Gladstone Good News January 2013

Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Gladstone News. My
name is Tim Dunnagan and my wife’s name is Jan. I have relocated from
Las Vegas to Gladstone. I moved to Gladstone for a couple of reasons.
First, I was ready for a new life experience, small town versus the large
town of Las Vegas. Boy is it different, but so is seeing the stars at night
and the quiet; except for the occasional train blast (thanks Kevin
Booke). Wildlife is all around and there are four seasons…I have met
some of the most wonderful people in such a short time…and finally I
moved to Gladstone so that I can build homes.…The reason I decided to
start the Gladstone News is WHY NOT!….so I hope you enjoy the
Gladstone News. Website: GladstoneNorthDakota.com
The Gladstone News is a newsletter that is about the Past, Present, and Future of Gladstone North
Dakota. Within this framework I will shed a positive light on everything that comes across my path….for example
random acts of kindness will end up in the Gladstone News….because I think we deserve it . Every issue will have a
conversation with a Gladstonian on a variety of topics. A “what is it” Photo will be in every issue as well. Quotes
from William E. Gladstone our towns’ namesake, along with others will be entered. Landscape design and ideas are
also going to have a section in the Gladstone News thanks to Michael Hill (and yours truly) who will also be moving
to Gladstone in the very near future.
Photos about all kinds of things will end up here…The photo below depicts new residents moving to
Gladstone in the 1890s. Many are relatives of present day Gladstonians. These folks in the photograph embodied
courage, ambition and a desire to make their lives better and their children’s lives better. They accomplished
that!…They came here with a dream….I have come here with a dream and so have Tyler Mason, Michael Hill and
all of the other new arrivals that will call Gladstone Home…..just like the folks in the photograph, we too have a
powerful dream.

Party Time has arrived. I saw these guys on Halloween at
the Enchanted Bar…I think it’s great that they went all out on
their creative costumes….They look great and they were having
such a good time… Next year I plan on joining in……after our
three party goers friends here left, several more stopped in with
some really good costumes….next year I’ll get the photos for
sure….Thanks for being out there…Josh, Dusty & Jackie
The Gladstone Depot….I want to thank Larry Praus, Gene Torstenson and Tom
Torstenson for making The Depot available to restore and bring back to life…Thank you guys….It
is very exciting that the depot will have memorabilia and history of Gladstone. Gladstone’s
history is being lost every day. I believe that communities must be forward thinking and grow,
but respect the past if they want to be relevant tomorrow. The Gladstone Depot will need a
considerable amount of work. It’s the journey that’s the most difficult and the most rewarding.
I’m looking for items that will go into the Depot; maybe you have something like a photo or an
old uniform, maybe a piece of Gladstone history, just let me know.

“What is it” The photo on the left side is easily
identifiable in the Gladstone city limits. Some
identification s will be hard and some are very
easy. In the back pages of the Gladstone News
we will have the answers. Have fun with these.
“Find the difference”
These two photos have
five things that are
different. If you can’t
find the differences,
look on the back pages
for the answers.
Gladstone Homes is the
proud sponsor of Kendall
Booke. He is a great driver
and is going to be tough to
beat next season. Gladstone
news will keep you informed
on how he does next year.

In this issue we are meeting Emil
Wieglenda. He pronounces his name as if
it was written Amil. I found out that his
grandfather changed his name from Amil
to Emil when he came to America. So that
is why our Emil kept the pronunciation of
his grandfathers name Amil. I also found
out some other interesting things from
Emil. He can tell by the sound of a train’s
horn if the weather is going to change. He
said that a change in the barometric
pressure changes the sound from the
train’s horn. Now I don’t claim to
understand all the things that Emil was
explaining to me, but I think he is really an
astute person.
Emil took care of the signals for the
railroad for 40 years of his life. I think that
the railroad big shots should have been at
his retirement party and thanked Emil and
their lucky stars that they had Emil
maintaining the signals for them. He
explained to me that the signals for trains
are the air traffic controllers for the rails. Unlike the air traffic controllers in their
comfortable climate controlled towers, Emil had to battle the elements. Blazing
hot weather or freezing temperatures caused problems for the signals. Without
these signals the chance for an accident was significant. Of course, the problems
might even happen at 1 o clock in the morning under the worst of conditions,

but Emil always got out of
his comfortable warm bed
to make potentially
lifesaving repairs to the all
important Signal system.
The thought that 700
people on any train could
have their lives put in
jeopardy from a systems
failure was never far from
his mind.
Emil was telling me that he was a really lucky person. But I heard stories
about his military days, and being assigned to the California desert with blazing
heat during the day and freezing temperatures at night. He endured dust storms
that embedded sand in every pore of his body; if that wasn’t lucky enough, when
he was discharged from the Marines he decided to take care of the Railroad
signals for 40 years. Emil are you sure you are Lucky?
Short wave radio is something Emil really enjoys. Since 1984 he has
participated as an Amateur radio operator. Shortwave radio is used for
broadcasting long distance communication to ships and aircraft, or to remote
areas out of reach from other types of communication. Believe it or not our cell
phones can be pretty limited at times, sometimes those can be times of an
emergency. Meeting other shortwave operators is also what makes shortwave
fun, by putting a face to the voice after many years of communication with one
another.
Finally I want to thank Emil for his time and stories. I’m very thankful for
guys like Emil; the man takes such great pride in his work. Unless something went
wrong you would never know about Emil Wieglenda, but you do now. He did a
very important job that demanded his full attention with no excuses. Emil plans
on helping with some of the details on the remodeled Gladstone Depot. His help
will be greatly appreciated. That’s awesome Emil…Thank You.

I saw these garden sculptures and
think they are incredible. I’m not saying that
these exact ones should go in your garden,
these are one of a kind, but I do believe that
they are awe inspiring for design or garden
art in a yard. I’m so amazed at these pieces
that I might just find out if they can be
made.
This sculpture in a garden would be fantastic. I love all the
detail on him. We have many different varieties of shrubs that
would work well this figure. The key to using art in a garden is to
make the setting seem as natural as possible. Use plants that do
not get to big. Usually the use of dwarf plants work best with art. It
is important to always remember scale when working with items
like these in your garden.
I have designed living spaces for over 30 years. If you want a design
that is different or creative, give me a call. I have always thought that your
living environment should be a place that makes you feel good. I can help
you with landscape, interior design or anything that you might think of.

This is the garden section of the Gladstone News. I
thought it would be appropriate to talk about garden art
this time of year. The great thing about that is that we can
plan for this when the weather is cold and windy. I have
used many things over the past 30 years that have made a
garden come to life by using art in the landscape. Now
these great rabbits can be displayed in many different
settings, not just water. Maybe he fell into a rabbit hole
and got stuck. Put them on the steps leading to the front
door…many ideas come to mind.
These metal fish are fantastic. There are
many different types of grasses that grow well in
Gladstone that could be used to create this look. I
find that a bit of whimsy is important in a landscape.
The reaction to yard art is much different than the
reaction to plants and flowers. Plus, the yard art is
much easier to maintain. I plan on doing many of
these types of settings in my own yard here in
Gladstone. It is my hope that this might inspire you
to be creative in your yard. Simple items can make a
strong impact in a garden. I have designed many
spaces over the last thirty years. Simplicity appeals
to most people most of the time.
This is a yard that
I did many years ago. It
shows really well how an
art piece can change an
entire space. This was also
turned into a fountain, but
the statue by itself is also
good. All the items here
can be made in concrete or
metal. Each issue will have
a different subject.

This is the Mason house.
Tyler Mason and his family will be
living here. Their company names is
Bp Construction and is a family
owned business. They are one of
the hardest working families you
will meet. This is a great house and
will be a great addition to the
property in town. The big comment
I have heard is, well how is he going
to get out of that driveway? Tyler is
a very smart guy. The drive will be heated and the grade will be less severe than it is right now.
The family will be moving in their beautiful home this month. Landscape and drive will be
completed in the spring. Congratulations to the Mason family.
Some fun lights seen around town
