Posti is 100 % location based7 sorting centers
30 terminals
340 delivery centers
1 400 post offices (incl. SmartPOST)
3 000 zip codes
6 900 letter boxes
2 500 000 addresses
3 200 000 mail delivery points
8 000 000 items flows through process every week day
4300 mail delivery and 1200 early morning delivery routes
3000 parcel, express, freight, pickup and delivery routes
250 linehaul routes
Recognize, capture and utilize location information to gain
efficiency in manner of planning and analyzes, and also to
enable new services
Internal
Three areas where Posti has successfully been using GISRoute optimization needs from
delivery to transportationRouting needs from high density mail and
early morning delivery to parcel and
pickups up until linehaul routing. Several
efficiency and service analysis needs also
routing as part of decision making
process. In future we need to be more
dynamic in all different routing areas.
Network modellingModelling and optimizing networks as
operative areas and locations in different
scales, e.g. from grouping of mail boxes
to sorting center network optimization,
recent emphasis has been on delivery
center network optimization. Enables
strategic, tactical and operative decision
making process.
Segmentation and targeted
marketingModelling and recognizing different
segments for targeted marketing and
service offering purposes and also for
understanding operational demand
allocation and capacity needs.

2. Demand
variation
between the
days and
during a year,
which also
contains huge
geographical
variation
Planning – demand forecasting1. Demand is having variation in geography, as
service type, duration and frequency. Outdoor
work is dividing into mail delivery and other
work, already 30 % of outdoor is other work
Need to
implement
more GIS into
demand
forecasting
and capacity
planning,
especially into
outdoor

Planning – empowering regional managers with ArcGIS Portal Web App
• Centralized route planning team has been communicating route solutions via ‘pdf-maps’, now with ArcGIS
Portal, we are empowering regional managers with route plan solution, where they can observe all other
relevant information to evaluate plan’s quality and efficiency

Planning – improving route solution quality for parcel delivery
• In the past we focused on efficiency with our route planning, now when mail delivery time window changed from 16
to 18, we needed to improve route optimization quality to meet parcel delivery service levels 14 and 16
• It is possible to see parcel delivery service quality based on our mail delivery route plan with parcel volume demand
Parcel volume is
delivered by mail
delivery covering
over 90 % of
Finland. So mail
delivery needs to
meet parcel’s
service quality.
Analyzing route plan to
discover weighted parcel
delivery service level by
comparing areas of LTA14 and
LTA16 against parcel volume
and route plan on delivery
point level. If not meeting 99 %
level, other actions are agreed
to meet the service level.
”Late zones”
are having
approximately
less than 10
parcels per
day

PoMo GPS tracking still needs improvements. Idea
is to show status of delivery operations to managers
real time and get information back to route planner
to validate planning process and parameters.
PoMo is enabling us to show route information as a list and as a route
sequence on a map. Employees choose their daily route and are able to
see information of the routes and delivery points. This enables dynamic
route and schedule planning and also integration of other services.
Delivery operations execution – PoMo as crucial GIS UI

First we focus on transportations from inbound sorting centers to delivery centers
Second check point is to follow, if routes’ are starting on time
Now our full attention is in parcel service quality, especially in mail
delivery, which is hard to maintain, if routes are starting late
Things to
implement:• Transportations
also on map
• Schedule of
indoor and
outdoor work
also on map
• Route
sequence on a
map and
executed
footprint
• Real time
tracking
• Parcel service
quality to
executed
routes

E2E-process transparency and tracking mail products
Foundation is set to show products’ process flow
• Shipment of magazines is collected by Posti on 15th of March and we can see shipment’s items per each
zip code
Internal
E2E-process transparency and tracking mail products
Foundation is set to show products’ process flow
• On 16th of March, we
can distinguish
unloading of
transportation units in
inbound centers
• Part of shipment’s
items are no longer
trackable, because of
sorting process
• Plan is covering
missing process
information
• In the future sorting
machines will cover
tracking as well

• On 17th of March is
shipment’s delivery

• Majority of the items
are no longer
trackable, so plan

missing process
information
• We can distinguish
‘straight’ transportation
units from press to
delivery centers as
blue and green, which
are processed and
delivered as agreed

E2E-process transparency and tracking mail products
Foundation is set to show products’ process flow• On 17th and 20th of
March we can distinguish
process actions leading
to late delivery
• In Tampere there are
bundles in inbound
sorting
• In Espoo there are
delivery taking place on
20th
• In the future, we increase
tracking, transportation
connections will be
added in and other
process information on
map, tracking will be
available to our clients

Future theme in GIS: from complex to simplex • Empowering more regional operational managers and employees
• To see and comment planning data and plans – strategic and tactic
• On operative level see what is happening – understand the process and its bottlenecks
• In the future, daily planning on a local level and real time analytics
• Guidance to daily work and data collection
• Focusing on E2E-process and reporting to increase service and product transparency
by incorporating more GIS and Power BI
• Revealing to business more about location
