Management

For those truly bent on ruining their degree, there is a need for a close-knit number of peo-ple with a real drive to make an excellent media outlet. As a manager you will lead a team of editors, and work with the other managers to make decisions in the manner of a steering com-mittee. You should have a good head for delegating tasks, help-ing others meet deadlines and resolving (sometimes politically charged) problems that the pa-per will face in the course of its operations. These are fantastic opportunities to get involved in steering the direction of the organisation, involving a sig-nificant commitment. All candi-dates will be interviewed before taking up a post.

Web EditorResponsible for making sure all the articles that are written are put on glasgowguardian.co.uk. This may involve a wee bit of training writers themselves to use Wordpress properly, but you’re also free to play with the layout of articles on the website. There is just as much scope for innovative layout here as there is in the print edition.

Photo Editor Handling the photographers’ mailing list, making sure every-one knows what shots are need-ed for the print issue. It’ll help if you have a good understanding of what makes a cracking shot.

Print Layout Team (x3)Procedurally the paper is split into distinct, independently worked-upon InDesign files that mashed together form the print edition. With one layout sub-editor assigned to each of the three distinct sections (news&views, culture, sport) you will be in charge of making sure all the content in one of the sections has been subbed (checked for errors) and laid out according to the visual style guide. We can provide training, so this position requires only

basic IT ability and a willingness to work in a deadline-pressed newsroom for a few days lead-ing up to going to print.

CSS Guru / Web DesignerThe web these days is a con-stantly evolving mishmash of technologies, and a lot of things are done on social media. But at the heart of our operation is the website which needs to evolve to accommodate new tasks, of-ten at short notice. Our website has run Wordpress for years, so unless you’re up for a big techy challenge and a data migration nightmare, then some familiar-ity with the back-end of Word-press is necessary.

SEO / Social Media Officer How many SEO experts does it take to change a light bulb, light-bulb, light, bulb, lamp, light-ing, switch, sex, xxx, hardcore? Few people reach our content by typing in the URL, reading the navigation bar and clicking through to an article they are interested in. Feedback like this garnered from Google Analytics can help us shape the content and the way it is presented to make it have even more reach. If you spend 20+ hours a day on-line, this is for you.
