WOMEN’S MONTH

Page #

Mrs A.Katsande

Newsletter: August 2018

In South Africa, 9 August is Women's Day and the month of August is National Women's Month. This is an opportunity to celebrate women's achievements and the important role that women of all races and religions have played and continue to play in South African society.

On 9 August 1956, more than 20 000 women from all walks of life united in a mass demonstration to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. They protested against the unjust pass laws enforced on women in South Africa. The women were led by Lilian Ngoyi - a trade unionist and political activist, Helen Joseph, Albertina Sisulu, and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn.

In remembrance of what South African women achieved on that day, 9 August has been declared as National Women's Day and is a public holiday in South Africa. Women's month is an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on women's achievements, as well as the problems they have faced in the struggle to be free and the important role they continue to play in society. Apart from their traditional roles as mothers, wives and caregivers, statistics show that women are making great progress in business, politics, academic and economic careers with more and more women reaching top positions.

Government is committed to empowering women and helping them to reach their highest potential. For example, the South African Women Entrepreneurs Network (SAWEN) is an initiative of the Department of Trade and Industry. It is a networking forum committed to advancing women in business.

Land service Activities August 2018

MS k. Anilkumar

As part of the land service club, the learners together with Ms. Anilkumar have created their very own vegetable garden at the school. The learners have worked tirelessly in order to clear out a space and make the area neat and tidy. The learners have planted a variety of seeds which include cabbage, onions, pumpkin, spinach, green beans and tomato plants. As this activity is new to many in the group, we have spent much time planning and preparing for the start of such a garden. The land service group will welcome any advice or suggestions from any person that is interested in assisting.

SENIOR PHASE TRIP

Page #

Mr F. Moyo

SENIOR PHASE TRIP TO THE SASOL-EXPO IN SASOLBURG-FREE STATE PROVINCE Road trips mean adventure time for the young at heart. The possibility of new scenery and roads never traversed leads to itchy feet and raucous voices- our Grade 9s and the three Grade 8s that travelled were no exception to that norm. They sang and danced to their hearts’ desire. Who would blame them? First excursion of the year was upon them. They truly were a jolly bunch and wore the colours of Glen Austin High with pride. For most of our learners this sojourn presented an opportunity to see one of the biggest factories in South Africa. The firm loomed large and our students were in awe of its length. This visible structure blazed with flames atop its sheer mass. The venue of the Expo lay opposite this colossal structure.

AT THE VENUE Our learners battled the winds that threatened to render them blind as they patiently waited to get into the venue. Thousands upon thousands of students some of the as far as the North West flocked to learn a lot about opportunities in different sectors of the South African economy. There were different exhibitors inside the venue but due to volumes and time constraints, the learners could not go to them all. The most popular venue proved to be the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA)-prizes were on offer for all learners. The Rand Water stand also proved to be a hit more-so for the boys as they got to meet up with popular Premier Soccer League (PSL) match official, Victor Hlongwane, who works for this important institution in our beloved land.

LEARNER CONDUCT. Our students’ behaviour was exceptional both inside and outside the venue. They looked spick and span in their uniforms and other students and teachers could not help but ask about our school. They truly carried our flag high. Every learner who travelled with us deserves another trip. They were, truly, a good spot. Heading back was sobering for them. All the wind was gone from their sails and they could not help but quietly contemplate their next expedition.

Thank you to the parents who afforded our future diamonds this opportunity to explore the possibilities that exist out yonder. Until our feet itch again… GOODBYE

GLEN AUSTIN’S GOT TALENT SHOW

Page #

Mr L Mukhabele

When I say Glen Austin’s got talent, I do mean Glen Austin’s got talent. I can’t even begin to express the emotions that I felt when I was watching the learners perform during the show. It was so overwhelming to see all the magic happening on stage. From singers, with angelic voices that blew our minds away, to dancers with moves so smooth that you’d think Michael Jackson was their personal choreographer, to rappers with flow so sick you’d actually catch a cold, to poets who made our heart strings dance a little.

A big thank you to each and every one who contributed to making this event a success. To the learners, thank you for your dedication and being brave enough to showcase your talent. Thank you to the educators, as well as the great audience we had.

The talent show was followed by a pre-spring dance to allow learners to unwind and have a good time. Both these shows were for fund raising purposes for the Matric dance, so thank you so much to everyone who bought tickets and supported the school.

BULLYING ARTICLE

Glen Austin High - Anti-Bullying Policy

Bullying is aggressive behavior arising from a deliberate intent to cause physical or psychological distress to others.

The School’s Stand on Bullying

Glen Austin High School has a reputation for being a friendly and spirited school. Against this framework the school is committed to taking all reasonable steps necessary for

minimizing all forms of harassment. It needs all in the school community to work together to ensure that everyone feels safe and ‘at home’

in the school. Teachers and senior pupils have to work actively at being role models. The school regards bullying as one of the highest levels of offence in terms of its Code of Conduct

and will respond to all proven incidents of bullying on the basis of ‘zero tolerance’.

Specific Actions to Underpin the School’s Stand on Bullying

The school has systems of pastoral care and reporting which will react immediately when bullying is reported.

Not only will the school support victims of bullying, but will also provide education and remedial support for the bully/perpetrator in order to prevent recurrences of incidents of bullying.

Such support will be additional to, and not instead of, punitive action where such action is warranted. The school will constantly review its values and responses in this regard, and also its attitude to what

constitutes bullying.

Failure to abide by this Policy, as with other Policies at Glen Austin High School, may result in disciplinary action as described in the school’s Code of Conduct and School Rules.

GAVIN’S CORNER

August Antics and Fun Times by Gavin

Happy Women’s month to all especially to all the females that bless this world with their existence. This month we appreciate the strength, perseverance and sheer beauty of women in South Africa. Let’s face gentlemen, pride aside, we wouldn’t be the men we are today if we did not have women and so we honor you Women, may you feel loved, may you feel treasured and may you be eternally blessed.

What a month it has been for Glen Austin High School. The marquee highlight of this just had to be the diversified Talent show. We went to America, we heard Beyoncé and Sam Smith, jammed to Kendrick Lamar and had an overdose of soul filled voices. Inevitably we returned to the shores of Mzansi, were greeted with energetic Gqom dance performances, we witnessed the “vosho” in all its glory. The roof of the hall should’ve came down because the level of elation in that room was resoundingly overwhelming. To say that the talent show was a success would be an enormous understatement, it was the epitome of brilliance. It warmed my heart to see so much raw talent, the students showed true character despite the technical hiccups. Praises be to Mr. L Mukhabele for orchestrating and overseeing this event. His stress was well justified. Next year is going to be even more prolific, this was just a taste, so I urge all the parents to please come and support these driven students.

Another awesome event was the trip to Sasolburg. The aim of the excursion was to assist the learners on gaining clarity over their futures, regarding subject choices, universities and admission score points. Most of the school were showing eagerness, therefore the school decided to organize two trips and from the looks of it, the learners definitely had an interesting time.

I also want to urge the educators and SMT to take time and listen to what the students have to say. Talking to some of the learners, they seem to have bright ideas that would really make the school efficient and even more enjoyable. The best schools today rely on the feedback they get from learners and this subsequently allows them to improve and it brings about an air of peace and happiness within the respective institutions. So let us work together as Glen Austin High School because one of the core philosophies of the school is that we are a family and a family despite their differences work together as a unit. The Matriculants have begun their preliminary exams and always we wish the best. We have faith that they will replicate the 100% pass rate achieved by their predecessors. Keep pushing guys, we have a steadfast faith in your success.

Overall it has been a good month and September has got events that will surely knock our socks off. I for one am drooling with anticipation for what is to be a good month indeed.

THE JOY OF WRITING

Teens love to communicate, and writing is an essential means of communication in everyday life. It is a way of sharing their feelings and the power of the imagination with others. Joseph Conrad, the novelist, expressed his attitude to writing about his own ideas in these words: ‘My task which I am trying to achieve is, by the power of the written words, to make you hear, feel and to make you see.’

In my life time, the ‘power of the written word’ has served me well – both personally and professionally – from receiving imported equine medication from Germany for my horse’s arthritis (at no cost) to having traffic lights installed at a busy intersection by the local municipality. Such functional writing is what is termed ‘transactional writing’, in which students consider purpose and audience thereby determining the content, register and style of the written piece.

But don’t underestimate teens’ penchant for essay writing (in particular, reflective essays), as this gives them the opportunity of using their imaginations and expressing their creative flair. This was most evident in the theme of ‘story-telling’ that the Grade 11s were recently taught – how to tell and write a good narrative essay using the short story components:

Short introduction (exposition)Development (Rapid Story Development)Rising ActionClimaxFalling Action

HOD MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE

Page # Newsletter: August 2018

PHYSICAL SCIENCE: MR. V.T SIBANDA

Glen Austin High School (GAHS) kindly requests all parents to show an ardent interest in the subjects taken by their children as these subjects will have a bearing on the career path that the learner chooses post Grade 12 level.

At the end of term 3, the school will engage with parents on matters concerning subjects that learners have chosen for Grade 10.

Specifically, for Grade 9s, the SAT (School Assessment Team) will sit down with parents and advise on choice of subjects for Grade 10, 2019. The SAT expects parents to work closely with GAHS to ensure proper subject choices are made by learners so that there are no disturbances of subject changes in the future. At this stage the choice of subjects made will be provisional pending the outcome of results in Term 4 as dictated by the subject change policy. For a learner to do Mathematics in Grade 10, he/she must get at least 50% at the end of the year in Grade 9 Mathematics according to section 3.5 in the subject change policy. A learner can only take Physical Sciences if their Natural Sciences mark at the end of Grade 9 is at least 50% as well. For a learner to continue doing these subjects throughout their Matric course (Gr 10 – 12), it is important to maintain a score that is above 50% in Mathematics and Physical Sciences.

For the current Grade 10s and 11s, it is a pre requisite for the learners to score a minimum of 50% as per subject, if the performance drops below 50%, it is of paramount importance for the parent to provide proof of extra tutorials for the learner on top of what the school is trying. Failure to comply will then imply that the school will use its discretion to intervene on behalf of the learner by imposing a subject change accordingly. No subject changes are done at Grade 12 level as per subject change policy. In exceptional cases, a learner may change one additional subject in Grade 11, after the release of the final end of year results (before 09 December of each year) in Grade 11.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE: MR. V.T SIBANDA

From the beginning of Term 3, 2018 GAHS took a new stance on handling the national problem on Mathematics. The school has made its policy to administer weekly tests from Grade 8 to Grade 12.

This is in the hope of establishing a culture of practicing Mathematics continuously amongst our learners so that we benchmark our Mathematics performance against the best.

In all the efforts we are making, we urge parents to work in conjunction with the school and supervise the learners’ revision of these tests. The tests are uploaded on a weekly basis onto D6 together with the memos. If a parent has engaged a tutor to assist, kindly ask the tutor to make reference to these tests.
