s strategy for targeting multinationals worldwide and / or the corporate

transferees that they employ with reliable global data forwards to 2021.

Who can use the research?

1. Organisations seeking to serve multinationals at a global level: numerous types of company

compete to win global accounts with multinational enterprises – these include accountancy

firms, banks, insurers, public relations consultancies, recruitment solutions providers and

technology enterprises, among others;

2. Organisations focused on providing services to corporate transferees: expatriate and other

transferees employed by multinationals constitute a viable target audience for various types of

financial institution including banks, insurers, assistance firms, investment managers and

providers of international payment services, plus non-financial entities such as relocation

consultancies;

3. Management consultancies: if your company is helping a client firm with its strategy for

targeting multinationals or the expatriate and other corporate transferees that they employ, then

this research will provide it with a unique analysis of the global landscape, saving time and

effort on researching the subject itself.

What are some of the key findings? (cont.)

4) Key findings from the executive summary include:

• there were a total of around 12,230 multinational enterprises worldwide with revenues of at least

USD 200 million in 2017 and their number increased at a compound annual rate of 2.0% between

2013 and 2017;

• furthermore, there were around 838,600 expatriate and other corporate transferees employed by

these multinationals in 2017 and, given a compound annual rate of 4.1% since 2013, this number

has been growing at a faster rate than the number of multinational enterprises;

• while multinationals with annual revenues in excess of USD 20 billion in 2017 accounted for only

4.0% of the total number of multinational enterprises in that year, they are estimated to have

accounted for 54.9% of the total number of corporate transferees;

• among all multinationals globally, Tata Group employs the most expatriate and other corporate

transferees followed by two other India-based enterprises, namely Infosys and Wipro, and then by

the state-owned China National Petroleum and Taiwan-based manufacturing group Foxconn.
