Some helpful hints

MANNER, MATTER and METHOD are considered when adjudicators make decisions in public speaking competitions.

MANNER is the way the speaker delivers the speech and includes -

speaking loudly and clearly speaking with fluency and expression making eye contact

MATTER is the content. Students need to show -

an understanding of multiculturalism a balance of personal opinion and researched facts and information

METHOD is the way the speech has been constructed –

an engaging introduction that creates interest and thought well sequenced paragraphs that inform as well as entertain a thoughtful conclusion that makes a clear point

A quality speech makes a clear point and has a purpose. It engages the audience and its message is easily understood. It has balance between information and facts and personal opinion. It moves from the personal to the family, school, community, national and possibly even international level. A quality speech should be enjoyable, entertaining and interesting. Students need to understand and feel comfortable delivering their speech. It is important that the speech is written in the student’s own words.

Parental Assistance –

There are a number of things parents can do to help and support their child.

Allow your child to choose one of topics which interests them. Ask your child questions about what they believe or what they think. Assist your child to research suitable information related to the topic. Provide assistance to read it, if necessary. Answer any questions your child may have. Allow your child to write a draft on their own. Help your child to edit their work and offer suggestions. Encourage your child to publish their speech onto palm cards. Give your child an opportunity to practise.

If you require further information, please make contact with your child’s class teacher or one of the coordinators.

We look forward to supporting students find their voice, express their opinion and engage an audience.
