IntroductionSince the first operating license for the

telecommunication service was issued by the

Nigeria Communication Commission about a

decade ago, the Nigeria telecom industry has

witnessed a rapid expansion

Introduction contdMany of the facilities are being deployed to

support broadband digital network for

ubiquitous, high bandwidth, digital

connectivity to end users as the basis for

high-speed, digital, interactive, multimedia

services

GIS in Telecommunication management The use of GIS in the telecommunication network management is

informed by;

Rapid expansion of telecommunication infrastructure in the urban

environment

Increasing dependant of social and business transactions on information

communication technologies

Need for effective management of the infrastructure

Increased market competition

Need for efficient and effective service provision

Telecommunication Network Architecture

The fixed wired technology is particularly

useful for provisioning of high-speed data

services

This is because it is implemented using the

fibre optic technology which is not affected by

weather conditions.

Page 7: GIS AS TOOL FOR TELECOMMUNICATION NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGEMENT

The high-speed data network is composed of fibre

optic cables which forms the backbone of the network

It connects major cities and allows the network to

function as a unit

Fibre optic cables are also used within the city in

linking MDFs

The MDF could be described as the core/access

network interface

The cross connect cabinet (CCC) is considered as

the segment between primary and secondary cables

The Distribution Point (DP) is the last point before

the subscriber home

GIS in network Infrastructure ManagementGeographic information system is used as network inventory

and infrastructure management tool in the access network

It correctly represents the network elements in the form of

maps

Captures all attribute data of the elements

Fault localization

Report generation
