• Eight aspects of civilization - cities, government, religions, job specialization, social classes, arts/architecture, public works, and writing.
• civilization = complex highly organized social order. Nomads did not have complex societies.

• The expansion into territory beyond the boundaries of a city created a city-state.
• An empire is a group of states or territories controlled by one ruler.
• City people were ranked according to their jobs, which led to the growth of social classes. Artisans were skilled craftspeople

• Cultural diffusion - spread of ideas, customs, and technologies from one people to another. Interaction among the various civilizations often brought about cultural change.
• Nomadic herders crossed the dry grasslands called steppes.
• Pictographs - simple drawings of the objects they represented. As writing became more complex it could only be done by scribes
