This guide has been developed in partnership by the Glenelg Shire Council and the State Government Building Inclusive Communities program to assist people with disabilities, their families and carers. It is designed to give an indication of access into and within local eateries.

This Accessible Eating Guide takes a whole approach look at the eateries involved and includes but not limited to areas such as; parking, menu, seating, toilets, flooring types and space for manoeuvring.

The Glenelg Shire Council supports this initiative and encourages businesses to make their premises accessible to all people. This guide lists eateries that have volunteered an access appraisal of their premises.

If you would like your business to be included in future publications please contact the Access and Inclusion Officer on 5522 2563.

The Glenelg Shire Council would like to thank all businesses across the Shire who volunteered for involvement in this guide.

Australian Standards-Design for Access and MobilityAS 1428 have been prepared and revised in light of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) which has been in effect since March 1993.Australian Standards recommends the basic requirements for physical access that need to be considered when planning, developing and constructing new buildings and facilities. For a number of reasons not all premises currently comply with the Australian Standards 1428The listing of an eatery and its facilities in this guide does not guarantee its compliance with the Australian Standards 1428. This guide is intended to provide potential customers with information that can assist them to choose a venue that fits their individual requirements.

ToiletsIdentification of a designated accessible toilet does not automatically mean that the toilet is compliant with the current AS 1428 requirements. It indicates that there is a toilet marked with the International Symbol of Access and the cubicle may be of a larger size than a standard cubicle. Appropriate fixtures and fittings may not yet be installed to ensure full access. Potential customers should check with the individual eatery to obtain further details if required.

Car ParkingUnless stated, only public on-street parking is provided. Where possible we have given information regarding proximity of designated accessible car parks to each eatery listed in this guide.

Important information before using this guide

Food OrderingIdentification of an accessible serving counter does not guarantee that the serving counter complies with the Australian Standards 1428. It indicates only that the service counter has some elements of access for a person in a wheelchair as identified by the eatery themselves. Potential customers should check with the individual eatery to obtain further details if required. LightingThe description of lighting in the premises is based on the eatery’s judgement. No lighting level assessments were taken to check compliance with the relevant standards. Potential customers should check with the individual eatery to obtain further details if required.

RECHARGE PointThe RECHARGE scheme is about encouraging local businesses to provide a power point so customers can recharge the battery on their electric wheel-chair or scooter, if required.A RECHARGE Point is a designated accessible power point that is provided to members of the community to recharge their battery operated mobility aids.To find a listing of RECHARGE Points in the Glenelg Shire log onto www.rechargescheme.org.au

The State-wide Disabled Persons Parking Permit Scheme provides a number of parking concessions based on the applicant’s need for assistance.

If you are a permanent resident of the Glenelg Shire and have a disability, you may be eligible for a disabled persons parking permit.

For further information, contact the Glenelg Shire Council on:

Under category one, permit holders with significant intellectual or ambulatory disabilities, who meet the eligibility criteria, are entitled to park a vehicle in a special bay reserved for people with a disability only, for the specified time only, or may park a vehicle in any ordinary area or bay for twice the specified time (upon payment of any initial parking fee, if applicable)

Under category two, permit holders who require rest breaks when walking may park a vehicle in any ordinary area or bay for twice the specified time (upon payment of any initial parking fee, if applicable). The permit label should be carried by the permit holder when he/she is not being transported in a vehicle. Permits must not be left on display when the vehicle is not engaged in the process of transporting a permit holder.

Note: Category two permit holders are not permitted to park in special disabled persons parking bays.

Application forms are available from the Glenelg Shire Council Customer Service Centre or by downloading from the website www.glenelg.vic.gov.au

Only permanent residents of the Glenelg Shire are eligible for a permit and the application form must be endorsed by a local medical practitioner or a clinical psychologist.
