Letter to the editor Re: Random Spartan facts In the column Random Spartan Facts the author Mike Bhangu claims that Spartans where vegetarians. In fact Spartans were anything but vegetarians. There are sever- al accounts from Roman author Aelian and Greek writer Herodotus, among others from that time, who state that Spartans not only ate meat, and lots of it, but that part of their warrior salary was paid in meat rations. Paying warriors and soldiers in part with meat rations was a common custom in ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt. Per- haps Mike Bhangu fell victim to one of the many vegetarian organizations who make the historically erroneous claim that Spartans were “vegan” to promote their agenda of the “perfect” vegan. On Sunday afternoon — with sun streaming through those glorious stained glass windows — A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens was read at Trinity United Church. It was read in dramatic fashion by (from left) David Jennings, Candace Hale, Rev Elaine Diggle and Roger White. It was the start of a yearly tradition, one to keep in mind for next year.
