Attempted abduction The Merritt RCMP were called to an incident at the Diamondvale Elementa- ry school grounds last Thursday, short- ly after 9pm, in relation to a report of an attempted abduction. Three 12-year old girls were reported to have been assault- ed and held against their wills by a male. Merritt RCMP officers converged on the area and took a 37-year old male into custody, the first two officers were on scene within 4 minutes of receiving the call. A taser and knife were seized by police at the scene. The male was held in police custody overnight to await a court appearance the following day. By Friday, BC Prosecution Service ap- proved charges against Merritt resident Jamie Leighton ATWATER (37 years old). Charges include 1 count of Assault with a weapon Section 267(a) CCC; 2 counts of Posses weapon for a danger- ous purpose Section 88(1) CCC; Uttering threats Section 264.1(1)(a) CCC. Coldwater River fire The Kamloops Fire Centre says a wildfire sparked by a vehicle fire on the Coquihalla on Monday, 27km southwest of Merritt is now under control. Origi- nally estimated at 7 hectares, the fire was downgraded to just 3.8 hectares in size. Crews established a guard around the fire Monday, and were not on-site over- night. Smoke may still be visible. Dry Lake fire The Dry Lake wildfire is still classified as out of control but fire fighters have been able to establish a full guard around it, which now measures 21 ha. The cause of this fire is suspected to be lightning. 51 personnel, 10 heavy equipment & 4 helicopters remain on scene, though they “are making good progress“. An Evacuation Alert was issued by the Reg. Dist. of Okanagan-Similkameen Emergency Operations Centre, placing 43 properties under Evacuation Alert, all located along Hwy 5A between McCaf- frey Lake, MacKenzie Lake, Dry Lake, Round Lake and Allison Lake Prov. Park. Nearby fires at Kump Lake and Lar- kin Lakes are currently being held, with no anticipation of further growth. Excerpts from At the Bridge I started on the trail of James Teit in the fall of 1977, and after more that three decades I have only begun to scratch the surface. Indeed, his extensive handwrit- ten notes — on ethnobotany, linguistics, basketry, songs, storytelling, traditional clothing, hunting and fishing traditions, housing, and spiritual traditions — war- rant books of their own. By the end of his life, Teit had amassed some six hundred pages of ethnobotanical notes, only a fraction of which made it into his post- humous publication on the topic. His ex- tensive field notes on songs, all carefully linked to the singers’ names, community affiliations, and photographic portraits, have never been published. His maps of Indigenous territorial boundaries and place names have yet to be fully collated and analyzed. His copious notes on the hundreds of handmade items -buckskin dresses, baskets, fishing nets, bows, ar- rows, snowshoes -in museums across the continent have never been systematically analyzed. Indeed, the western designation “renaissance man” (apart from its obvious colonial connota- tions) does not begin to do justice to the scope of James Teit’s creativity, productivity, and insight. — Wendy Wickwire, Preface, At The Bridge: James Teit and an anthropology of belonging, UBC Press 2019 Where To Change?
