description

Explosion is defined as an abrupt increase in the energy (chemical, mechanical or nuclear) or volume in an uncontrolled manner accompanied by rise in temperature and release of gases. There are many sources of explosion such as leakage of gases or vapors, dust, pressure expansion, nuclear etc. To prevent it, several types of protection measures are adopted when designing products for chemical, electrical, mechanical or nuclear use. Such products are termed as explosion proof (Ex) equipment. The current report focuses on protection for electrical products.Explosion Proof equipment does not mean that products will be able to withstand any explosion; instead it means that products will contain any source of explosion within its housings. A broader term can be assigned to these products i.e. explosion protection equipment that contains in itself various protection principles viz, explosion prevention by limiting the operating energy, explosion proof by making the housing robust to withheld any explosion inside itself and explosion segregation by isolating the source of explosion inside a protective medium. The global explosion proof equipment market is expected to grow from $2.85bn in 2013 to around $3.57bn by 2018. Out of the various product segments, IndustryARC expects the lighting systems, surveillance and monitoring systems to drive the market with the highest growth rates of around 8.5% and 13.4% globally. In comparison to these segments the overall explosion proof equipment market is only expected to grow at around 4.6%.

4. EXPLOSION PROOF EQUIPMENT – MARKET FORCES

4.1 MARKET DRIVERS

4.1.1 NEW SAFETY REGULATIONS FOR HAZARDOUS AREAS GETTING STIFFER

In the wake of industrial explosions in the world, the safety enforcement agencies are taking the

necessary initiatives to regulate the regulations strictly across the diverse industries. The OSHA is

ought to remove ban form exempting oil and gas industries from Process Safety Management

Standard. United Nation s Economic Commission for Europe has endorsed IEC Ex

(International Electrotechnical Commission’s Explosion Proof Standards) for promoting safety

of equipment and personnel in explosive areas. The Department of Standards in Malaysia is

organizing the IEC international conference this year to encourage the use of explosion proof

electrical equipment in industries operating particularly in Asia. To create better awareness

among the end user industries in explosion proof equipment market, IEC launched a mobile

application to show international certificates for equipment used in explosive atmospheres.

4.2 OPPORTUNITIES IN OIL & GAS INDUSTRY

The biggest driving factor for explosion proof electrical equipment market is the exploration of

new oil sites across the world. Much of these oil sites have been found in Arctic Zone, often

attributed to be an eco-sensitive area. Federal Officials in Canada are already assessing the

potential oil and gas exploration in eastern Arctic region.

The rapid production boom in shale and oil gas due to high petroleum prices is giving new

dimensions to the explosion proof electrical equipment. The declining reserves in North Sea

have made the Italy’s proven reserves to be highest in Europe. The govt. is planning to double

the domestic oil production by promoting investments from Oil and Gas Companies. This in

turn is going to spur up the market for explosion proof equipment that will be required to install

in the new exploration sites in compliance with the safety standards.

Mining & Oil & Gas industry have become matured but these equipment have found a new

customer base across residential and government facilities, entertainment areas and home

appliances.

With new oil reserves found in Brazil, Italy and Greenland, the market for explosion

proof/protected electrical equipment will surge due to the environmental sensitivity in

these areas.

With the boom in LED market, manufacturers are steering towards interfacing explosion

proof technology in LED lighting systems.

The ever expanding market for explosion proof electrical equipment has made the

competition fierce. It can be understood with recent acquisitions and collaborations:

Eaton Corp. acquires Cooper Crouse-Hinds while Marechal Electric Group joined hands

with TECHNOR ITALSMEA S.p.A. to expand its operation in Oil & Gas industry with

turnover of around $135 million.

Lighting and signaling systems are the most prominent factor contributing to the growth

of explosion protected/proof electrical equipment. With new regulations stirring up for

safety standards, explosion proof equipment market in electrical domain will surge in the

future.
