Upper Spencer Gulf of South Australia.
Mark Malcolm, Manager GMUSG, is based in Port Pirie and is primarily responsible for managing and
delivering GMUSG services to members and stakeholders. Mark is a tertiary qualified business

GMUSG derives income from 3 sources. Member annual subscriptions and profits generated via an
annual conference and trade expo account for around two thirds of GMUSG revenues.
GMUSG also receives support from the South Australian Government, via annual grants from the
Department of State Development and to a lesser extent local government support from the Upper
Spencer Gulf Common Purpose Group.

WHAT WE DO
GMUSG activities are prioritised around our Objectives and focus on: -
Collaboration
Promoting our sector
Developing supplier capability
Exchanging information
Maximising local participation
The following examples help describe the work we do.
GMUSG & SACOME Annual Conference and Trade Expo
GMUSG is primarily responsible for a conference and trade expo held each year in the Upper
Spencer Gulf. The 2-day event attracts up to 390 attendees and 60 exhibitors each year. The
event is the largest industry gathering in regional SA and is now recognised as South
Australia’s most important event for resource sector contractors and suppliers.

SA Resources Supply-Chain Panels
GMUSG in partnership with Ausindustry (Federal Government) hosts quarterly Supply-Chain Panel
Sessions. The Supply-Chain Panel sessions enable small and medium size suppliers to present their
company pitch and gain valuable feedback from a panel of procurement professionals. Participating
businesses gain valuable advice on presenting to major customers and better positioning their
company in resources and energy markets.
Customer Engagement
Project developers and major asset owners are increasingly looking to GMUSG to help broker
engagement with local and South Australian suppliers. GMUSG develops supplier lists based on
customer supplied scope of works; helps organise supplier tours; and individual introductions to
potential suppliers. Our value lay in making the task of engaging with regional suppliers easy.
USG Buyer Tour
During March 2016 we hosted a highly successful 3-day Buyer Tour of the USG for 11 resource sector
asset owners and tier 1 contractors. The Tour included 14 supplier site-visits throughout the Upper
Spencer Gulf and 3 business networking events in Whyalla, Port Augusta and Port Pirie.
The aim of the USG Buyer Tour was to provide resources and energy buyers first-hand knowledge of
USG supplier capability. GMUSG member firms benefitted significantly by having 11 prospective
buyers present at their respective sites. A rare and valuable opportunity to promote USG capabilities.

Indigenous Business Development Program
GMUSG understands the importance of growing participation through indigenous owned business
enterprises in resources and energy. Many of our major customers actively seek indigenous owned
businesess as suppliers.
GMUSG is currently working with 9 indigenous organisations, 5 of which are currently operating as
contractors and suppliers to the resources and energy sector. Our shared goal is to maximise
indigenous owned business participation in resources and energy supply-chains.
During 2015-16 we helped existing indigenous businesses address capability and refine their business
development tools; we introduced indigenous businesses to USG Buyer Tour members; and facilitated
opportunities for individual businesses to meet prospective buyers. We will soon host an Indigenous
Business Meet-the-Buyer Forum and Supply-Chain Panel Session at Port Augusta.

Communication
Engagement and communication between and among buyers and sellers can be difficult and time
consuming, GMUSG acts to improve the flow of information and engagement among market
participants. This reduces costly and duplicated effort by small and medium sized suppliers seeking
market intelligence and face-to-face interaction with buyers. Equally, asset owners, project
developers and tier 1 contractors can better engage with local and South Australian supply-chains via
GMUSG. Examples where GMUSG adds value include: -
Regular member and stakeholder Newsletters and Email Alerts
Our annual Conference and Trade Expo
One-off customer/supplier forums and project briefings
Buyers Tours
Individualised supplier listings and introductions
