N.B. – Race stopped due to fire on track. The fire occurred when Hartz span while trying to overtake
Lockhart for the lead, the car overturning multiple times and throwing Hartz from the car. Fuel from the
car started four fires along the infield rails, and the flames spread dense clouds of black smoke across
the track. Hartz suffered a deep gash to the head and a broken leg.

Other US events of 1927 "ANYBODY killed yet?" inquired the night editor, settling himself at the desk at 4 o'clock. “No,” the young man at the other tide of
the big square table assured him, "but the auto races aren't over yet".
The reporter deserves no credit for his prophesy. That same expectation, consciously or unconsciously, was shared by the crowd at
the track. That's why the crowd was there. If there had been no casualties, the crowd would have gone away with a vague sense of
disappointment. The reason, of course, could not be admitted consciously. Every spectator carefully "edits" or rationalizes his
reasons in order to avoid offense to the thinking part of his brain, which would disapprove. The disreputable hope is a guarded secret
buried deep below all the ordinary thinking functions of the individual.
But make no mistake, the secret anticipation is there. An automobile traveling at a speed of 55 or 60 miles an hour no longer is a
novel or a particularly interesting spectacle in the United States. Tho racing drivers who participate here are mostly unknown, and
there is no overwhelming curiosity as to which will win. The excellent chance that one or more of them may be killed or injured,
however, fires the public interest. It is this that assures the success of the show.
In Mexico, the crowd attends bull fights. Except for one factor, nothing could be more monotonous or predictable than a bull fight.
Any person who has seen one knows precisely, step by step, the whole rigamarole of the ritual. What the matadors, the picadors, and
the toreadors will do is determined as rigorously as the sequence of the seasons. What the bulls will do, and what will be done to
them, is known absolutely. Where, then, is the drama? Why do the devotees return, again and again, to see a performance so
hackneyed?
Simple enough. There is always a fair chance that one of the performers will be gored by a bull, and this is the exciting possibility
that brings the crowd out for the same old performance, week after week.
Here in the United States, we frown upon bull fights, and rather preen ourselves upon the humaneness of our civilization. Civilization
is an influence that does not greatly change the appetites and motives of human beings, but which does introduce many interesting
ways of concealing them. The ignorant cargadore offends us by his naivete in such matters. His motive is not sufficiently clothed, we
-
can see all too easily what he goes to the bull fight for. Worst of all, when we go to a bull fight, we can not conceal the ugly motive
from ourselves. It is so embarrassingly conspicuous that we can't keep it from obtruding upon the notice of the conscious and more or
less civilized part of our minds.
We must have a more subtle gratification for our bloody appetites. We delight to watch the exploit of the "human fly", worming his
way up the facade of the building where a momentary spell of faintness, a slipping of fingers or toes, means horrible death. It is that
submerged fascination with the idea of the horrible death that holds the crowd in hushed and expectant ecstacy, while the ability to
silence the protests of the civilized mind by saying, "It's his skill and courage we admire", keeps the participation respectable.
And, we hire race race drivers to guide automobiles at high speed aiound small, narrow tracks on which high speed is suicide.
It is uncivilized and disreputable, of course. If this people lives long enough to attain to a more genuine culture, it will blush for this
and similar barbarities. The "If" Is very large, for at no time in the history of the world has any nation possessed more than a small
handful of perfectly civilized persons. S.A.Tucker (Decatur Herald, 5th July 1927)

Robert Tippey was flagged in third place, but on the slow down lap he hit the fence where Jack Pierson had
previously hit and damaged it. An exposed rail punctured Tippey’s car, went through the dashboard and into
the driver. Tippey was still conscious and even waved to the crowd, but died several hours later in
hospital.
