Highlights of the March Meeting
Mark Steele welcomed meeting attendees. John Lester led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Mark welcomed several new members in attend-ance and reminds all that the Spring Picnic is April 10. Frank Holman asked for volunteers for the Scholarship Committee.
Our featured speaker was Michael Barnard, Glendale native and Producing Artistic Director of the Phoenix Theater Company.
Established in 1920 as the ‘Phoenix Players’, Margret Bartlett Heard became the president of the ‘Phoenix Little Theater’ and her coach house was the location in 1923. In continuous operation since its beginning, the now named “Phoenix Theater’ is the 6
th oldest continuing operating
theater in the United Sates.
In 1951 Margret Heard left land to the City of Phoenix for a 100 year lease for the theater. This land is now also the site for the Phoenix Art Mu-seum and the Phoenix Library. During its exist-ence, the Shadegg, Herberger and Goldwater were all connected with, and played major roles in, the theater’s success.
In 1936, Clare Booth Luce premiered the play ‘The Women’ at the theater. During WWII, The theater operated as a venue for USO productions. L. Ron Hubbard in the 1950’s rented the theater

and gave his 1st speech on Scientology. Ste-
ven Spielberg began his career at the Phoe-nix Theater building props. At age 17 in 1964, the Theater was the site of the first ev-er showing of a Spielberg film.
In the late 1980s the now named ‘Phoenix Theater Company’ joined Actors Equity, al-lowing the Company to produce their own work. Of note: all the shops required to pro-duce presentations are housed in the same building as the three stages seating 380, 210 and 100 respectively.
Since its inception nearly 100 years ago, the Phoenix Theater has hosted 1030 produc-tions. The Theater produces 10 or 11 shows yearly. It is now the developer of new works. On April 3 on the main stage, Phoe-nix Theater Company will be hosting the world premier of “Sisters in Law”, a play based on Linda Hirshman's book about the relationship between polar opposites and modern-day legends, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sandra Day O’Connor.
Phoenix Theater Company is located at 1825 N Central Avenue, Phoenix and also hosts an Art Bar and Bistro on the site.
The 50/50 drawings were won by Volker Otto and Bob Rencenberger.
A lady goes to the bar on a cruise ship and
orders a Scotch with two drops of water. As
the bartender gives her the drink she says,
'I'm on this cruise to celebrate my 80th
birthday and it's today.'

birthday, I'll buy you a drink. In fact, this
one is on me.' As the woman finishes her drink, the woman to her right says, 'I would
like to buy you a drink, too.'

President’s Column
It was good to see many of you at the March meeting and we enjoyed hearing Michael Barnard from the Phoenix Theatre Company give a presentation on the history of the theatre and the shows that are coming up next season. Excellent presentation! Next month we will be hearing from Lori Murphy with Guide Dogs of the Desert. She will be bringing a guide dog with her and will be bring information about her organization and the dogs they train. It should be informative and I look forward to seeing you there. If you have a subject you would like presented at the monthly meeting please let a board member know.
Your Board continues to work on the future of the club. The club elections have been postponed to the May meeting. We have a vacancy on the club Board and we need a Treasurer and a Presi-dent. We need to have people willing to serve on the club Board and these officer positions or we will not be able to continue as a club. Please contact me or a Board member if you know some-one that might be willing to serve or if you yourself would be willing. Please give serious consid-eration to stepping up and helping the club. Your Board meets at 11:15 AM the first Wednesday of each month at the Scottsdale Senior Center in room 10 and everyone is welcome to come and see what your Board does. You don’t have to make an extra trip, one trip and you can attend both the Board meeting and the monthly Club meeting.
A very big benefit of being a club member is the ability for your family members to receive a scholarship to one of the three Arizona state universities from the Honeywell Retirees Club Schol-arship Foundation. The Foundation is in need of people to serve on the Foundation Board. Without sufficient Board members the Foundation can not continue. If you would be interested in finding out the responsibilities of the members and serving on the Foundation Board please con-tact me or Frank Holman.
Don’t forget our annual Spring Potluck Picnic! It will be held on Wednesday, April 10th
, at the McCormick-Stillman Train Park in Scottsdale. It is on the corner of Scottsdale Rd. and Indian Bend Rd. The club will be furnishing hamburgers and hot dogs and the attendees will provide the side dishes. Please contact Diane Bennett to let her know if you will attend and what you want to bring. If you can’t bring something still call her so we know how many to plan for and come an-yway. More information is in this newsletter. It is shaping up to have a good turnout and I am sure we will all have had a good time.
I encourage you to attend the club meetings on the first Wednesday of each month at the Scotts-
dale Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Rd., Scottsdale. I hope to see many of you at our April
meeting! Mark Steele, President
New Honeywell Corporate policy will no longer provide the Club with lists of new retirees or deceased employees. We need all Club Members to inform us if you know of a new retiree or the passing of a for-mer employee.
Scholarship Committee Crisis
Gwen Sheets, Dawn Orgill and Jim Redmond will all be departing the committee this year
for a variety of reasons. Bob Davenport is tentative because of health issues with his
spouse. That leaves just Frank Holman potentially on the committee. The committee is
committed to completing the applications for 2018-2019 scholarships but will not be
available for the 2019-2020 school year.
Volunteers are critically needed. The work is not particularly time consuming except for
the job that Gwen has done which is the most time consuming........she is the Diane Ben-
nett equivalent on the Scholarship Committee.

Once again the popularity of the scholarship program has increased this year. A total of 12 applicants have received awards ranging from $1,100 to $1,200. Thank you to the Garrett and Honeywell Retiree clubs as well as Honeywell International for their generous donations. The majority of the yearly total available funds come from contributions by individual mem-bers of the Garrett and Honeywell Retiree clubs. All of you who gave are making a differ-ence in the lives of these deserving recipients.
Cost of a college education has been increasing yearly and our number of valid applicants has increased from 1 at program start to 12 for this year. So far, we have been able to award each of the qualified applicants with at least $1,000. Continued awards of this modest amount for each applicant will likely be impossible unless we can increase contributions. Please review your charitable contributions and seriously consider adding this Scholarship Program to your list of worthy causes. The Scholarship Program is qualified as a 501(c)(3), so donations should be tax deductible (check with your tax advisor). Please remember, students receiving these benefits are all family members of retired Honeywell and Garrett employees. By giving to this program, you will be directly helping the friends and family members of people you worked with for years.
Congratulations to this year’s award recipients:

New Events Process
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and asked his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car.
His father said he'd make a deal with his son, "You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a little and get your hair cut. Then we'll talk about the car"
The boy thought about that for a moment, decided he'd settle for the offer and they agreed on it.
After about six weeks his father said, "Son, you've brought your grades up and I've observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I'm disappointed you haven't had your hair cut."
The boy said, "You know, Dad, I've been thinking about that, and I've noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair,
John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair, and there's even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair."
Dad relied, "Did you also notice that they all walked everywhere they went?"

Sitting by the window of her convent, Sister Barbara opened a letter from home one evening. In-side the letter was a $100 bill her parents had sent. Sister Barbara smiled at the gesture.
As she read the letter by the window, she noticed a shabbily dressed stranger leaning against the lamp post below. Quickly, she wrote, "Don't despair. - Sister Barbara," on a piece of paper, wrapped the $100 bill in it, got the man's attention and tossed it out the window to him.
The stranger picked it up, and with a puzzled expression and a tip of his hat, went off down the street.
The next day, Sister Barbara was told that a man was at her door, insisting on seeing her. She went down, and found the stranger waiting. Without a word, he handed her a huge wad of $100 bills.
"What's this?" she asked..
"That's the $8,000 you have coming Sister," he replied. "Don't Despair paid 80-to-1."
