Simone Lis is the Vice President of Operations with the Better Business Bureau serving Mainland BC.Through her ten years of experience with the BBB, she has worked with a number of agencies promoting education and self-regulation including, ID Theft, Advertising Standards Council - BC region, and the Consumer Protection BC Travel Industry Advisory Group.As the BBB liaison person with law enforcement and regulators, she works with the BBB’s partners to ensure that consumers and businesses protect themselves through honest business practices.

Simone is often out in the community providing presentations to seniors and other groups on various topics related to fraud prevention and wise buying practices. Simone is an avid marathon runner.

Don FastDeputy Minister

Don Fast assumed the responsibility of Deptuy Minister of the Ministry of Economic Development in May 2006. In January 2009 the Ministry was renamed the Ministry of Small Business, Technology & Economic Development which is the primary provincial agency for creating a strong, prosperous and diverse economy that is committed to partnering with British Columbia’s small business community and enhancing research and innovation that continues to shape British Columbia’s economic development.Don Leads the Ministry of Small Business, Technology and Economic Development with responsibility for Asia Pacific Initiatives in building a strong provincial economy that supports job creation and maximizes economic opportunities for citizens throughout the province. Don is also responsible for supporting initiatives to strengthen the province as the Asia-Pacific gateway, economic diversification, trade and business marketing. Don is an experienced leader in developing co operative relationships between government and business to accomplish mutually beneficial goals. He also has extensive international experience in Asia working to influence policy development and create business opportunities for Canadian companies.

From August 2000 until his return to the provincial government, Don was the Regional Director General, Pacific and Yukon Region, Environment Canada. Under his leadership the Pacific and Yukon Region improved stakeholder relations on key federal files. To create stronger links with partners in Asia, Don hosted overseas delegations and led or participated in several missions to Asia.Prior to this, Don was the Assistant Deputy Minister responsible for Environment and Lands Headquarters for the (BC) Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks, and earlier served as acting CEO of the BC Hazardous Waste Management Corporation. Don also worked for the Saskatchewan government in various senior management positions including the Director of federal / provincial relations for Saskatchewan.Don has a science degree for the University of Saskatchewan, and M.Sc form York University and a registered professional engineer.Don is married and has two grown children with four grandchildren and also has a new son who was born is February 2005.

Helmut PastrickChief Economist, Central 1 Credit Union

Helmut Pastrick is Chief Economist for Central 1 Credit Union, the new umbrella organization for the credit union systems in British Columbia and Ontario. The system has about 2.7 million credit union members with a system asset base more than $65 billion.He and the Economics department provide a variety of economic analysis and forecast services to credit unions in BC and Ontario. Economic information is provided to the public in a number of department reports.Prior to joining the Credit Union Central of BC in 1997, he spent many years with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Coporation in BC responsible for analyzing and forecasting the provincial housing market and economy.He is former President of the Association of Professional Economists of BC, a member of the Canadian Association for Business Economics and the BC Economic Forecast Council.He is a multiple-winner of the BC professional association’s Crystal Ball Award given annually to the most accurate economic forecast.

He is frequently called upon by the media to provide comments on economic events and his presentations are in demand by many organizations and groups, including Credit Unions, Trade and Professional Associations and Service Clubs.

Tiku Patel is Group Chief Operating Officer for Aktiv Kapital. Aktiv Kapital has consumer debt purchase and collections operation in 11 countries across Europe and Canada. Aktiv Kapital works in partnership with agencies as a key part of its collections strategies. Tiku is responsible for all of Aktiv’s collections strategies and operations. Prior to joining Aktiv in 2008, Tiku worked for Experian Barclays and Kingfisher.

As Chief Operating Officer for RML, Paul is responsible for purchased and contingent collections, consumer outsource, legal and information services for the various business units of RML Group. RML Group is the largest debt purchaser in the New Zealand Market. Paul started his career on an international graduate recruitment programme within investment banking technology projects in London and comes from a technology background.He holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Management with a major in Applied Computing.

Albert KnowlesChairman, AV Knowles Group

Albert was the only Texaco Island scholar from Trinidad & Tobago, to read for the Bar in England since 1962, and graduated from Grays Inn London as a Barrister at law at age 23. He was the former Regional Legal Advisor to Texaco Trinidad Ltd, based in Port of Spain and is fluent in French, Spanish and English.

He splits his time between Canada and Trinidad & Tobago, where he is the Chairman of three privately owned compa-nies in Trinidad employing over 100 employees within the AV Knowles Group.

Albert’s company is the largest collection and credit reporting company in the Caribbean, and with his extensive legal knowledge he as seen a huge demand for Due Diligence and Know Your Customer reports. Samuel OmukokoManaging Director, Metropol East Africa Limited

A career banker, Sam is the Managing Director and Chief Executive. He has over 12 years experience in the credit ratings and reporting industry as well as 12 years as a practicing banker with Kenya’s leading domestic commercial bank. Sam holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Maths and Statistics from the University of Nairobi and CPA Account-ing certificate. Sam has been involved in many interventions in the financial services and capital markets some of which include: Credit training; Development of credit curriculum for The Kenya Institute of Bankers (KIB) and was Chief Exam-iner in Strategic Marketing and Lending from 2000 top 2006 and Institute of Credit Management of Kenya (ICM-K) where he is a founder member and was Chairman of the Examination Board from 2002 to 2004. He is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (ACIB), UK and a Fellow of the Kenya Institute of Bankers (KIB). Sam was the lead consultant in the SME credit scoring and Credit rating precess for the East African market between 2006 and 2006. He had attended many courses in financial management locally and abroad. Sam overseas the Groups strategic direction and leads the product and enterprise developments across the Group’s varied business and product lines. Sam has also been the lead consultant in the implementation of the SME scoring tool in the three banks in Kenya and Uganda.

He is currently the Treasurer for the East African Credit Bureau Association (EACBA) and was nominated to attend the World Conference on Consumer Credit Reporting and the Third Global Consumer Reporting Conference held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in October 2008.

Steven Gan is a native of Chicago, Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois with a BS in Electrical Engineering and graduated from the Thunderbird - Garvin Graduate School with a Masters of International Management. Mr Gan is also a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Credit Executive.

Steven Gan was the founder and president of Advance & Associates Co., Ltd. in Tokyo from 1992-2004. Advances & Associates was the first company to create and implement the before and after sales total credit risk management product line system in Japan. This business model offered clients a full range of credit risk management products and services in order to provide “total credit risk management support”Through numerous articles, publications, presentations and television appearances, Steven Gan greatly deepened the awareness and understanding of the importance of sound credit risk management throughout Japan. Steven Gan wrote the book titles, “The Blue Eyed Debt Collector, His Struggle” (Japanese only) published by the number two publisher in Japan, Shogakkan, which sold over 20,000 copies.Mr Gan is presently the founder and president of Stellar Risk Management Services (SRMS), Inc. a Northbrook, IL credit risk management consultancy. Together with colleagues Martin Burley and Raf Manji, Branton has pioneered the science of human intention in the field of predictive analytics. Vitaly was born in Saint Petersburg Russia in 1984; is a citizen of the Ukraine residing in Kiev, having obtained a Master at Law at the National University and Advocacy Academy in 2007 and a Business Management Diploma at the British University in 2009.
