A letter from President Joan Tasoglu

    Dear Sisters and Brothers,

I hope all of you had a pleasant October, and did something to honor and participate in for

    Italian Heritage and culture month.

As a lodge we co-sponsored the Italian film "Girl by The Lake" shown at the Sayville Library on

  • Culture Presentation of “Italian Hero” Giuseppe Garibaldi byCarlo Mattuecci

Due to time constraints there were some items about Giuseppe Garibaldi that are important but were not mentioned during my presentation. At the meeting I was wearing a red shirt because Garibaldi’s Italian Legion were known as “red shirts.” In 1845

Argentine dictator Juan Manuel de Rosas invades Uruguay, and Garibaldi becomes first a colonel, then Commander in Chief in the

Uruguayan navy. He organizes Italian political exiles to form an Italian Legion known as the “Red Shirts.” In 1861 Giuseppe

Garibaldi is offered a commission as Major General in the army of the United States by President Abraham Lincoln. Garibaldi’s two

conditions---that slavery be abolished and that he be the Commander-in Chief of the army---are not met, and second the

unification of Italy has not yet been achieved, so although he holds Lincoln in high esteem, he refuses.
