Kennisgewing – GK Bellville Giving the glory to our Heavenly Father, we may announce that Classis Boland, on 12 June 2019, confirmed a decision of the Church Council of the Reformed Church Bellville to approve the secession of the members of the English speaking wards of Bellville to establish a self-sustaining church, Reformed Church Southern Suburbs (RCSS). Rev KP Steyn from GK Vredenburg/Saldanha has been appointed as first consulent. RCSS’s members are residing in various suburbs of Cape Town and adjacent areas. They will continue to make use of the facilities of the 2nd Scout Hall in Rondebosch. The secession ceremony was on 6 October 2019 at the Reformed Church Bellville.

Kennisgewing – Klassis Karoo-Kei Ontbinding van GK Cradock/Somerset-Oos Op sy vergadering van 10 September 2019 het Klassis Karoo-Kei toestemming gegee tot die ontbinding van die GK Cradock/Somerset-Oos. Die omstandighede (afname in lidmaattal, veroudering van gemeente, finansiële stand, ens) maak dit nie meer moontlik vir hierdie gemeente om as selfstandige gemeente te bly voortbestaan nie. Die GK Cradock/Somerset-Oos is reeds al vir ‘n geruime tyd vakant en moes staatmaak op leesdienste deur ouderlinge. Die Cradock-wyk en Somerset-Oos wyk van die gemeente sal onderskeidelik opgeneem word in die GK Middelburg en GK Graaff-Reinet. Geen bates van die gemeente word op hierdie stadium verkoop nie. Die kerkgeboue met inhoud van die twee bedieningspunte sal steeds aangewend word vir eredienste op Sondae. Dit is ons bede dat die Woordbediening op hierdie wyse steeds sal voortgaan in Cradock en Somerset-Oos en dat dit veelvoudige vrug sal dra. “OH, MY WORLD!”: FLASH NO 17 SMOKING! Dr William Strawmaker, spokesman of the Deputies: Environment of the RCSA, went visiting his neighbours’ son Andrew in hospital. Dr Strawmaker used to be a regular supporter at the youngster’s athletics meetings and later provincial rugby matches. The only problem which the doctor had with his junior neighbour was his cigarette smoking habit – and the little rascal continuously pestered him by flicking his cigarette butts over the wall onto the doctor’s lawn. Dr William would then patiently collect them and when he imagined he had gathered sufficient evidence would present himself next door with the incriminating proof of Andrew’s crimes: the reckless and irresponsible abuse of nature’s natural gifts, the contamination of creation with refuse which denigrates the environment and clogs waste treatment systems, a senseless burning of good money and (especially) persisting with a habit which will eventually endanger his life. The confrontations had always been in a good spirit and Andrew’s defence used to be that he was keeping himself fit (with an unmistakable reference to the doctor’s little paunch), did not use alcohol (a hint at the empty red wine bottle which every Monday morning was to be found in the Strawmakers’ trash bin) and with the assurance that he was going to quit smoking before any damage had occurred. And now, at 39 years, Andrew was lying in hospital after having survived a massive heart attack – but with permanent damage to that vital organ. Dr William arrived at his bedside well armed with documents from the internet which graphically and statistically demonstrated the evils and dangers of the smoking habit. Dr William: “Andrew! I am pleased to see you lying in a bed. It could just as easily had been in a coffin!”. Andrew: “Thank you so much for coming – but just don’t start lecturing me again!”. Dr William: “I am not coming lecturing. I am coming with facts. You have survived only by God’s grace. It was a hair’s breadth away from Marlene’s having had to bring up your Danny and Georgy on her own. I am leaving these articles here for you to read and think about: smokers have a 25% shorter life expectancy that non-smokers. Their quality of life is lower because they have impaired smell and taste and they have to function with lower blood supply: their veins and arteries have been clogged by harmful deposits and had hardened. Smoking makes you susceptible to many forms of cancer. Also you are impairing the quality of life of your family by their exposure to secondary “smoking” and by your selfish burning of money which could have been used for the enjoyment of all. Think about the fact that case studies have shown that most children start smoking through following the example of their parents – and they move on to harder drugs by arguing that their addiction is in principle not worse than addiction to nicotine”. Andrew: Jeepers, Uncle, you are serious today! But do you know I am lying here with goose bumps and shivering? That is not improving my condition – and all I need is one cig to calm me down. Will you not please smuggle in one packet for me? I promise that will be my last one. I have already asked the sister for that little help, but she flatly refused. Dr William: “Andrew! I never realized how great your problem has become, but now I know: you are hooked on nicotine – addicted! It is in your head and in your body! I do hope they will keep you here in hospital until you have chilled out. But then your head still has to be sorted out – and that is much more difficult. You are at war with an insatiable monster and you need all the help you can get. I am going to speak to

pastor James: he is an experienced and competent biblical counsellor and he will stand by you through thick and thin”. Andrew: “Uncle Bill, are you not going a bit overboard now? Do I not have to decide for myself?”. Dr William: “Sure! But I am not convinced that you realize how serious this issue is and how difficult to deal with. You do need help! Andrew: I will let you know. Dr William: Thanks, Andrew, and I have a proposal: on the day that you have made the right decision, you come over and you start teaching me about getting fit and I will teach you what 1 Corinthians 10:23,24,31 means – starting with one glass of good red wine per evening!”.
