Support for State Schools’ Relief Thank you very much to the GPA parent helpers who have volunteered to help make and serve a Pasta lunch on Friday 25th August. All money raised will go to the State Schools’ Relief, who provide uniforms for Victorian school children, including children from Glen Huntly Primary.

NAPLAN 2017 National Assessment Program If you are the parent of a student in Years 3 or 5, you will have received an individual report of your child’s results for the tests they sat in May. These tests in key areas of literacy and numeracy provide parents and educators with a snapshot of how students are progressing- individually, as part of our school community and nationally. The national standards are the standards that have been agreed upon by all state and territory governments.

At GHPS we will be using the results to celebrate success, inform our planning and address areas requiring improvement by incorporating future goals into student’s Individual Learning Improvement Plans and across the school. Your child’s teacher should be your first point of contact for any concerns you might have about your child’s results. Further information and analysis about whole school achievement will be reported to the community at School Council and in the coming newsletters.

Parent Opinion Survey A friendly reminder for parents who have been randomly selected form our Cases21 program to participate in the Parent Opinion Survey that the survey will be open until Sunday 27th August. Thank you to those who may have already had the opportunity to complete the survey.

School Council Report Thank you very much to Craig Matthews for writing a report about the August meeting.

School Council Report School Council met for the 1st time in term 3 on Monday the 7th of August.

Key items presented and discussed were;

Prep numbers for 2018 are already looking very healthy with 32 current enrolments. School tours continue apace which should see these numbers steadily climb in the coming months.

Preparations for cabaret continue for the 4th of September night of nights – this is one of the highlights of the school calendar.

The date for the school social fun night has been set for Saturday 9th of September. So book the babysitter as we look forward to seeing all of our parents and friends at this event in what promises to be an entertaining night for all. Further details to come as these are finalised.

The fete organising committee continues to do a marvellous job with fete co-ordinator Fiona Davey providing Council with a detailed update on planned activities/entertainment etc. A significant factor in the fete’s success is ensuring our whole school community pitches in on the day to ensure all of our fete attractions deliver a fabulous experience for fete visitors. Roster details for stalls will be coming out soon so please be sure to put your family down for 1 (or more) stalls.

Finance approved the installation of new external lighting on the East Site that will provide illumination to the asphalt area, playground and shelter shed. This will provide significant long term benefits to the school for events such as the green evening/art show, fete etc. as well as safety and security.

New Chromebooks have been leased and will be out into the student community in the next couple of weeks. The ultimate aim of the school is to have a ratio of 1 device per student and this will only be made possible by the ongoing commitment from families to the Digital & Learning Technology levy included in the school fees.

Curriculum & Policy presented 3 key policies for final review and ratification; School Uniform; Staff Leave; and Duty of Care & Supervision.

There was significant discussion surrounding the School Uniform policy as this is an integral part of the GHPS identity. In the coming weeks there will be some clear communication to the school community about the correct uniform, why it is so important that we have all students of GHPS adhere to it and suggestions on how this can be achieved.

Publicity & Marketing has had a key focus on preparing advertising and promotional materials for the fete. Fete poster, banner and flyer

artwork have all been created together with a dedicated Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/GHPSTwilightFete/ - please be sure to share this with as many people as you can over the coming months.

Further to our last meeting back in June, a trial of an online only newsletter format will take place in term 4 with the view to rolling this out fully in 2018. This is an integral part of the school’s green credentials as it looks to move away from paper based communication wherever practical.

Buildings & Grounds is looking at all possible options for the improvement of the East Site oval area, including a potential new car parking area located near the Lyons Street gate. Discussions with Glen Eira Council regarding their re-development plans for Lords Reserve may present some opportunities for GHPS to benefit.

Capital Works 2017 is currently out to tender with the plan remaining to commence works late term 3.

If there is any issue any member of the school community would like to raise with School Council, please email [email protected] Craig Matthews School Council President

Term 3 Working Bee Last Sunday the Term 3 Working Bee took place and once we again we had very favourable weather conditions and an excellent turn out of participants, with at least forty workers who had signed in. The following jobs were accomplished: Improving our Biodiversity rating by: increasing

understorey plants, removing non-native plants (within reason), increasing organic litter in the school grounds, improving soil management in some areas.

Removing/cutting down dangerous or low hanging branches/tree sections/trees

Beautifying and tidying up all gardens and grounds areas on the West site

Spreading mulch on garden beds and on driveway on West site carpark

Raking and relocating existing soft fall under playground equipment to provide a safe even coverage

Weeding and pruning gardens and plants Plant pruning in the Indigenous garden, East site Oil paint four sided seats on East site Trimming trees and foliage above water tanks on

East site and cleaning the tank filters

Plinth work on West site and East site Grange road fences – all plinths that require replacement will be fitted with new wood.

I am sure you will agree that this is an extensive list of work. The achievements of the plinth crew, photographed under our school banner on the West site, deserve special mention and was very impressive. This was a difficult and arduous task with many assisting with this heavy muscle driven labor. The final result looks fantastic and is much safer as well. Thank you to Andrew Kringas and James Blair for your preparation, planning and advice prior to the work. This was also greatly appreciated.

Thank you to the team that spread the mulch on the complete length of the West site staff car park driveway. This area now looks more attractive and will now be drier and safer.

Thank you to the following people who contributed to the Working Bee and signed on in the book and job sheets: Paul and Kane Butler; Sasi Kumar Ethiraj, Venmani Raghaven, Smruthi Sasi Kumar and Shruthi Sasi Kumar; Ross and Amber Donnan; Andrew, Harper and Dakota Kringas; Carl, Lena and Ruby Wilson; Adam and Lucas McKay; Adi, Eden and Perry Weiss; Ben and Evan Shields; Stewart and Isabella Gardiner; James and Caitlin Blair; Debbie Field, Clara and Genevieve Fitzpatrick; Daniel and Kieran Wolfe and Julie Tran; Roxy, Nick, Archer and Clancy Conquest; Shan, Alice and Emily Jayaweera; Yashvi and Kishor Oswal; Jillian Williams and Joshua Davidson. Apologies to anyone who came to the working bee that I haven’t thanked here.

Once again, many many thanks to Yvonne Balfour for your fantastic catering and work in the kitchen with your support team. Special mention here for the delicious ginger cake made by Yvonne and for Lucy Balfour’s very tasty butter cake, both cakes baked especially for the day. Our new barbeque was also given its first work out for the Working Bee. Thank you to Archer Conquest and Alice Jayaweera for assisting me to assemble the new barbeque.

The next BAGS meeting will be Wednesday 11th October and the next Working Bee will be on Sunday 15th October, focusing on the East site in preparation for our twilight fete on Saturday 28th October. All are most welcome to attend our BAGS meeting (held in the East staffroom, commencing at 6:30pm) and your participation in the Term IV Working Bee is also highly encouraged. Techspert Academy The Digital Learning team are very excited to announce that we are running a new program called the “Techspert Academy” in Terms 3 and 4.

After attending the DigiCon17 Conference to learn about how we can integrate digital technologies into our everyday learning, we decided that we would like focus on students learning about coding and teaching their peers. Three students from each class will be selected based on a self-assessment using the following criteria:

Presentation skills

Interest in coding Team work skills Listening to and responding to feedback Responsible for their learning

Students will be participating in lunchtime session where they will learn how to use the program Scratch. They will then work with Mr Jacobs and I to create a presentation for their classmates so that they can also learn how to use Scratch. This will be the first group of students that will have the opportunity to be a part of the Techspert Academy with scope to expand this to other areas of Digital Learning.

We look forward to seeing how our students are able to apply themselves during these sessions and whilst teaching their peers! Miss Claire Piscioneri
