Zeitreisen durch die Schweizer Alpen
Mutige Visionäre aus der Bahnpionierzeit machten die
durchgehende Schmalspurbahn quer durch die Alpen mög-
lich.
funktioniert. Bauliche Massnahmen im Gebiet des UNESCO
Welterbes Rhätische Bahn Albula/Bernina verlangen beson-
technische Meisterwerk UNESCO Welterbe Rhätische Bahn;
mit der Region Schweizer Alpen Jungfrau-Aletsch streift
der Glacier Express ein zweites Welterbe-Gebiet. Die einzig-
artige Gebirgslandschaft von Eiger, Mönch und Jungfrau
beeindruckt mit dem grössten und längsten Gletscher
der Alpen, dem Aletschgletscher. Am Gornergrat, wo sich
29 Viertausender versammeln, erfahren Sie auf geführ-
ten Touren Aufregendes und Überraschendes zur alpinen
Gletscherwelt.
Time travel through the Swiss Alps
It was bold visionaries from the railway pioneering age who
made the narrow-gauge railway across the Alps possible.
Without losing sight of the future, in 2016 the Matterhorn
Gotthard Railway looks back during its 125-hour festival to ce-
lebrate 125 years of the rail connection between Zermatt and
Visp. You can take a look back at the milestones in the eventful
history of the Visp-Zermatt line on page 8.
What has been and what is to come also lie side by side at the
Albula building site. A parallel tunnel is being cut at a distance
of 30 metres alongside the Albula Tunnel, now over 110 years
old. When the Albula Tunnel II is opened in 2021, its predeces-
sor will be repurposed to a safety tunnel. Structural works in
the area of the Rhaetian Railway UNESCO World Heritage Site
require particular respect for the natural surroundings and exi-
sting structures. Turn to page 13 to find out more.
Meanwhile, St.Moritz looks forward to the Alpine Ski Champion-
ships starting in February 2017. The St.Moritz Station will be
given a facelift to be completed just in time for the races. The
renovation and extension works have been ongoing since
2014, and Glacier Express passengers are already benefiting
from the new Bernina platform with its elegant roof. You can
find out more about the station renovation works at St.Moritz
on page 19.
While enjoying the culinary treats on this journey through the
mountain landscape, you will not only experience the Rhaetian
Railway UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Albula line; the
Glacier Express also passes through the Jungfrau-Aletsch, a
second World Heritage Site. The unique mountain landscape
of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau is an impressive sight, and is
home to the longest glacier in the Alps, the Aletsch Glacier. On
the Gornergrat, where 29 peaks over 4,000 metres come tog-
ether, guided tours give you all kinds of exciting and surprising
information about the Alpine glaciers. We are pleased to present
the charming Gornergrat Guides to you on page 26.
For now, yet always looking ahead, we wish you an unforgett-
able trip on the Glacier Express!

VISP – ZERMATT
125 YEARS OF THE
VISP – ZERMATT LINE
BVZ …Entstanden war die (Brig-)Visp-
Zermatt-Bahn dank der grossen
Anziehungskraft des Matterhorns:
Nach der Erstbesteigung 1865 erfreu-
te sich der 4 478 Meter hohe Berg
und mit ihm die ganze Region einer
zunehmenden Beliebtheit. Zermatt
war damals allerdings nur zu Fuss er-
reichbar und das Bedürfnis nach ei-
ner Bahnstrecke dementsprechend
gross. So wurde 1888 mit dem Bau
der meterspurigen Visp-Zermatt-Bahn
begonnen. Drei Jahre später, am 18.
Juli 1891, konnte die 44 km lange
Gesamtstrecke von Visp nach Zermatt
eröffnet werden. Am 6. Juni 1930
schliesslich wurde der lang ersehnte
Streckenabschnitt von Visp nach Brig
eröffnet.
2016 darf die heutige Bahnbetreiberin, die
Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn mit Hauptsitz in Brig,
das 125-jährige Jubiläum der Strecke Visp –
Zermatt feiern. Die Strecke trug ganz wesentlich
zur touristischen und wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung
des Wallis bei.
In 2016 the current operator of the Visp-Zermatt line,
the Brig-based Matterhorn Gotthard Railway, will be
celebrating the railway’s 125-year anniversary. This line
has made a substantial contribution to the tourism
and economic development of Valais.

BVZ...The (Brig-)Visp-Zermatt Railway (BVZ)
came about as a result of the great re-
nown of the Matterhorn: the first ascent
of the 4,478 metre high peak in 1865
brought increasing popularity to the
mountain and the whole of its surround-
ing area. But at that time Zermatt was
only accessible on foot. With the pressing
need for a railway, work began on the
metre-gauge Visp-Zermatt line in 1888.
The 44 km route from Visp to Zermatt
was opened three years later, on 18 July
1891. The long-awaited stretch from Visp
to Brig was finally opened on 6 June
1930.

A backdrop of wild landscapes and the mighty Matterhorn. Modern trains are already in use.
Schon 1929 ersetzte die BVZ
ihre Dampflokomotiven durch
Elektro fahrzeuge. Aufgrund der
Wetterverhältnisse und fehlender
Lawinenschutzbauten gelang der
Winterbetrieb allerdings erst 1933.
Die Wirkung liess nicht lange auf sich
warten: Zermatt baute das touristi-
sche Angebot laufend aus. Den immer
höheren Passagierzahlen begegnete
die Bahn 1972 mit der Einführung
eines regelmässigen Pendelverkehrs
zwischen Täsch und Zermatt.
… + FO …Der Bau der Strecke Brig-Furka-
Disentis wurde 1911 begonnen. Seit
der Eröffnung der ersten Teilstrecke
am 6. Juni 1914 brachte die FO
(Furka Oberalp) Bahn die Entwicklung
der Bergtäler ins Rollen und hauch-
te dem Goms, dem Urseren-Tal und
dem Tujetsch Leben ein. Seit den
1920er Jahren verbindet die FO als
Schmalspurbahn Brig im Oberwallis
mit dem büdnerischen Disentis.
Zügige Dienste erbrachte sie später
dem Schweizer Militär im Zweiten
Weltkrieg: Als strategische Zubringerin
transportierte die FO Truppen und
Versorgungsgüter.
Ein erneutes «Zughoch» erlebte die
FO während der Hochkonjunktur
der Bauwirtschaft. In den 50er
und 60er Jahren beförderte sie
Tonnen an Baumaterialien zu den
Kraftwerkbaustellen im Goms, Urseren
und Tujetsch. Ihre Bedeutung hat sie
ein weiteres Mal beim Bau des Furka-
Basistunnels und bei den Arbeiten an
den Transitgasleitungen bestätigt. Mit
der Verbindung zur Zentralschweiz
und mit dem ganzjährig geöffneten
Furka-Basistunnel fuhr die FO zum
Jahresbeginn 1982 in einen «zweiten
Frühling».
… = MGBahnAuf den 1. Januar 2003 schlossen
Bahn. Die MGBahn verkehrt heute auf
den Strecken Zermatt – Brig – Disentis
und Andermatt – Göschenen. Die
Züge legen eine Strecke von rund 144
Kilometern zurück, führen durch 50
Tunnels und Galerien und über 60
Brücken.

Elegante Brücken verbinden die

Bahn Visp – Zermatt mit einer
starken «Krokodil»-Lokomotive
hindurchfährt.
Elegant bridges cross the valleys,
while the Visp – Zermatt train with a
powerful “Krokodil” locomotive runs
below.
In 1929 the BVZ had already replaced
its steam locomotives with electric trains,
but the weather conditions and a lack of
avalanche defences meant that winter
operation did not commence until 1933.
The beneficial effects were soon felt, as
Zermatt continually expanded the tourist
facilities it offered. In 1972 the railway
responded to ever-growing passenger
numbers with the introduction of a regu-
lar commuter service between Täsch and
Zermatt.
... + FO ...The construction of the Brig-Furka-
Disentis line was begun in 1911. The
opening of the first stage of the line on
6 June 1914 by the FO (Furka Oberalp)
railway (FO) triggered the development
of the mountain valleys and breathed
new life into Goms and the Urseren
and Tavetsch valleys. The narrow-gauge
FO has been connecting Brig in Upper
Valais with Disentis in Graubünden since
the 1920s. It later provided an efficient
service for the Swiss military during the
Second World War, as a strategic feeder
line transporting troops and supplies.
The FO scaled new heights during the
peak era of construction – in the 1950s
and 60s it brought tonnes of building
materials to the power station sites in
Goms, Urseren and Tavetsch. It again
proved its value during the construction
of the Furka base tunnel and the works
on the Transitgas pipelines. The FO en-
tered a “second spring” in 1982 with
the all-year-round opening of the Furka
base tunnel and connections to central
Switzerland.
… = MGBahnOn 1 January 2003 the BVZ and FO
merged to form a joint railway compa-
ny: the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway
(MGBahn). The MGBahn currently runs
on the Zermatt – Brig – Disentis and
Andermatt – Göschenen lines, with trains
covering a distance of around 144 kilo-
metres, passing through 50 tunnels and
galleries and crossing 60 bridges.

GROSSER BAHNHOF FÜR DIE ALPINE SKI-WM 2017
STATION EXTENSION
FOR THE ALPINE SKI
CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017
sportlichen Grossevent fit gemacht.
A new look for the Ski Championships – St.Moritz station is being brought
up to scratch for this major sporting event. Manfred Bertsche will be pulling
out all the stops in preparation for the arrival of the international ski stars
who will come to the slopes of Corviglia in February 2017 to compete for
gold. As project manager of the Rhaetian Railway, he is in charge of the sta-
tion renovations. Passengers of the Glacier Express can already benefit from
the facelift, Bertsche tells us in this interview.
19DESTINATION DESTINATION
Der Bahnhof von St.Moritz
ist der bestfrequentierte
der Rhätischen Bahn. Pro
Jahr steigen an dieser Drehscheibe
über eine Million Fahrgäste aus al-
ler Welt ein oder aus. Wenn vom
6. bis 19. Februar 2017 die ganze
Skiwelt nach St.Moritz blickt und
Tausende Wintersportbegeisterte
zu den Rennen auf die Corviglia pil-
gern, wird der berühmte Bahnhof den
Publikumsansturm dank erstklassiger
Infrastruktur weltmeisterlich bewälti-
gen. Mitunter dafür wird er derzeit
erneuert. Spricht Projektleiter Manfred
Bertsche über seinen Bahnhof im
Wandel, steht ihm die Begeisterung
ins Gesicht geschrieben.
Manfred Bertsche, welche Bereiche
des Bahnhofs werden bis 2017 er-
neuert?
Die gesamte Bahnhofsanlage wird um-
fassend saniert und ausgebaut. Der
neu entstehende Kopfbahnhof ver-
fügt über schienenfreie Zugänge, fünf
Perrongleise und diverse Abstellgleise.
Unterirdisch gibt es neue Räume für
technische Anlagen und Nutzräume.
Einzig das Aufnahmegebäude bleibt
äusserlich in seinem bisherigen Kleid
bestehen. Die Innenräume erfahren je-
doch ebenfalls leichte Erneuerungen.
Derzeit noch in Planung befindet
sich der neue Busbahnhof, der die
Umsteigebeziehung zwischen Bahn
und Bus optimieren wird.
Wer den Bahnhof noch von früher
kennt, dem fallen vor allem die
Neuerungen zur Seeseite hin ins
Auge. Welche Veränderungen wur-
den hier vorgenommen?
Bei der Planung massen wir dem
Umwelt- und Landschaftsschutz gros-
se Beachtung zu. Für die Erweiterung
der Gleisanlagen wurde das Terrain
in Richtung See hin aufgeschüt-
tet. Entlang der Kantonsstrasse «Via
Grevas» am Seeufer haben wir auf ei-
ner Gesamtlänge von 250 Metern eine
neue Stützmauer erstellt. Dank der
Verkleidung mit Naturstein fügt sich
die Mauer gut ins Landschaftsbild ein.
Die baulichen Massnahmen ermögli-
chen zudem einen besseren, behinder-
tengerechten Zugang vom Bahnhof
zum See. Unter anderem wurde die
bestehende Personenunterführung
teilweise verbreitert und verlängert.
Sind Sie mit den Bauarbeiten im
Fahrplan?
Ja, wir sind auf Kurs. Besucher kön-
nen derzeit miterleben, wie sich der
Bahnhof Schritt für Schritt erneuert
und zusehends in neuem Glanz er-
strahlt. Die Sanierung und der Ausbau
erfolgen etappenweise – parallel zum
laufenden Bahnbetrieb. Die bereits
angesprochenen Arbeiten zum See
hin konnten wir 2014 erfolgreich be-
enden. Gleichzeitig wurde im Sommer
2014 das Gleis 1, das Hausperron,
umfassend saniert und mit einem
neuen Dach komplettiert. Nach der
Winterpause nahmen wir im Frühling
2015 das neue Berninaperron in

The station at St.Moritz is the bu-
siest on the Rhaetian Railway.
Over one million passengers from
all over the world come and go via this
hub. When all the eyes of the ski scene
are on St.Moritz from 6 to 19 February
2017 and thousands of winter sports
fans flock to the races on Corviglia, the
famous station will be ready to greet the
crowds with its new top-class infrastruc-
ture. This is part of the reason for the
current renovations. As project manager
Manfred Bertsche talks about the chan-
ges to his station, his eyes light up with
excitement.
Manfred Bertsche, which areas
of the station are being given a
facelift in time for 2017?
The whole of the station premises are
being comprehensively renovated and
extended. The new-look terminus will
have rail-free access routes, five platform
tracks and a number of sidings. Below
ground, new space will be created for
technical facilities and additional usable
space. Only the reception building will
look more or less the same as before,
although here, too, there will be some
improvements to the interior. A new bus
station to facilitate transfers between bus
and train is also in the planning stages.
Those who know the station as
it was before will be particularly
struck by the changes to the side
facing the lake. What alterations
are you making here?
When drawing up the plans we place
great importance on the environment
and protecting the landscape. The land
on the lake side has been infilled to take
the expanded track system, and we have
built a new 250-metre retaining wall
alongside the Via Grevas cantonal road
on the lakeside. The wall is clad with nat-
ural stone to ensure it blends in well with
the landscape. These structural works
also provide an improved route, with full
disabled access, from the station to the
lake. Among other things the existing un-
derpass has been extended and widened
in places.
Are you on schedule with the con-
struction works?
Yes, we’re on course. At present, visitors
can watch the progress of the renova-
tions as they happen and see the facelift
taking effect. The renovations and ex-
tension are being undertaken in stages,
while the station remains operational.
We successfully completed the aforemen-
tioned works by the lakeside in 2014.
In parallel with this, in summer 2014,
Platform 1, the main platform, under-
went a complete renovation including re-
roofing. After the winter break, in spring
2015, we went to work on the new
Bernina platform, which we completed
on schedule.
What advantages does the new sta-
tion offer to Glacier Express pas-
sengers?
Platforms for the two flagship Bernina
Express and Glacier Express lines have
also been built. The Bernina platform has
been equipped with an additional stair-
case and ramp. All the platforms were
given attractive new architect-designed
roofs. Glacier Express passengers who
arrive in groups by coach also benefit
from the new coach drop-off point we
have created to the lake side of the sta-
tion, where four vehicles can stop by the
coach platform.

DOK-Serie vom Schweizer Fernsehen
SRF über die Ausbildung von Piloten
und Rettungskräften in Nepal und
über Einsätze im Himalajagebirge, die
erstmals auf 7 000 m Höhe geflogen
wurden, ging in die Geschichtsbücher
der Flugrettung ein.
«Dank dem Zusammenspiel zwi-
schen Helikoptercrew und Bergretter
gelangten die Einsätze zu höchster
Effizienz. Hilfsgeräte wie das Dreibein,
das Gletscherspaltenrettungen ver-
einfacht, oder die Longline, die
Menschen mithilfe des Helikopters aus
ihren misslichen Lagen holen lässt,
haben Hunderten von Alpinisten
und Schneesportlern das Leben ge-
rettet», hält Gerold Biner bei unserer
Begegnung fest.
Touristenflüge für Erfahrung und FinanzierungWeiter meint er: «Nützliche Übungen
für die Ausführung dieser schwierigen
Rettungen erhalten die Piloten bei prä-
zisen Transport- und Touristenflügen
in der Walliser Bergwelt. Ohne die-
se Erfahrungen, wo auch immer, und
ohne diesen finanziellen Grundstock

Air Zermatt, based on the
outskirts of the village of
Zermatt, is a helicopter
business founded in 1968
by pharmacist, air rescue
pioneer and inventor Beat
H. Perren. Today the public
limited company has over
60 employees. The CEO is
Gerold Biner, 53, one of its
most experienced helicopter
pilots.
At the time of publication of this
magazine, Gerold Biner had un-
dertaken around 4,000 rescue,
transport and tourist flights at home and
abroad. Depending on the operations
schedule, he can call on 12 pilots, 16
flight assistants, 10 emergency doctors,
paramedics and transport aides, 12 li-
censed mechanics and 14 people in ope-
rations management, administration and
customer services. The helicopter fleet it-
self is impressive – a Lama, five Ecureuils,
a brand-new EC 130 T2 and two twin-
engine craft: an EC 135 and a Bell 429.
Rescue operations on the roof of the worldNot only is pilot and CEO Gerold Biner
famous for his rescue flights from 4,000
m mountains, but he also went down in
the annals of air rescue history with his
documentary series on Swiss TV chan-
nel SRF about training rescue pilots and
paramedic teams in Nepal, and about
the operations which involved the first
rescue flights to above 7,000 m.
“The teamwork between helicopter crew
and mountain rescue team ensured that
the operations were as efficient as pos-
sible. Equipment such as the tripod to
facilitate rescues from crevasses, and
the longline which enables people to
be lifted from awkward locations to the
helicopter, has saved the lives of hun-
dreds of mountaineers and snow sports
enthusiasts,” Gerold Biner tells us when
we meet.
Tourist flights provide experi-ence and fundsHe continues, “Pilots get useful practice
for these difficult rescue operations by
carrying out precision transport oper-
ations and tourist flights in the Valais
mountains. Without experience of this
kind – whatever the destination – and the
money these flights bring in, we would
not be able to offer the rapid rescue and
assistance we provide in Zermatt, Raron
and Gampel.”

thronende Matterhorn. Wenn Gerold Biner dann das Haus
verlässt, bekreuzigt er sich stets mit Weihwasser. Aus all

The concerned family of a mountain guide from South Tyrol had he-
ard nothing from the head of their family for hours. They clarified that
the three-strong team had set off at 2am the previous morning to
ascend Monte Rosa, but by 6pm they were concerned that they had
heard nothing from them and they were not responding to calls. A
mountain guide later found the exhausted trio above the Monte Rosa
hut. He radioed for Air Zermatt to come to the rescue. 18 minutes
later the climbers had been picked up and taken to the Zermatt base
station.
www.air-zermatt.ch
Gerold Biner and his mountain rescue teams value the willing-
ness by the Air Zermatt management to approve operations
abroad, such as in Nepal. “We can learn a lot and there are
mutual benefits,” says Biner, who also joined the foundation
management council for the Swiss air rescue organisation REGA
in 2015.
The forces of family, team and nature
Every operation presents its own challenges, especially when it
is a matter of life and death. These demanding airborne tasks
are a constant call on the lives of pilots and medics. “I am given
a lot of support, trust and freedom by my family. I am also sus-
tained by my belief in God. Without it I could often be driven to
despair,” Biner says.
He, his wife Sabine and their daughters Valerie (26) and Leonie
(23) have set some family house rules: “We never leave the
house with unresolved arguments. I discuss the difficult Air
Zermatt operations as little as possible with my family; it is more
important that I listen to their day-to-day problems and give
them my opinions and advice.”
The Biner family always eat breakfast together, as they do so en-
joying a magnificent view of the mighty Matterhorn. Whenever
Gerold Biner leaves the house he crosses himself with holy
water. All this gives him plenty of strength to face the day and
arms him for any stressful situation that may arise, as well as for
the increasingly frequent technical or official obstacles he may
encounter.

GORNERGRAT GUIDE
REGULA DE SANTIS:
NAHE AM HIMMEL
CLOSE TO HEAVEN
Die Gornergrat Bahn ist seit Sommer 2015
um eine Attraktion reicher: Neun erfah-
rene Gornergrat-Guides erzählen auf spe-
ziellen Touren charmant Spannendes und
Überraschendes über die nahe Bergwelt.
The Gornergrat Railway gained an additional at-
traction in summer 2015, with nine experienced
and charming Gornergrat Guides on special tours
to provide some exciting and surprising insights
into the surrounding mountains.
26 GLACIER EXPRESS
Die Führungen werden in den Sommermonaten
täglich auf Deutsch, Französisch und Englisch
angeboten.
gekommen?
Ich habe bei der Gornergrat Bahn 14 Jahre am Schalter
gearbeitet. Nach der Pensionierung wurde ich von meinem
früheren Arbeitgeber angefragt, ob die Guide-Aufgabe et-
was für mich wäre.
Premiere.
in diesem Sinn technisch sehr fortschrittlich. Informationen
Gletscherwelt, speziell, was den Gornergletscher betrifft.
(lacht).

Aufmerksame Feriengäste. Gornergrat-Guide Regula De Santis vermittelt viel Wissenswertes.
Attentive visitors. Gornergrat Guide Regula De Santis tells them lots of interesting facts and stories.
Was bedeutet Ihnen der Gornergrat persönlich?
Den Gornergrat empfinde ich als etwas Göttliches. Hier
bunden. Ich kann über die Evolution nur staunen.

Beruf: Erst Hotelrezeptionistin, dann vollamtliche Mama
Lieblingsfilm: «Dirty Dancing». Ich liebe tanzen. Mein Mann streikt leider …
28 GLACIER EXPRESS
The guided tours are offered daily in the summer months,
in German, French and English. On request they can
also be provided in Italian, Spanish or Japanese. Tickets
are available at the Täsch station, from the Zermatt ticket hall
and at the Gornergrat mountain station.
Regula De Santis, the Gornergrat Guides are the latest
feature to be offered by the Gornergrat Railway. How
did you come to be involved?
I worked at the Gornergrat Railway ticket desk for 14 years.
After I retired I was asked by my former employer whether I
would consider the job of guide. I didn’t have to think about
it for long. My husband, Luigi, 67 also does it, as he was re-
sponsible for the Gornergrat Railway for 30 years in his former
capacity as a tour guide.
Summer 2015 saw the first appearance of the
Gornergrat Guides. What do you do? And what does
it cost?
Passengers are offered a half-hour tour for CHF 7. It is free for
children under 16; groups of ten or more pay only CHF 5 per
person. We tell passengers about the Gornergrat and about the
Matterhorn – its history and ascents with their difficulties. 3,500
mountaineers attempt the Matterhorn each year without moun-
tain guides; rather a dangerous undertaking.
What else do you tell people?
About the Gornergrat Kulm Hotel and the pioneering construc-
tion of the electric Gornergrat rack-and-pinion railway. At a time
when 7,000 horses were pulling trams on the streets of Berlin,
the construction of the Gornergrat Railway in just two years
from 1896 to 1898 represented great technical progress. I also
tell people about the Monte Rosa massif and all about glaciers,
especially facts relating to the Gorner glacier. This is the second
largest glacier in the Swiss Alps, with a surface of 54 square
kilometres. From the Gornergrat visitors have a wonderful view
over 29 mountains over 4,000 metres high. They find it ama-
zing. At this altitude there isn’t a lot of flora and fauna – this is a
world of stone. (She laughs.)
How many guides are there altogether?
There are nine of us, of different ages and from different profes-
sional backgrounds, with three of us on duty on the Gornergrat
at any one time. Within the groups we have different language
skills – in addition to German we also offer English, French,
Italian and Japanese. We also have a lovely colleague from
Spain, who looks after tourists from his home country and other
Spanish-speaking parts of the world.
What has your experience of the visitors been so far?
Our visitors to date have been delighted with the tours, saying
they have learned so much about the Gornergrat and its sur-
rounding area. They also value the personal contact with a
guide.
What does the Gornergrat mean to you personally?
I think there’s something divine about the Gornergrat. When I’m
here I feel as if I’m a little closer to Heaven. Among the glaciers
you feel a close link with the origins of the Earth. I never cease
to be amazed by evolution.
REGULA DE SANTIS (66)Married since 1978. Daughter Caroline (33) and son Cesare (32). A
proud grandmother for three years.
Career: Began as a hotel receptionist, then full-time mother and, ten
years later, a ticket clerk for the Gornergrat Railway.
Motto for life: Follow your heart – for as long as you live!
Zermatt: I consider it my home today. I came here from Pfun-
gen-Winterthur at the age of 23.
The Gornergrat: A magical mountain with a lot of secrets.
The Matterhorn: An unmistakable outline, unique in all the world.
Favourite book: I’m fascinated by philosophical topics and novels. At
the moment I’m reading “Das Glück sieht immer anders aus” (Happi-
ness always looks different) by Milena Moser.
Favourite music: Folk music, my brothers yodelling, evergreen and
country songs. I particularly like Helene Fischer.
Favourite film: “Dirty Dancing”. I love dancing. Sadly my husband is
shy of joining me on the dance floor.

Combining the findings from the two sur-
veys, Germany is clearly in the lead – no
fewer than 45,031 of our northern neigh-
bours enjoyed a trip on the slowest ex-
press train in the world in 2014. Skilfully
constructed loop tunnels, bridges and
viaducts attracted 39,426 Swiss people to
the Glacier Express, and 27,750 Japanese
tourists travelled around 10,000 kilome-
tres to experience Heidi’s homeland for
themselves.
Swiss like independent travel
In comparison to its neighboring coun-
tries, Swiss people like to travel indepen-
dently. This is shown by looking at the
figures for individual passengers in 2014.
Switzerland easily leads the way here,
with a figure over 35,000, followed by
Germany with something over 13,000
individual travelers. Third place is held
by various smaller countries grouped to-
gether.
The USA narrowly misses a place on the
podium of spontaneous trippers (7,144).
Neck and neck, in 5th place, are the
Japanese with 7,119 passengers. The
British also achieve a good placing with
4,093. The increased market presence
of the Glacier Express in the Far East is
bearing fruit – China (3,850) and India
(3,551) account for a considerable num-
ber of Glacier Express visitors. Australia
(2,862) and Holland (1,235) complete
the top ten.
Schweizer reisen gerne indivi-
duell
Herr und Frau Schweizer reisen, im
Vergleich zu Ihren ausländischen
Freunden, am liebsten individuell.
Dies zeigt ein Blick auf die Zahlen
der einzelreisenden Fahrgäste 2014:
Die Schweiz liegt hier mit über 35 000
Fahrgästen mit Abstand an der Spitze,
gefolgt von Deutschland mit etwas
über 13 000 Individualreisenden. Auf
Platz 3 rangieren gemeinsam diverse
kleinere Länder.
Knapp am Podest vorbei schrammen
im Ranking der Individualreisenden die
USA mit etwas über 8 000 Personen.
Praktisch gleichauf, auf Platz 5, liegt
Japan mit 7 119 Fahrgästen. Eine gute
Rangierung erreichten auch die Briten
(4 093). Die verstärkte Marktpräsenz
vor Ort in Fernost trägt Früchte: China
(3 850) und Indien (3 551) zeigen auf
dem Glacier Express eine ansehnliche
Besucherfrequenz. Australien (2 862)

Kristin Brown, USA
(lebt in Zürich)
Beide Fahrten sind wirklich ganz toll.»“We first heard about the
Glacier Express through our friends in Houston. We found out more and decided on impulse to go to Switzer-land to experience the train ride for ourselves. This is a very special and unique train, on which beautiful lowland landscapes alterna-te with magnificent moun-tains. We caught the Glacier Express in St.Moritz and are now looking forward to spending a few wonderful days in Zermatt.”
“I’m travelling through Swit-zerland with a friend. We both enjoy travelling by train – it gives us time to chat and to enjoy the landscape. The trip on the Glacier Express is a real highlight for us, with the amazing views from the panoramic windows. We are also delighted by the ser-vice and the delicious food, which we can enjoy at our seats.”
“Switzerland, and the ele-gant Glacier Express in par-ticular, are well-known in Japan from TV and news-paper reports. I have been fascinated from a young age by pictures of the cantons of Graubünden and Valais in Switzerland. Now, for the first time, I can experience a trip on the Glacier Express for myself. Simply seeing the high mountains is amazing in itself, as every hour brings you closer. The weather has been really kind to me on my trip, for which I’m very grateful.”
“Switzerland is a beautiful, varied country with so much to see. It was while watching a TV travel programme that we got our initial impressi-ons of the Glacier Express and the landscapes it passes through. This is a birthday present for my wife, Sabine – granting her heart’s desire to travel on both the Bernina Express and the Glacier Ex-press. We took the Bernina Express yesterday and it’s the turn of the Glacier Express today. Both lines are truly excellent.”
“When I was still living in the USA I heard about the Glacier Express from reading stories in the ‘National Geo-graphic’ magazine. We have now come to live in Zurich and we can take the trip to Zermatt with our children. We find the different landsca-pes to be particularly impres-sive – the Rhine Canyon, the Graubünden meadows and Valais orchards, the water-falls and high mountains. I have a suggestion for the railway operators: what about an app for looking up additional information?”

“We came on the Bernina Ex-

in-law 2014. We travelled
second class then, but this
time we’re treating ourselves
to first class. The wonderful
service starts when you step
onto the station: we were
greeted warmly and guided
straight to our seats. This
way of travelling is comple-
tely different from flying –
you’re squeezed in on a pla-

plenty of room. I love pho-

“We’re now on our way with
the Glacier Express from Zer-

29 mountains over 4,000
metres, and have been de-
lighted with the views. The
pyramid shape of the Mat-
terhorn is so distinctive. The
Glacier Express route is full
of variety and fascinating in
its beauty. My husband and I
really like the menu, and the
fact that the food is served at
our seats. We’re really happy
with everything and will re-
commend this trip to all our
friends.”
“The trip on the Glacier Ex-
press is truly spectacular!
First, we travelled to Zermatt
from Basel with the Swiss
national rail service – an im-
pressive journey in itself. We
were discussing special tra-
vel destinations with a friend
who often comes to Switzer-
land on business, and he re-
commended the Glacier Ex-
press journey to my wife and
me. We love Zermatt, the
Matterhorn, the Gornergrat
with its breathtaking views
and the rail journey itself.”
“Switzerland has always
been somewhere our family
have dreamed of visiting.
Before our visit we resear-
ched lots of places and Swiss
background information on
the Internet. We were really
interested to learn about the
first ascent of the Matterhorn
150 years ago. Now we
have seen Zermatt, the Mat-
terhorn and the Gornergrat
for ourselves. The exclusive
trip on the Glacier Express
has been another highlight
for us. Our parents are also
delighted with this impres-
sive railway line and idyllic
region.”
“This is the first time that I
and my parents have been
on the Glacier Express. The
train is lovely and modern;
I particularly like the pano-
ramic windows. They’re so
wide that you feel really clo-
se to nature. My brother and
I occasionally play games
with my parents, so the lar-
ge table between our seats
is perfect. I particularly liked
Zermatt with its old houses
and of course the Matter-
horn. The first ascent 150
years ago was a great ad-
venture. We’ve talked a lot
about this story and all the
things we’ve discovered.”

Einer der erfahrensten
Lokomotivführer der Rhätischen
Bahn (RhB) ist Gaudenz Brunner.
Im Gespräch wurde schnell deut-
lich: Lokführer Brunner ist ein
Menschenfreund und legt grossen
Wert auf Sicherheit.
Gaudenz Brunner is one of the most
experienced engine drivers on the
Rhaetian Railway. In conversation it soon
becomes clear that he is also a people
person with a keen eye on safety.
rund 1 200 Mal fahren. Für mich ist diese Aufgabe immer
auch eine grosse Ehre.
Was ist denn so speziell?
Gebot.
Gaudenz Brunner, we have the pleasure of travelling
with you on the Glacier Express from Chur to Disentis.
Was it always your dream to be an engine driver?
I was in the right place at the right time. During my apprentice-
ship with the Rhaetian Railway I received a thorough grounding
in the mechanical side of the job, and my desire to become a
driver myself grew with time.
How often have you made the journey with the Glacier
Express?
I drive this special train up to four times a month. So since I’ve
become a driver I must have driven the Glacier Express around
1200 times. I still consider it to be a great honour.
What makes it so special?
It’s an awe-inspiring feeling to be able to set a 280-tonne train in
motion with a small movement of my hand.
How do you find the journeys – are they different eve-
ry time?
Yes, the trips vary depending on the time of year and the wea-
ther. As an engine driver you always have to concentrate and
pay great attention in order to safeguard the safety of your
passengers at all times. The high Alpine climate, snow drifts and
strong wind storms can also make the Glacier Express route dan-
gerous at times. Safety is always top priority for us.
37INSIGHT INSIGHT
Ausbildung, darunter zwei Frauen.
Nachwuchs gewinnen!
38 GLACIER EXPRESS
How many engine drivers does the Rhaetian Railway
have?
We have a total of 250 drivers at the Rhaetian Railway. At the
moment there are also eight trainee drivers, including two wo-
men. We are all qualified to drive the Glacier Express. As a driver,
it doesn’t matter which carriages you’re pulling – it doesn’t make
a difference to the technical operations.
What do you think about during the journey, as you
pass through these idyllic landscapes?
The wonderful Graubünden landscapes are amazing, but of
course they aren’t as important to me, the driver, as they are
to the passengers – I have to concentrate on the task in hand.
When we’re moving my eye is always on the controls, so I have
little time to enjoy the scenery. Things are different when I look
at the weather, the sky, and I have to analyse the conditions for
my driving.
Do you recall any particularly memorable encounters
with passengers?
In 1986, as a young driver, I was about to drive the train from
Davos to Filisur. On the platform a 75-year-old lady from Canada
came up to me and asked whether I was ever scared to drive
the train through the gorges and over the bridges. I replied that
I’d be more scared if I had to walk through a dark underpass in
Zurich in the middle of the night... The lady then travelled on
my train to Filisur and back to Davos, where she told me how
she had fled from Germany to Canada in 1938. She wasn’t rich,

but she wanted to give me a Canadian dollar as a thank-you
token. I was delighted with this show of appreciation. I still
have that Canadian dollar and enjoy remembering that lovely

You’re laughing – do you have a funny story to add?
Yes – once I was on the way from Arosa to Chur. Before setting
off I had got my manager’s permission for a father and son to
accompany me in the cab. When we were on a straightforward
stretch I allowed the lad to sound the horn. He was thrilled.
More than ten years later I was in Chur, standing by the loco-
motive, when a young man came up to me and greeted me by
name. I was surprised that he knew me, because my dark hair
had by then turned a magnificent white. The man told me that
it was my “fault” that he’d embarked on a career as an engine
driver on the Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon railway. He had been
the lad I’d allowed to sound the horn. I was delighted by this
encounter and the far-reaching effects of that horn. You never
know how you’re going to attract the future generation!

ÜBERLEBEN DANK BIO-BERGKÄSE
WAY OF LIFE SURVIVES
THANKS TO ORGANIC
MOUNTAIN CHEESE
Naturverbundene Bergbauern zei-
gen Kampfgeist: Um das Jahr 2000
war die bäuerliche Wirtschaftslage
im Goms angespannt, viele
Bauernfamilien hatten Angst um
ihre Zukunft. «Mit dem Niedergang
der Zentralkäserei in Niederernen
begann die Erfolgsgeschichte
der Bio-Bergkäserei Goms», sagt
Genossenschaftspräsident Roland
Müller. Heute liefern zehn Gommer
Landwirte 3 500 Liter Milch täglich,
die zu feinem Käse und weiteren
Milchprodukten verarbeitet werden.
Mountain farmers living close to na-
ture show a fighting spirit – around the
turn of the millennium, the agricultural
economy around Goms was put under
pressure, with many farming families fea-
ring for their future. “The demise of the
central cheese dairy in Neiderernen pa-
ved the way for the success story of the
Goms organic mountain cheese dairy,”
the association president, Roland Müller,
says. Today, ten farmers from around
Goms supply 3,500 litres of milk daily,
for processing into fine cheese and other
dairy products.
41TRADITION TRADITION
Das Bundesamt für Landwirt-
schaft förderte zu jener Zeit
lediglich die reine Biokäserei.
Nur ein paar mutige Bauern aus dem
Goms im Wallis wagten den Schritt
zur Umstellung, dabei wurde die
Genossenschaft Bio-Bergkäserei Goms
2001 voller Zuversicht und im Wissen
um gar manche Hindernisse gegrün-
det. Durch die Genossenschaft wur-
den die Bauern landwirtschaftliche
Unternehmer in einem schwierigen
Umfeld, die nachhaltig in einem Tal
mit 5 000 Einwohnern wirken wollten.
Die Fahrgäste im Glacier Express kön-
nen bei der Durchfahrt in Gluringen
die Bio-Bergkäserei Goms ca. 100 m
neben dem Bahngeleise sehen.
Rentabilität sicherstellen
«Um die Rentabilität sicherzustellen,
hätten seinerzeit vier Millionen Liter
Milch erwirtschaftet werden müssen,
aber die Abnehmerfirma gab einzig
eine Zusicherung für 600 000 Liter»,
erinnert sich Roland Müller – zu we-
nig, um zu überleben. Also musste
selbst gehandelt werden – mit einer
Genossenschaft. «Die zehn Bauern der
Bio-Bergkäserei Goms waren bereit,
über zwei Millionen Franken zu inve-
stieren – und dies in einer Zeit, als in
der Schweiz viele Käsereien ihre Tore
schliessen mussten.»
Enorm schwierig zeigten sich die
Verhandlungen für einen entspre-
chenden Kredit mit den Banken vor
Ort, diese dachten lediglich an eine
Solidarhaftung. «Die Bauern mussten
rund 250 000 Franken Eigenkapital
aufbringen.» Bei dieser schwie-
rigen Ausgangslage gingen die
Abklärungen weiter. Am Schluss gab
die «Alternative Bank Schweiz» den
hilfreichen Ausschlag und willigte in
einen Förderkredit ein.
Heute ist Landwirt Roland Müller, der
zudem Leiter der Skischule Münster
ist, froh, damals den Schritt gewagt zu
haben: «Wir führen in alter, kleinbäu-
erlicher Familientradition unsere land-
wirtschaftlichen Betriebe, produzieren
Milch nach den Richtlinien von Bio
Suisse und stellen diverse Käsesorten
und Butter, Rahm sowie Joghurt her.
In unserem Laden an der Furkastrasse
in Gluringen und online bieten wir ein
vielseitiges Produktsortiment an.»
Ideale Bedingungen in der
Natur
Die Bio-Bauern und ihre 230 Kühe
finden im Goms ideale Bedingungen,
um gute Milch zu produzieren. Dazu
der Chef der Genossenschaft: «Ein
sonnenverwöhntes Klima, gesunde
Bergluft, kristallklares Gletscherwasser
und saftige, blühende Weiden sind
hier zu finden. Feinwürzige Milch
von Tieren, die gut umsorgt sind
und sich wohlfühlen, dies sind die
natürlichen Grundlagen für die
Rohmilch-Produkte, welche in der
Bio-Bergkäserei Goms entstehen und
zum Verkauf angeboten werden.»
Alle hochwertigen Milchprodukte
erfreuen im Laden die Kunden,
Einheimische und Feriengäste aus
dem In- und Ausland, oder in der
Direktvermarktung via Online-Shop.
Beim Schweizer Grossverteiler Coop
werden die Produkte aus dem Goms
in der Bio-Linie «Pro Montagna» prä-
sentiert. Speziell ist seit 2007 der
Halbhartkäse «Walliser Bio-Bergkäse»
von der Bio-Bergkäserei Goms in zahl-
reichen Coop-Filialen in der Schweiz
erhältlich.
42 GLACIER EXPRESS
«BASCHI» – EIN
STARKER KÄSE
«BASCHI» – A
STRONG CHEESE
Der «Baschi-Käse» ist nach dem Obergom-
mer Sebastian Weger, genannt Wäger-Ba-
schi, benannt, der Ende des 18. Jahrhun-
Weniger
bekannt ist, dass Weger eine vielseitige, in-
telligente und einflussreiche Persönlichkeit
war und 1798 beim Aufstand gegen die
Franzosen einer der Anführer der Oberwal-
liser war.»
The “Baschi” cheese is named after Upper Goms
character Sebastian Weger, known as Wäger-Ba-
schi, a late 18th-century drover who roamed th-
rough Goms and over the Grimsel Pass. According
to Roland Müller, President of the Goms organic
cheese-making association, “The popular view of
Wäger-Baschi is that he was a giant of a man,
so strong that he could even lift his horse onto
his shoulders. It is less widely known that Weger
was a many-faceted, intelligent and influential
man who, during the 1798 uprising against the
French, was a leader of the Upper Valais rebels.”
At that time, the Swiss Federal
Office for Agriculture would
only gave financial support for
purely organic cheese-making, and only
a few courageous farmers from Goms
in the canton of Valais ventured to take
it up. They formed the Goms organic
cheese-making association in 2001, full of
confidence yet aware of the potential ob-
stacles. The association transformed the
farmers into agricultural entrepreneurs in
a difficult environment, with the aim of
running a sustainable business in a valley
of only 5,000 inhabitants. Passengers on
the Glacier Express can see the Goms
organic cheese dairy approx. 100 m
from the railway as they pass through
Gluringen.
Ensuring profitability
“To ensure profitability at the time, it
would have been necessary to produce
four million litres of milk, but the buyer
would only guarantee to take 600,000
litres,” recalls Roland Müller – too little to
survive. So they had to act for themselves
– in the form of an association. “The ten
farmers of the Goms organic cheese dairy
were prepared to invest over two milli-
on Swiss francs – at a time when many
Swiss cheese dairies were having to close
down.”
The negotiations with local banks for the
necessary credit proved incredibly diffi-
cult, as prospective lenders thought only
of the liability. “The farmers had to contri-
bute around 250,000 Swiss francs of their
own capital.” Against the background of
this difficult starting position, the discus-
sions continued. The Alternative Bank
Switzerland finally tipped the balance by
granting the much-needed development
loan.
Today, Roland Müller, both farmer and
manager of the Münster ski school, is
pleased that he was brave enough to
take that step. “We farm in traditional
small-scale family units, producing milk
in accordance with the Bio Suisse orga-
nic standards and offering a variety of
different cheeses as well as butter, cream
and yoghurt. We offer a wide range of
produce in our shop on the Furkastrasse
and online.”
The ideal natural conditions
The organic farmers and their 230 cows
enjoy perfect conditions for producing
good milk in Goms. The head of the asso-
ciation says, “The area offers a sunny cli-
mate, healthy mountain air, crystal-clear
glacier water and lush, verdant pasture
land. Full-flavoured milk from healthy,
well cared-for animals forms the natural
basis for the dairy products that are ma-
