Cork City, Co. CorkSituated in the province of Munster, County Cork is the largest and southernmost county in Ireland. It is also the third most populated county in Ireland. The southwest region, including West Cork, is one of Ireland’s main tourist destinations. The county is sometimes known as the “People’s Republic of Cork” because of the county’s frontline role in the Irish War of Independence (1919-21).
Both Gaelic Football and Hurling are popular sports in County Cork, and the Cork teams are among the best in the country. The county colours are red and white, and the Gaelic Football and Hurling teams wear these colours when they play against other Irish counties.
Cork is home to the Blarney Stone at Blarney Castle. Legend has it that kissing the Blarney Stone will make you a skilful, persuasive speaker.
Cobh is also a popular destination, as it was the port where many Irish emigrants boarded for their voyage to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa or the United States.
County Cork has the only wildlife park in Ireland, Fota Wildlife Park located on Fota Island.
