Abducting Spaces Thesis_Venice, Italia

In this thesis I am investigating new ways to generate spatial conditions through a process that I am calling “Abducting Spaces.” The discipline of Landscape Architecture often applies the Japanese idea of “Borrowing Space” or “Borrowing Landscapes” which is defined as perceptually expanding garden space by framing a surrounding view. This idea was tool that helped to form my investigation. However, this concept does not go far enough.Abducting space does not simply borrow space, it takes, and the taken space reacts to the aggression through tactics specific tactics and serategies. Architectural abduction is the forcible enclosure of one space by another foreign body, which results in new spatial configurations for both.Space is a quality bound up in perception, where space is perceived vis-a-vie spatial boundar-ies that feedback into perception, in terms of variations of visual and tactile properties. Spatial boundaries can be the complete enclosure of a surface or, more loosely speaking, the perceived

boundaries of a city block.The heart of Abducting Spaces redefines strategies for urban planning. The city in its most basic form is a sum of spaces within spaces and voids with voids. Reactive games can take place between neighbors within a city and therefore may create organic growth from within. Organic yet strategic growth inherently occurring in the game ‘GO’, becoming the platform for the develop-ment of a procedure that would facilitate a logic for the abduction of the city. Venice already embodies several levels of abduction. The surrounding lagoons abduct the built city and suggests an existing battle between nature and built environment. I took the plan of venice and made it a modified GO grid that takes into account existing conditions and proceeds to investigate the next few moves toward the total abduction of the city, while producing unfamiliar byproducts bridging space.

RAINWATER COLLECTOR BELOW
Southern California is a naturally arid place; because of this we designed a way to collect both greywater and rainwater/percipitation in order to irrigate the landscape surrounding Chip. The rainwater system works as showen in the graphic below.
The interior of Chip is an open studio with spatial divisions articulated by level change and structural strong walls, which give the space verticality and, therefore, the feel of capaciousness in an otherwise small space. The lighting further reinforces the divisions and hierarchal layering of spaces through layering of lighting types and systems.

Each light on the shear walls and shelf beams was designed to be made of easily acquired parts that are cost effective and easy to put together.
These lights are connected to quick release bike post clamps that are attached to a simple socket and pipe clamp.
All of the lamps are LED with the exception of the range hood and vanity light (which are CFL’S). This affording the whole lighting scheme to stay below 260 W.
Exploring mass, the project seeks to use form-finding tech-niques to create a monolithic structure that aims to blur public and private spaces as well as the notions of interior vs exterior through subtractive processes. It began with a primitive volume, a cube, which due to program-matic pressures was divided into three volumes. Urban pressures then sheared the volumes to the site’s maximum limits. Using subtractive methods, interesting spaces and structural elements were created to estab-lish the formal expression. As the method continued to progress, the affect emerged, creating more interesting effects in the volume, such as the entrance to Grand and the roof terrace where interior and exterior spac-es are blurred.
REC-CENTER_Los Angeles, California
This project is about creating spaces through the use of platforms inspired by extreme sports. Some of these sports include bouldering, high diving/swimming, and indoor skydiving. These activities create differing vertical levels that lead into one another and become modes of trans-portation for the adventurous.Most importantly, this project is an exploration in connecting surrounding buildings and creating secondary levels of circulation that can extend to the urban scale.
LIGHTWEIGHT_Los Angeles, California
Lightweight is a project designed to make the student think about space in a monolithic way (analyzing negative space) and the taking the object and transforming it through the creation of sections. In this project, three site were given to choose from. This project the smallest one of the three (Los Angeles Desk site) was chosen. The project attempt-ed to connect two adjacent buildings through a visual and physical manner while providing spaces for occupants to roam through. Through the use of section transforma-tion was facilitated and varied spaces were created through the process of interpolation.
This early foam model was the basis by which the final product was begotten. The model is a simple half arch that reaches from one building. It also explores the way in which to control and filter light through the second-ary perforation.

The one above is a quarter inch sectional model which further shows the relationship between the exterior walls and the interior. This sectional model shows the transformation from smaller closed space to semi-open larger space. It also begins to show the penetration and invation of the new structure into the existing.

In this model the relationships between these buildings becomes clear. The new design opens up visual and communicative outlets where people interact on a different level and are free to observe and converse with one another while maintaining their own space. This design creates tension that makes for a more interesting environment.
This first drawing is a representation of the object using primitive forms to give it shape.
The prompt for this project was to pick an object which had interesting sectional qualities and reproduce it using Auto Cad and later building a 3D model in Rhino. From the information that was gathered to complete the first drawing the second and third where generated. The second and third drawings are detailed and precise documentation of the object.These drawings dissect the object giving insight into the section and plan views.

This residential Landscape project dealt with a sever slope with poor soil quality. The client hoped that through design and plant selection his garden would be able to flourish and be an agreeable and useful space-- a retreat. Three designs where made, each increasing in complexity and use. The first is a viewing garden with a Catholic labyrinth and an extended patio area with water

feature. The second design adds a terrace with a jacuzzi and a way to physically enjoy the gar-den in a more tactile way. The third design (also the clients favorite) uses terraces and a water feature to visually stimulate the viewer and to make to whole garden physically accessible. In all of these designs top soil would be added to correct current conditions and the plant selection consisted of drought tolerant and some fruit bearing trees.

Perez Rubio-Orozco Residence_Jalisco, MX
This project is a joint effort between a local architect (Miguel Angel Martin Martin) and myself. I helped to develop the massing as well as the windows and gate. The massing is the push and pulling of the facade which counters the symmetrical nature of the program. The first massing proposal (seen below) attempts to integrate a secondary system (the roof rapper) to bind the project together. However in its second and last iteration the rapper fell away in order to keep the conceptual diagram pure. The large window (circulation shaft) and the gate was designed to frame views both inside and
out, playing with the “push and pull” concept on a 2D level. This “play” was done through differing transparencies and reflection.
Building 3 Courtyard _Pomona, California
This design uses curvilinear shapes to create spaces for students to study in small to large groups. It also implements considerations for the site condi-tions as well as helps to mitigate electricity usage by way of solar panels that are designed to col-lect energy to light the courtyard at night. Its amenities include lunch spots and outdoor class-rooms. Also, apart from taking into account the environmental conditions, the people where observes and their circulation tendencies where implemented into the design. The large water feature that meanders through the site is not only there for aesthetic purposes but also helps to define spaces.I really enjoyed creating this de-sign because it was the first time that I truly started to attempt to create a place that was more then simply nice.

This project’s goal was to create a series of spaces that lead in and out of the existing recre-ational center, generating interesting spaces for residents to enjoy, and bring tourism into the town to boost their economy.

In this project I designed a pond and stream that connected to a near by canal. The stream flows throughout the site and connects all programmatic elements.The waterways catch water from field’s run-off and rain water. The bottom of the pond and stream undulates and has tall hollow rods in order to filter out larger debris and channel the water through the hollow rods, creating a humming sound.
NPS: Cimarron Project _Cimarron, N. MexicoThe goal of the project was to design a way to bring people into Cimarron to boost the communities’ economy, and preserve the town’s historical sites. To accomplish this we designed signage with the faces of famous outlaws who passed through or re-sided within this town to draw people from the HWY into the “downtown” area.To encourage people to stay in town, we designed a walking trail that takes people to all of the historical sites. The site where the placement of the trail-head is proposed is to be located in the old part of town, in an empty lot.
This board exhibits two different design alternatives for the trailhead site. The first design is more rectilinear in form, while the second is curvilinear. Despite these differences in form, both designs share many commonalites such as its function and their minimal impact on the land.Below, an enlarged perspective of the second proposed design.
This was part of a construction document package assigned to teach the student how to properly layout a site (dimensioning, labeling, etc.). The documents must always be as clear and accurate as possible to ensure the success of the project.
Construction Layout _ Los Angeles, California
This project encompasses the planting redesign of the landscape surrounding the Sontag resi-dence hall located on the Harvey Mudd campus in Claremont. The planting was to extend to the perimeter of the building, the parking area and a small meditation garden. It was to fit with the character of the rest of the campus and to soften the impact of the parking lot and paving.take into account the existing condition and with the existing conditions in mind pick an appro-priate planting palette. When analyzing this site one can see that the buildings orientation would help dictate the planting scheme because it is situated on a north south axis, which means that for each side of this building, slightly different plants would have to be used. I chose a native plant palette and mixed it with a Mediterranean palette. The Live Oak, American Sweet Gum are the two main trees that I chose to be the backbone of the design.
Sontag Residence Plan _Claremont, California
Both of these works are mixed media. The work on the left is a study on the “self.” The work below is a graphite rendering of a landscape in the Valley of Fire. The bird is a ink drawing that represents the decimation of the wildlife in the region.
