    Charles G. MacDonald is Professor of International Relations at Florida International University.

    He has taught at FIU since 1977. His teaching and research have focused on the Middle East,Kurdish ethnicity, international law, and human rights. Originally from Ohio, he grew up in

    Florida and earned his BA from Florida State University. He earned his MA and PhD in Foreign

    Affairs from the University of Virginia. He had a parallel career in the Air Force Reserve for

    more than 30 years, primarily working on the Middle East and on counterdrugs at the nationallevel. He also served on the US Military Delegation to NATO. His students have been successful

    in law, politics, education, diplomacy, the military, and various government agencies in the

    service of the United States and other countries. His most recent book is Kurdish Identity:

    Human Rights and Political Status, 2007 (jointly edited with Carole A. O'Leary). His most

    recent research on the Kurds will appear in April 2012 in The Wiley-Blackwell Companion to

    Religion and Social Justice.

    Jan Kokol-Katz, -- Director of Undergraduate Studies in Criminology, Department of

    Sociology, University of Miami: The construction of Identity

    Mirsad Krijestorac, Doctoral Student & Fellow, Middle Eastern Studies, F.I.U., will givea presentation on religious and ethnicity in the Balkans. Mirsad is specializing on the subject

    and has presented papers on this subject in different national conferences (He is a doctoral

    candidate in our department and a fellow at Middle East Studies).

    Lawrence Abraham Consults regularly for the Ethiopian and Nigerian governments onEducation and Conflict Issues; as well as for the US Strategic Studies Institute. In addition to

    teaching, his interest is in bringing the academy closer to the wider community. He is the author

    of State Culture and Ethnicity in West Africa. His forthcoming book On Navigating David is

    due out in Spring. He makes regular appearances on VOA TV/Radio to Africa on issuespertaining to conflicts in Africa.
