England is Famous For:

Early Childhood Education: The Beginning

Early childhood care emerged in England in the late 18th century

Passage of the Education Act of 1870 established compulsory elementary schools for all children ages 5-13

In 1905, five woman inspectors investigated admission of infants into elementary schools

In1911, Margaret McMillan and her sister Rachel established an “open-air nursery”

for impoverished children

McMillan was concerned for the children’s health.

Centers are called “day nurseries”

Similar model to Canadian child care

Schools offer care for children over the age of five

Accessibility and Availability

There are approximately 409, 000 children in care

94% are privately operated and ran from a business perspective

Subsidy is very limited, different approach then Canada

Children under five are entitled to 15 hours per week of childcare, per year (38 weeks), at no cost

The cost of care is around 25-50 £ p/day vs. $34.00- $56.00 Canadian
