Welcome Back - Principal’s Message
Dear Eagle Families,
I’m very excited for the opportunity to serve as the principal of Glenn Ele-mentary School and look forward to an amazing year. Prior to coming to Glenn, I was a classroom teacher for 17 years and then spent seven years as a district literacy coach. Last year, I had a dual role as principal at Carlock Elementary and district literacy coach. On a per-sonal note, I will be celebrating my 25th wedding anniversary this fall! My hus-band, Jason, works at State Farm and we have two college aged sons. Our oldest is a senior at University of Ala-bama and our youngest son has tempo-rarily deferred college to pursue high level hockey.
It hardly seems possible that sum-mer is coming to an end and the start of the school year is just around the cor-ner! I have been in awe of the countless hours our staff has dedicated to pre-pare the school and classrooms for the arrival of our students. We are eager for school to begin and I feel so fortu-nate to work with such an amazing staff and community.
As a staff we strive to form collaborative and trusting partnerships with all our fami-lies. We know that by working together we can provide the best education possible for each and every student. Communication be-tween home and school is essential. Please know that our doors are always open and we value your input!
This summer Glenn added a few new faces. Ashley Defresse joins us as our new reading teacher. She is a former classroom teacher and literacy coach with several years experi-ence. Pam Witzig has been hired as our new Art teacher. Pam also has several years of teaching experience in and outside of our district. Our last new staff member is Lynda Mitchell. Lynda taught in Champaign for the last 4 years and will work as our 1/2 LBS1. I know they will all be great additions to our Glenn team. I speak for all our staff when I say “Welcome back, we know this is going to be a great year!”

It is so im-portant for parents to be involved in their child’s education. This can happen in many ways– talking to your child about school, helping
with homework, communicating with teachers, volunteering at school, at-tending school functions and more.
If volunteering at school is something that interests you, there will be many
opportunities throughout the year. Please consider the follow-ing:
Express interest to your child’s teacher and let him/her know how you might be able to help
Check with Mr. Starr and Mrs. Bunting if you are inter-ested in helping in the IMC.
If you are only available peri-odically, leave your name in the office. There are certain times of the year when we may ask for assistance.
There are many opportunities to help through the PT0. Be
sure to look through the PTO in-formational packet and keep your eyes/ears open throughout the year.
Volunteer screening information
can be found below. Who wants to lend a
helping hand?
Unit 5 Treat Policy
Please note there is a district pol-icy regarding treats. This policy can be found in the district ele-mentary handbook. Due to health concerns and scheduling, treats
must be coordinated in advance with the classroom teacher. The only time we will have food treats will be for our 2 classroom par-ties.
All treats and snacks must be store bought and in the original packaging. No homemade treats or snacks are allowed at school. Treats that require refrigeration are not permitted. All treats must have a clearly printed list of in-gredients on the original packag-ing.
Unit 5 believes that birthdays are special for children. As a school district, in order to promote a healthy school environment, birth-day recognitions cannot include food items. The decision will be left up to each school as to how they would like to recognize a stu-dent’s birthday, but it cannot in-clude food items.
It is a priority at Glenn Elementary to encourage families to participate in their child’s education. As a result, we welcome the opportunity to have parents and other caring people contribute their time and resources to help improve the quality of education for our students by volunteer-ing.
With that said, it is also a priority for us to provide a welcome and safe environment for our students. In compliance with the Unit 5 Board of Education, we have been asked to have all volunteers provide infor-mation for a background check to ensure the level of safety for our children is maintained. They have partnered with Bushue Human Resources, Inc. to provide this service. Secured Socket Layer tech-
nology is used to protect your information in transit to their systems.
If you have additional questions, you can contact Bushue Human Resources, Inc. at:

Student Drop Off and Pick Up
Drop off and Pick Up
Please read the student drop off and pick up procedures attached to this newsletter. For the start of the school year, we will continue with the same procedures that have been in place for the last several years. If you are drop-ping off your student, please park your vehicle. As you are aware, Glenn Ave-nue is very narrow and there is quite a bit of traffic. When dropping off please make sure you child is ready to exit the vehicle promptly and you do not drop off prior to 7:30. Thank you!
Lunch Information
Be sure to check out the district calen-dar for the dates of the 12 late start days during this school year. These will all take place on Wednesdays during the school year. School will start one hour later on these days. Please plan to have your child at school between 8:30 and 8:40 on late start days. Buses run one hour later on late start. The purpose of the late start Wednesdays is to allow staff members the opportunity to meet for 90 minutes of embedded profession-al development and collaboration, which will improve classroom instruction and
enhance the learning opportunities for our students. The common work time allows us to analyze student data, devel-op goals for our students around this data, and collaborate in the development of effective lessons and instructional strategies to meet our student's needs.
Late Starts
Our first late start is
Wednesday, August 30th.
Please make certain to check the balance in your Skyward lunch account often. If you need your Skyward username and password please call the main office at 557-4418. If you would like to eat lunch with your student please call before 7:45 and let the front office know that you will be coming. You will also need to let them know if you will be purchasing a school lunch for yourself.
Thanks!
Going Home - Change of Routine
If your child is going home any way that is a change from the regular routine, please call or send a note asap. We will not allow them go home any other way without a note or phone call. Adults (other than a parent or legal guardian) picking up a student must be on that stu-dent’s emergency contact list.
-
Cell Phones
If a student brings a cell phone to school,
it must be off and in his/her backpack. If
the phone is out of the backpack or
makes noise during the school day, the
teacher will confiscate the device and a
parent will need to come to the school
office to pick it up.
Electronics/MP3 players
Electronics/MP3 players are not allowed
at school unless a classroom is having a
special event. We are not responsible for
lost, stolen, or damaged equipment.
Expectations
When Glenn implemented PBIS 13 years ago, the staff worked to develop expectations for each area of the
school. At the beginning of the year, staff members will review each of the expectations with the students.
We want our students to know what the expectations look, sound, and feel like. This summer our PBIS
spent several meetings revising our behavior matrix clearly outlining expected behaviors, minor referrals and
major referrals.
Eagle Pride Points—Back by Popular Demand!
Students receive Eagle Pride Points as a reward for positive behaviors. Eagle Pride Points can be awarded
by any staff member when they see a student working especially hard to follow the expectations. Eagle Pride
Points will be used by the students to “buy” items in the school store and/or special opportunities in the
classroom and around the school.
Changes to Referral Forms (Pink Slips)
A referral form is completed when a student is not making positive behavior choices. Depending on the se-
verity of the issue, the referral will be considered a major or a minor. If a student has a major referral,
he/she will come to the office to talk with Mrs. Backe, the Principal, and a copy of the referral will be sent
and/or mailed home. Please sign and return this. If a student is referred to the office for a major, Mrs.
Backe will make an effort to contact you by phone. Major referrals will be on full sized pink paper.
If a student has a minor referral, one copy of the form will be kept by our PBIS team and one copy will be
sent home. Pease sign and return the form to school the next day. This alleviates the need for the teacher
or principal to call your home or place of work during the day. Please discuss the importance of respectful
behavior at school with your student. A strong home-school partnership is critical to the success of all our
students. Minor referrals will also be pink however they are much smaller in size than the major referrals.

Did you know that any State Farm employee who volunteers 40 hours in one year at Glenn can raise $500.00 for our school? The em-ployee does not have to be a Glenn parent. The hours can be spent doing a variety of tasks, including but not limited to, classroom help, PTO meeting attendance, PTO phone call reminders, office help, clerical work, and bulletin boards. Work can even be completed at home. This year State Farm ex-panded their charitable giving by
enacting a Matching Gift program in addition to the Good Neighbor Grant. This new program allows State Farm employees to have their cash gift to any qualifying charitable organization matched up to $3000 per calendar year. If you work at State Farm or know someone who does who would like to help, please contact Mrs. Backe at 557-4418. We hope to hear from you! Thank you to those of you who are already par-ticipating in this helpful program.
Parent Curriculum Night is Coming!
Mark your calendars! Glenn will be host-ing a Curriculum Night on Thursday, August 31. This will be an important time for you to meet your child’s teach-er and learn about the upcoming school year. Each teacher will be sharing valu-able information for a successful school year. Please schedule an appointment with your child’s teacher if you have any special concerns or questions related to the needs of your child. Teachers will not have an opportunity to meet individ-
ually with parents on curriculum night. There will also be an all school parent presentation on standards based grading and PT0 topics. We look forward to seeing you. Child care for younger sib-lings and students will not be available.
