Global Education Certificate Program Rationale: To support, encourage, and
recognize global learning campus wide.
To provide a framework for students to be actively involved in planning for global learning as part of their regular program planning.
To provide a pathway for students to discover the value of global learning and encourage greater involvement in global learning in their disciplinary programs, particularly through increased participation in global certificate programs.
To develop pedagogical knowledge and skills so that program graduates are prepared to educate for global competence.
Global Learning Outcomes:
Investigate the World: Students investigate the world beyond their immediate environment.
Recognize Perspectives: Students recognize their own and others’ perspectives.
Take Action: Students translate their ideas and findings into appropriate actions to improve conditions.
Educate for Global Proficiency: Students have the pedagogical knowledge and skills to educate K-12 students for global proficiency.
Program ConceptStudents would be required to engage in global learning experiences which could include internationally/globally-focused coursework, language study, study abroad, service, research, leadership opportunities, and participation in extra-curricular activities

Reflection Project
Academic Component At least 12 credits of courses
with global/international content.
Students must identify a major area of focus; all 12 credits must be in the major focus area
General education, coursework for one's disciplinary major, and/or elective coursework all could apply.
Up to two language courses (beyond the minimum requirement for their disciplinary major) that align with major focus area could count toward meeting the coursework requirement.
Intercultural LearningProgram participants would be expected to participate in global learning and global action outside of the classroom through attendance at globally-focused events, performances, films, lectures, exhibits, seminars, and brown bags as well as participation in volunteer activities and clubs.
Global ExperienceAt least one, in-depth
intercultural experience in another country or a domestic culture significantly different from one's own.
Possible qualifying experiences:◦ MSU study abroad◦ Work in an internship
abroad or teach abroad for at least 3-weeks
◦ Be an international student
Capstone Reflection ProjectThe required capstone project will
provide students with the opportunity to evaluate and reflect on their experience in the Global education Certificate Program and its impact on them educationally, personally, and professionally.
Students will be encouraged to complete a project that best meets their needs, goals, and learning style.
Program AdministrationCoursework: Courses drawn from course lists,
tracked through SISIntercultural Learning: Students must track
participation in intercultural learning with a form which requires information about the experience, contact person, and signature of supervisor/coordinator of the experience
Global Experience: Signed information form and reflection paper
Capstone Project: Submitted to coordinator, program committee, and/or end-of-year poster fair
