Year 4 hosting the Biggest Morning Tea

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Every Day Counts- Please make sure your child is at school every day!

Let’s get behind our 100% attendance target for the rest of the year. We want all students to be 100% attendees for the next 3 terms.

Independent Public School happenings.

Last week two members of our School Council progressed the development of our school ‘Innovation Strategy’ by conducting small group meetings with staff groups. This strategy will enable us to really look closely at what we do at Glenview that is uniquely different from what is done, or how it is done other places. It will also enable us to look closely at what beneficial partnerships we have or might develop to further assist our students.

Some interesting research into student learning behaviour – from Grattan Institute

Glenview State Independent Public School Newsletter: 5 June 2017

The following is extracted from a recent Grattan Institute article - Engaging Students: creating classrooms that improve learning by Peter Goos and Julie Sonnemann: When students are engaged in class, they learn more. It is vital that teachers create the right classroom climate for learning: raising student expectations, developing a rapport with students, establishing routines, challenging students to participate and take risks. These all affect how much their students engage and learn. In Australia, many students are consistently disengaged in class. The main problem is not aggressive and anti-social behaviour. More prevalent and stressful for teachers are minor disruptions, such as students talking back. Nor is it just about noise: nearly one in four students are compliant but quietly disengaged. We do not know exactly what causes students in Australia to disengage – it could be problems at home, or subject matter that is too hard or too easy, or poor-quality teaching. But we do know disengagement matters. Disengaged students are one to two years behind their peers. Students who are quietly disengaged do just as badly as those acting out, and disruptive behaviour also reduces how much other students learn. Overcoming student disengagement is complicated. What is taught and the way it is taught are crucial. But creating a good learning environment in the classroom is necessary too. This report calls for policy reforms to build teacher capabilities to improve classrooms. It avoids simplistic calls for ‘old-fashioned discipline’, but it also acknowledges that compelling content is not enough on its own. The following success factors were identified in another section of the article. • High expectations

• Strong teacher-student relationships • Clarity and structure in instruction • Active learning • Acknowledgement, Encouragement and Praise • Consistent corrections and consequences

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Students, individually and as part of a group, largely express their learned behaviours. The consistent practices and expectations which we as a school, and you as parents, place on them each and every day in every situation, provides children with a baseline of behavioural and attitudinal patterns to guide their behaviour. As young people they need a baseline to work with and they also need to rapidly develop the skills of self-managing their own behaviours and actions so that their learning isn’t impacted by social and other pressures. Library Upgrade: Thank you for your patience as the contractors refurbish our library. Safety is our prime consideration and safety fencing and access to the school is a major concern. Please use the available walkways. As work is undertaken the access paths may change from time to time. Our new Library will feature a complete teaching wall on the eastern end, storage for senior and junior literature, a circulation desk, computer lab and reading spaces, preparation and work spaces, and up to the minute audio visual technology. Yes all in the telephone box ‘Tardus’. Watch this space for the re- opening date.

Car Parking:

Car parking is always a challenge at peak times. Please use only the designated carparks in the designated areas. Help keep our children safe! Please do not pick up or set down children from roadways, car park access roads etc. or any other area which increases the risk of accident or injury to children or adults. Please note the designation of the car park you are occupying- some are 2 min set down bays. Please remember that your driving behaviour in the car park area is on show to everyone –including your own children and others.

Please do not leave your vehicle parked in the 2 min bays. It will assist everyone if these are used as a drop off or pickup only area.

School Hours: School begins at 8:40 a.m. and finishes at 3:00 p.m.

Allergies and Anaphylaxis:

Would you kindly ensure that all food brought into the school for lunches, snacks etc. is entirely free of any nut or nut related products. Your cooperation here is vitally important to ensure that student’s lives are not put at risk.

Wisdom for the week:

The real function of education is to teach one to think intensively, critically and creatively- not to know stuff! - unknown

HOME BAKING TO THE RESCUE

It’s that time of year again! Our annual whole school Athletics Day is coming up on

Thursday 15th June. The P&C will be running a POP UP TUCKSHOP at the shed on

Anderson oval to keep our competitors and spectators well fed. Lots of help is needed on

the day to run the kiosk. If you can spare a small amount of time to lend a hand with food

sales, please contact Kirsty Osborne or Jodie Buemi on 0401 264 871

Calling all Home Bakers….If you are unable to offer help on the day of the sports carnival,

you could consider donating baked goods for us to sell on

the day. Baked goods can be dropped in on the morning

of the event, or Wednesday afternoon to the school hall

kitchen area. The “Bakery” table is a real favourite for

everyone who attends and helps us make the

day a great success.

Please note: We are a nut free school.

STEM DAY What a great day we have all had!

Thank you so much to Jessica from Street Science who wowed us

with her amazing show! We got to meet her robot Mechanoid,

who loves to exercise; watch Hayley’s breath turn to liquid in a

balloon; blow up a rubber mouse with liquid nitrogen; learn all

about how planes fly using a beach ball.

LIONS WRITING COMP

Nearly two months ago several students entered a Lions Club Writing Competition. They all wrote

excellent stories and three were awarded distinction awards. The school champion Eli nearly made

it to the state championships.

Three Lion Club Coaches came to the parade to give out awards and a prize of $50 to Eli.

Everyone who entered tried their best.

By Rylee

Here is a sneak preview of Eli’s story.

I could hear the sobs and cries of my parents, I knew I would never see them again. My name is Daniel, I am a convict sentenced to a life time in jail. I have shaggy brown hair, torn clothes and dark green eyes. I woke up today early, I could feel the sickness in my stomach and I could hear the heavy breathing of the other convicts who were with me. The waves began to rumble and I opened my eyes to see the wooden roof above me. Today is going to be a new day I whispered………………...

Exciting news from the tuckshop…. We are excited by the arrival of our new big oven in

the tuckshop. This update to our equipment gives us much more scope to add to what

we are doing to build a successful and vibrant tuckshop service and tasty fresh seasonal

menus. Watch this space as we roll out some new menu items over the coming weeks.

The P&C meet every second Tuesday of the month at 6pm in the

staff room. Next meeting is 13th June.

NEW KITCHEN IS HERE

HELLO FROM HAYDEN

My name is Hayden Greathead and I am honoured to take up the role of

School Chaplain at Glenview State School while Nikki is on leave. You

may have already seen me around the school or have been at parades

on Monday afternoons. I have quite a unique role within the school

which I would like to highlight in this introduction, so the community can

have an understanding of why I am here and what I do.

Chaplains in general and at Glenview may be involved in any of the following:

Social and/or emotional support — assisting students and others to develop knowledge,

understanding and skills that support learning, positive behaviour and constructive social

relationships through social skills programs.

Mentoring — acting as a role model for students and assisting in the development of supportive

relationships for, with, and among students.

Community development — enhancing the links between the school and its community, working

with school-based support staff and community-based youth organisations and networks to

support students.

Educational support — assisting with classroom activities (under the direction of a teacher) where

involvement by the chaplain/student welfare worker provides further social and emotional

support for students.

Extra-curricular activities — participating in general school activities, for example, camps,

excursions, sports days or coaching team sports.

Spiritual support — providing an additional dimension to the school's care, guidance and support

of students.

My role is to work with students, teachers/staff and parents in a supportive, but non religious

manner. The values and beliefs and ethics I support are those which you, as parents in the school,

and as members of our community, understand and support. While I have my own personal

religious beliefs, these are not part of my role as School Chaplain. In fact chaplains are legally

prevented from promoting any religious denomination.

Please feel free to give me a call on 0754396703. At present my days are Monday and Tuesday.

Thank you for making me feel welcome and I look forward to the journey ahead.

Hayden.

ATHLETICS DAY-WHOLE SCHOOL

Biggest Morning Tea

May 25th saw the Year Four Maths students host a morning tea to

raise money for Cancer research. We brainstormed, planned,

worked out the logistics, catered and served. The students were

very excited and on the day were full of great ideas. The words

“Ms Tilbrook can I….”, reverberated through the garden until I said

“I’m going to change my name”.

We raised $170 for Cancer research and had a great time as well.

Thank you to all the parents and staff who came.

Ms Tilbrook

JUNGLE BOOK : SAVE THIS DATE

Students have been hard at work getting various scenes from the jungle book ready for our full cast rehearsal that is planned for

Mrs McCrea has been very busy getting our costumes ready—parents please make sure you have bought the correct leggings/ pants/ skivvies and jungle singers are making their own head pieces too!

It will be so much fun... get excited.
