D arwin to Katherine
by BicycleGordon Bowman does it again,
he has made anolher bike ride
Darwin to Katherine, a great
success.
f here was no discrimination, asI he even allowed twoI transvestites, Jamie and
Brenden, to loin in on theproceedings. Anne brought alongher ammunition, which consisted ofwater guns and glow in the darkcream and glitter. This was used onevery one including those sleeping.
The first two riders off the rankwere Gordon and Trudy on theirtandem. The tandem proved to be abetter bike than the solo kind as all theway to Katherine the riders had tocontend with a headwind, which notonly slowed people down but somedecided they had enough and optedfor a sleep in the bus along with thesnoring and smelly leet. lt seemedthat only a few people brought theirpillow and it was first in, first served, lor both space and pillows.
A quick stop at Pine Creek wasnecessary as some one forget tocheck the fuel before leaving Darwin,
this proved to be a nece'ssary stop, as
most people headed to the toilets.Chris T. and Anne chose to jog
rather than ride and what a sight itwas for the passing tourists, halfnaked people trotting along the lonelyStuart Highway, still it did make achange from wandering live stock.
The Katherine Ambulance gave theriders an escort into town, and twopeople, Anton and Jan, were trailing
behind the pack. Jan gave chase and
the bets were down, who would catchup to the pack of riders first, much toAnton's delight, he was the first toreach the riders ahead.
There is always one in the group
who have to make a spectacle of
themselves and fall off their bike, lustas well the support van had good
brakes. Out came the cetramide and
elastoplasts, which were the only first
aid supplies used on the trip. There were bodies everywhere at
the Paraway in Katherine on Saturdayafternoon, but they soon awoke at
dusk to join the BBQ and music at theAmbulance Station. Frank Haydockand his accomplice playing the musicwith Robert T. joining in. Brenden
found a boxing friend and after
beating him in the boxing ring, brought
him back to loin the party.
As usual, those with the party
animal in them went raging at Kirbies
Disco after the BBQ, and in the
morning all gathered at Katherine
Ambulance Station for a quick
breakfast and then onto the bus forthe journey home. A quick stop off atBatchelorto say goodbye to Donna on
the way back to Darwin.

and ALS care in both ground and air
services to over 540,000 residents.
While visiting Eastern I was fortunate tomeet both the President and ExecutiveVice-President of the Company, Russ
Bayer and Mike Dodge and their initial
hospitality was typical of the reaction wewere to receive.
Cornhuskers (Nebraskans) are
famous for their friendliness, hospitality
and sincerity - well, if they're not
famous theyshould be! lt's anarea of the Statesthat has retainedgenuine, family-based values and
I honestly thoughtol Mum, apple pie
and the Stars and
Stripes every nowand then. I mean
this as a verysincerecompliment
;:l
because therewere certainlyother parts olAmerica that I
thought wereplastic, glittery and
artilicial, butNebraska and
Nebraskans arethe exact oppositeof that image.
I was veryimpressed with their CAD,
communications, rostering, vehicle(F350 diesel vans) and general
operational systems and I was lortunateenough to meet staff from everyoperational and administrative area of
Eastern. Doug, Marci, Mindy, Linda,
Teni, Patti, Dick, Matt, Holly, Bruce,
David, Jeff, Mike and Jackie would be
meaningless christian names for mostreaders, but they are owned by people
who went out of their way to help me
with any information I needed. Theywere also very interested in Australiaand our Service and I had to run acouple of 'slang'classes to make sure
they got it right for their visit.
I was also quite lucky in that I got tosee all three major cities in Nebraska.
Omaha is the largest, Lincoln thesecond and the University of Nebraskafootball stadium on a home game day isthe third. Nearly 80,000 fanatical'Husker'lans filled the stadium on theSaturday we were there and theatmosphere was just incredible. I
couldn't help but remind mysetf that theentire population of Darwin was sitting
in a football stadium with me ... all
supporting the same team. You can
only imagine the noise and pageantry.
lf anyone is interested I do havesome information on Nebraska and inthe very near future we will be calling
for expressions of interest to both
undertake the (sponsored) trip toNebraska and to host a visitor in June/F350 Console

The past six months has seen theOrganisation move towards a strongercomputerisation policy with theintroduction ol'direct debit' facilitieslor our monthly creditor payments andthe automatic computer based payroll

The links to theRegional Centres continues toimprove with more accurate andspeedy information now availableTerritory wide on all Centres computerequipment. We have also upgradedour telephone system and moved tothe Government based NCOMtelephone network. lt is envisaged thatthis move will generate substantial
cost savings and when all centres arelinked in a similar manner, ease ofcommunication and further savingswill result.
We recently had a visit from ShaneDobbin the National PR hnd Marketinglady with St John National Head-

in the Northern Territory. Evidence ofthis was our very successful St Johnweek promotion and casualtysimulation exercises we conducted inCasuarina Square on 12 and 13
October 1995 and the promotion andopen day conducted at the AliceSprings centre. Gove region were alsoactive during this time running adisplay and information exchange at
the Gove Hospital grounds.A pleasing matter that occurred at
the launch of St John Week by theMinister for Territory Health ServicesMr Fred Finch was the presentation toJenny Kirby of the Tenitory's first StJohn Ambulance Australia'NationalSave a Life Award'. Jenny receivedthis award for the actions she tookwhilst on holidays in Alice Springswhich saved the life of a road accidentvictim. Jenny's daughter Jariyah wasalso presented with the National'Certificate of Merit Award'for herassistance in comlorting the victimduring his ordeal until the Ambulancearrived. A very emotional reunion tookplace between the patient and theKirbys in the Alice Springs Hospital on18 October 1995.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES MANAGER
Following discussions at
District and Gouncil levels it
was decided to create a
position designaled'Volunteer
Services Manager'. I was
appointed to this position and
commenced duties on Monday
3 July, 1995.
.F he primary responsibilities of theI position are the recruitment,Letention and training of an
appropriate number of voluntaryresources for St John AmbulanceAustralia (NT) lnc.
To ascertain the number ofvolunteers required to adequatelycover the roster, an audit of thenumber of duties requested and thenumber of duties covered, wasundertaken. The second part of theaudit was to review which Officerswere covering which duties. Notsurprisingly I lound that most ol theduties, in tacl877", were being done
by the same group of Officers, manyof whom also do regular ambulanceduties.
A volunteer recruitment drive wascommenced, utilising each arm of themedia: television, radio andnewspaper. lnterest was instant andwe have since conducted lnformationNights in Darwin, Gove, TennantCreek, Batchelor and Katherine withexcellent results overall.
It appears that Alice Springs do nothave a problem with volunteernumbers and so as a climax to StJohn's week, Saturday 14 October, weconducted an open day at the AliceSprings Ambulance Centre where weanswered questions in regard to bothadult and cadet volunteers, plus otherareas of St John.
Two packages have been made upfor (i) interested (ii) incomingmembers. Package (i) is anlnlormation Package, giving a briefoutline of St Jchn Australia and StJohn NT. lt covers uniforms, training, public duties, courses and efficiencyrequirements. Package (ii) is anlnduction Package covering all of theabove in more detail plus covering
other areas such as Communications,Administration and Rank Structure.
The packages are designed so thatthe volunteer can work through themat their own pace, and the inductionpackage has a workbook componentso that they can practice completingcase cards, learning the phoneticalphabet, radio procedures, etc.
lnterviews are being conductedwith both present members and pastmembers to seek their opinions on thehighs and lows of their Division and/orOperations Branch in general and togain their ideas. As well a question-naire has been prepared to circulateamongst the Officers whom I can notinterview, due to distance or time and/or who would prefer not to beinterviewed.
Although the position is timeconsuming, the rewards include acloser working relationship with eachof our Divisions, various communitygroups and greater communityeducation of our organisation and thevarious arms that we incorporate. I
believe the end results can only bebeneficial to our organisation.Edeline SINCLAIRVolunteer Services ManagerOctober 1995

More Logical Progression Through Programmes
1996 will be a year of evolution
within the Ambulance Oflicers
Training Gollege, specifically
in lhe area of unit terminology
lor the various units within lhe
Associate Diploma and
Gertilicate programmes. The
changes being introduced will,
it is anticipated, more
accurately reflect the nature of
the units being oflered and
allow for a more logical
progression through
the programmes.
number of units will undergo aname change in 1996. lntro-duction to Ambulance Care
(SJAI01) will become Clinical StudiesOne (SJA1 01 ); Patient Care/MedicalEmergencies (SJA103 & SJA104) willbecome Clinical Studies Two(SJA1 03); Obstetrics, Paediatrics andAbnormal Behaviour (SJA201,SJA202 & SJA203) become ClinicalStudies Three (SJA201). Cardio-vascular, Respiratory and Trauma(SJA301, SJA302 & SJA303) arerenamed Advanced Clinical StudiesOne. TGD065 - Paramedic Studieswill become Advanced ClinicalStudies Two (still retaining theTGD065 coding).
There will be no changes to thestructure or Learning Outcomes ofthese units. What will occur is
information contained within individualunits will be spread throughout therevised structure to assist in thedevelopment of a more appropriatecomponent composition.
The AOTC approach to exam-inations, assessments and evalua-tions will eventually require somerevision although the presentstrategies will fit nicely into the revisedstructure. Actual Student ContactHours will not change at this time, although this is an area which isconstantly under review in an effort toprovide the most beneficial learningexperiences to Student Officers. A fargreater emphasis, particularly atAdvanced Clinical Studies One level, will be placed on students in the areaof course assignments. Rather thansimply issue an assignment to be
completed out of the standardtexts and student knowledge, the'research' assignments will requireparticipants to look past readilyavailable information. This maymean contacting various specialistareas appropriate to the assignmenttopic, broader reading than iscurrently required, and a morerounded presentation which mayinclude protocol recommendationsbased on up-to-date patientmanagement principles.
1995 saw the completion - apartfrom all the AD and Certificate Awardcourse units - of another ParamedicStudies programme. The selectionprocess for a place on this programmecommenced in June of 1995 withRegional Managers being given a listof names of Officers in their Regionwho were 'eligible'to be selected intothe final eight for the programme. Asthe number of nominations fromRegional Managers exceeded thenumber of places available in theprogramme, a three stage selectionprocess was initiated.
Stage One of this process was thePre-Entry examination which was ofthree hours duration and required an80% pass. Successful candidatesfrom Stage One then went into StageTwo, the submission of a case studybased on a recently completed casethe Officer had been involved in.
Stage Three (for those remaining),was an interview. lnterviews wereconducted both in Alice Springs andDarwin and were followed by anintense round of discussions to
emerge with the 'final 8'. At StageThree, the selection process becomescomparative in nature and a finaldecision was taken based on a criticalcomparison oJ all candidates whopresented Jor interview. lt isappropriate to remember that allOfficers nominated by their RegionalManager were considered as equals, that is, they had as much right as thenext Officer to be there, a right borneout by their initial nomination. lt isunfortunate that in such situationsthere has to be winners and losers, but winners and losers there are. Those who were successful have aright to feel they have achieved asignificant milestone in their career. Those who were unsuccessful in 1995will, I am sure, enterthe process whennext it is available with that wonderfultool that can be of so much benefit tous all, prior knowledge.
ln conclusion, I would like to (verybelatedly) welcome QCO Tony OxJordto the Training College. Tony bringswith him a range of experiencesachieved through his long associationwith St John and an enthusiasm sonecessary to his role. I have everyconfidence that Tony will have asignificant impact in both his QCOfunction and as the co-ordinator ofAssociate Diploma studies.
ln closing, I wtshall staff and thetr familtes

Buying a car?
Make sure you drive the best finance dealBuying a car is a major
purchasing decision, so it
makes sense to shop around
for lhe besl deal.
ccording to Mr Geoff Doyle,General Manager, Police CreditUnion Limited, the same detail
and care taken to find the right carshould be taken to secure the bestfinance.
"All too often we find that police putmost of their effort into finding theperfect car and leave the issue of howthey will finance their purchase untillast. At this point they may feel thepressures ol time and a vendorwanting to finalise the deal.
"Unfortunately in this situation, many people grab the lirst financeoption and this may not be the bestone in the long run."
Police Credit Union offers somepractical advice for anyone thinkingabout taking out a personal loan topurchase their car.
"Before taking out a loan, buyersshould consider the following:
. What is the interest rate?
. ls the loan fixed or variable?
. How is interest calculated? ls it dailyor upfront?
. ls security needed for the loan?
. ls the loan structured so that I canpay it off quickly?
. What is the term of the loan and arethere any penalties for early
repayment?. Are there any loan establishment
fees?. Can I save money by making
weekly or fortnightly repayments? We are in the business of offering
competitive personal loans tailored tobenefit the member.
"Our motor vehicles personal loansare extremely competitive with ratesstarting at 13.45 per cent.
"There are no charges for earlyrepayments, no hidden fees, noestablishment costs other than aninexpensive application fee.
"Police Credit Union takes thehassle out of applying for personalloans. Subject to meeting lendingrequirements, loans can be approvedover the phone in less than t hour."
Never t00 late to get the savings habit!"Watch the cents and the
dollars will take care of
themselves" may be an old
adage, but it remains just as
relevant today.
ccording to Mr Geoff Doyle,General Manager, Police CreditUnion Limited, too many people
have a casual attitude to saving andfall into the spend now, worry latertrap.
"Having a 'live for today' mentalitysounds great but you have no savingsto fall back on if your circumstanceschange.
"Part of the problem is that savingseems too hard and unexciting. Butthe opposite is true. By saving, peopleare buying peace ol mind and creatingopportunities to purchase what theyneed. Savings enable you to provide afinancially secure future for yourself."
Police Credit Union suggests thatto save effectively, people shouldmake sure that they are able to meettheir present financial commitments,to set aside money for spending andthe rest for savings should be putaway.
"U ltimately, savers should allocate
a specific amount which they.will putaway on a regular basis.
"They should consider what theirmajor lifestyle and savings goals are, such as overseas travel, buying a car, supporting children, buying a homeand retirement. Once these savingspriorities are established, they canwork out how to realistically save forthem."
Even the smallest savings can addup to a large amount over time.
"All too often the excuse for notsaving is that it's only a small amountso it's not worth saving. But, by puttingaway only $100 a week, your savingswill amount to $5,200 by the end ofthe year.
"This opens up a range ofinvestment options which make evenmore money!"
Police Credit Union offers verycompetitive term deposit amounts andthe 'Premier'account offering 6.00 percent at call. Also, no FID and BADapplies to the 'Premier'account.
"Like all credit unions, we offercompetitive rates because unlike otherfinancial institutions, credit unions aremember owned. All profits arereturned to members in the form ofbetter interest rates and services.
"We also offer the member theopportunity to have their repayments
deducted from their salary, Thismeans that the member does nothave to worry about when a payment
is due."Over 3.1 million Australians are
experiencing the credit unionditference."
Police Credit Union is located atSmith Street, Darwin, or alternativelyyou can call direct on 81 9082 during9am-5pm.
NT & BEYONDIt sounds like an urban myth,
but we are assured it happened.A visitor to Darwin was jogging
along the Nightcliff loreshorewhen he got a stone in his shoe.He leaned against a power polewhile trying to shake it loose. Awell-intentioned passerbythought the shaker was beingelectrocuted and grabbed apiece of wood to knock him free. The result? A trip to RoyalDarwin Hospital with a brokenarm before returning to thesouth.

;;Letter ofthanksJohn AppleyardAlice Springs Ambulance CentreTelegraph TerraceAlice Springs, NT 0870
Dear Mr Appleyard,My name is Vasi Papazoglou.
Recently I enrolled in a Senior First AidCedificate course which ran fromMonday 22nd lo Friday 26th May. Myinstructor was Wayne 'Fitzy' Fitzgerald.
The course was presented in anexcellent manner. The informationgiven each night was easy tounderstand and easy to follow. Plentyof time was allowed for questions, which was invaluable.
From the beginning Fitzy wasextremely easy to approach and he told
us exactly what we would learnthroughout the week, and what wewould need to know for the exam.Unfortunately, he stopped short oJ
actually giving the paper to us onMonday night! He kept the atmosphereinformal with his sense of humour, which helped to overcome theawkwardness one feels when loining anew group of unknown people.
The purpose of this letter is to pass
on my thanks to Fitzy, once again, andto also congratulate St JohnAmbulance for having such a greatinstruclor.
Yours faithfully,
Vasi. Papazoglou,Teacher, Tennant Creek High School

The training culminated recentlywhen the Cadets were presented withtheir First Aid Certificates at a paradeconducted at the Ambulance Centre.Further awards were presented toKirsty O'Shea and Christopher Wilsonfor the attainment of their 200 hourservice badge and to Rinata Quinlanfor her promotion to Cadet Leader.
Following the parade the Cadetsand parents relaxed and enjoyed abarbecue and games evening.
As a result of their training theTennant Creek Cadet Division enteredtwo Teams and an lndividual in theDistrict Competitions held in DarwinFriday 6 October. The results wereexcellent and showed this Division as
a force to be contended with inthe future.
ll you had been passing the
Tennant Creek Ambulance
Centre on a Wednesday night
recently, you may have
wondered aboul the aclivities
occurring which, to some,
might have seemed a
bit gruesome.
Wlh:i:riu,i;",',;:r#learning first aid skills which areinvaluable at the time of accidents.
The training simulates injuries towhich the Cadets may be exposedwhen attending various communityevents, school yard incidents oraccidents at home.

MELl0IB0SIS thefactsIn NorthernAustralia and other tropical artasthroughout the world a dangerrus bacteria is
found in mud and surfacr water during the
wet serson. Tbis bacteria, Burkholderia(formerly Pscudomonas) p seudomalle i, can
cause a serious illness, called melioidosis, especially in people wbo have underlyinghedth problems. This illness can cause death.
Heavy rainfalls cause the bacteria, which
usually lives deep in the soil, to come to the
surfacc increasing the possibility of exposure.
,tovFor the bacteria to cause illness it needs to enter
the body, which usually occurs th,rough cuts orsores that come in contact with soil or mud. This
happens by walking, working, gardening orplaying (ie sport) in mud or pooled water.
wHoPeople with existing chronic illnesses arc more
susceptible to getting melioidosis. These include
peoplc who have diabetes, excessive alcohol
intake, immunosuppression (ie cancer or steroid
treatment), or who arp over the age of 50 years.
But healthy people who have a lot of contact with
soil could also be at risk.
sYnP7oHsThe illness usually follows a few days after
exposure to drud or soil and is characterised byhigh feven, headache and confirsion. Drfhculty inbreathing and passing urine may also occur, Insonre cases the illness comes on morc slowly withweight loss, intermitlent fevers, chest or aMominalpain, and a cough. Ifany syutptoms ar€ presetrt,
you should seek medical advice EARLY and state
that you have had contact wift soil.
PEEVENT'ONMinirnise your contact with mud, soil and surface
water during the wet season. Cuts, sores orgrazes these should be cleaned thoroughly and
covered with waterproof dressings. It isimportant that you wear waterproof shoes orboots when around mud and surface water, and
protective gloves when handling soil. Mud and
soil should be washed from the body as soon as
practicable and soiled clothing should be
changed. People must recognise that the
commonest risk factors for melioidosis and
death from disease are alcoholism and diabacs, and therefore prevention and connol ofthese risk
factors is important.
17 clsEsOver half of the cases diagnosed in the NT have
had a history of excessive alcohol intake and
about 40% have been diabetic. The mostcornmon presentation has been pneumonia but it
can affect any organ. In the past five years there
have been ll5 cases of melioidosis with a 20 -30% mortality rate. Deaths have also been
recorded in North Queensland and in the tropicalregions of Asia.
