Patrons greet Bill like royalty. Peg hangs on his arm, smiles for friends and fans. She tries to lead him pastthe crowd but fails. Every few steps a new conversationbegins. She forces the smile and tolerates theinconvenience, even hugs a familiar face.

PEGHow you doing? Its been forever.

A young woman waves from a table near the stage. Pegwaves back, throws her arms up in comic frustration thenpoints to Bill who rambles. Peg tugs, half-insists.

AT THE BOOTH Peg readies her camera, leans to Bill.

PEGYou havent heard them, but thebass player has great control.Wait til you hear his two-handtap.

Bill studies the band like he interprets an impressionistpainting. His head bobs gentle in contrast to the hardbeat.

woman in the place and every manon that stage.
