GIVE THANKS RENDERE GRAZIE
A letter from President Joan Tasoglu
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
I hope all of you had a pleasant October, and did something to honor and participate in for
Italian Heritage and culture month.
As a lodge we co-sponsored the Italian film "Girl by The Lake" shown at the Sayville Library on
Oct. 3rd, presented by our member Irene Eckert, who did a wonderful job as usual.
On Oct. 12th, many of us participated in the Huntington OSIA Columbus Day Parade
and went out for dinner afterwards.
The Lodges’ Halloween Party was held on social night, Oct. 15th. All who attended,
had a great time playing games, dressing up and enjoying treats.
Our Halloween Flapjack Fundraiser at Applebee's was a success, netting us a small profit.
The November meeting will be the last time we will be collecting items for our troops this year.
Due to every ones generosity, we have many things being shipped to them. We will be filling two
dozen Christmas stockings with candy after our meeting, which will be included in our packages.
Our Thanksgiving Food Drive and our Christmas Toy Drive are both in full swing.
Please bring items to our Nov. and Dec. meetings.
Brother Seby is collecting money for our Dec. 10th Christmas party at Flanagan's Pub.
We have a great menu and the cost is $35 pp.
It is time to pay your 2015 membership dues.
Please see Financial Secretary, Sister Carmela or Treasurer Brother Nat.
Fraternally, Sister Joan
VETERANS DAY IS ON TUESDAY NOVEMBER 11. PLEASE STOP AND TAKE A MINUTE OR TWO, GIVE THANKS TO
THE MEN & WOMEN WHO HAVE OR ARE CURRENTLY SERVING OUR COUNTRY PROUDLY. FLY THE FLAG
Hold in your heart, Italian Canadian, Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, who, while standing ceremonial guard at the
National War Memorial Canada, was shot down by a gunman, October 22, 2014.
This day is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which ended the World War I hostilities between the Allied nations
and Germany in 1918. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 an armistice between Germany and the Allied
nations came into effect. On November 11, 1919, Armistice Day was commemorated for the first time. In 1919, President Wilson
proclaimed the day should be "filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gra titude
for the victory". There were plans for parades, public meetings and a brief suspension of business activities at 11am.
In 1926, the United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I and declared that the anniversary of the armistice
should be commemorated with prayer and thanksgiving. The Congress also requested that the president should "issue a
proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and
inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate
ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.
Sons of Italy, Originally called Figli d'Italia,
Children of Italy, founded June 22, 1905. In its early years, OSIA established free schools to
teach immigrants English and centers to help them become U.S. citizens

Culture Presentation of “Italian Hero” Giuseppe Garibaldi byCarlo Mattuecci
Due to time constraints there were some items about Giuseppe Garibaldi that are important but were not mentioned during my presentation. At the meeting I was wearing a red shirt because Garibaldi’s Italian Legion were known as “red shirts.” In 1845
Argentine dictator Juan Manuel de Rosas invades Uruguay, and Garibaldi becomes first a colonel, then Commander in Chief in the
Uruguayan navy. He organizes Italian political exiles to form an Italian Legion known as the “Red Shirts.” In 1861 Giuseppe
Garibaldi is offered a commission as Major General in the army of the United States by President Abraham Lincoln. Garibaldi’s two
conditions---that slavery be abolished and that he be the Commander-in Chief of the army---are not met, and second the
unification of Italy has not yet been achieved, so although he holds Lincoln in high esteem, he refuses.
