The mare had already produced the likes of outstanding perform- ers Grade I winner Harmony Lodge and GII Arkansas Derby winner Graeme Hall, and it was her multiple stakes winning daughter Win’s Fair Lady (Dehere) who stole the show at yester- day’s session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale in Lexington. Spencer Plummer, bidding on be- half of the ClassicStar partnership, went to $2.2 million for the six-year- old mare, carrying a foal by the successful young stallion Giant’s Cause- way. Blackburn Farm, the operation of Michael T. Barnett, explained why the mare was offered at auction as opposed to joining the Sabine broodmare band. “She’s in foal to Giant’s Causeway, and Giant’s Causeway got so hot,” the consignor explained. “And we own the two-year-old filly out of the mare [Aug. 12 maiden winner Win McCool, by Giant’s Causeway]. But it was really on the strength of Giant’s Causeway that we decided that it was a really good time to bring her to the marketplace. She exceeded our expectations. We were hoping to get a million.” For ClassicStar, the purchase was a virtual no-brainer. Very active at this venue over the past several years, they acquired Win Crafty Lady, in foal to Giant’s Causeway, for $900,000 at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale in 2003. “She’s a beautiful filly, a stakes winner, half to a Grade I winner and her mother’s a stakes winner,” said Plummer, the president of ClassicStar. “I think the market is really strong. We had to stretch ourselves being on this mare, but I think it’s worth the stretch. We own the family and it makes all our fillies more valuable.” Plummer indicated that the 2004 foal, a colt by Giant’s Causeway, is currently in training in Ireland. Here’s the Scoop.... Jim Tafel has owned his fair share of outstandingracemares, including the likes of champion BansheeBreeze, MGISP Til Forbid and the latter’s graded stakeswinning daughter Scoop (Gone West). In an effort to

slightly reduce his broodmareband, Tafel entered theseven-year-old mare into thesale. She rewarded her owneryesterday, realizing a bid of$2.1 million from CharlotteWeber’s Live Oak Stud. “I’min ecstacy,” the venerableKentucky horseman com-mented. “It was the righttime to sell her. I have threefoals of hers and the first onelooks like a real runner. We’rejust thrilled with the sale--itfar exceeded our expecta-tions, it really did.” Tafel wasthrilled that Weber thoughtenough of Scoop to add her

to an already powerful broodmare band. When told whothe winning bidder was, Tafel said, “Oh, she was?” andexclaimed, “Oh yeah! I’m delighted.” Scoop is alreadythe dam of the two-year-old Forest Wildcat fillyCoolwind, who broke her maiden at first asking atArlington and has since raced exclusively in stakes, finishing third in the GIII Arlington-Washington Breed-ers’ Cup Lassie S. and the GIII Pocahontas S. last week-end. John Rasmussen of Live Oak Stud explained whatattracted him to the mare. “It’s an active family,” hesaid. “Her first foal is real active right now. We like thefact that she’s a younger mare, she’s carrying a fillyand it looks like her fillies can run. And I think she’s agreat addition to the broodmare band.” Consigned byMill Ridge Sales, the dark bay is carrying a filly by ElPrado (Ire).

Japanese Triple Crown winnerDeep ImpactJAIR photo

Making an Impact... Standing at the left-side entrance to the pavilion andpropped against the wall to the press box, agentFederico Barberini kept his ear pressed to his cell phone, gesturing to the bid spotter once, then again, thenagain. When the dust settled, the young Italian found

himself the last one standingon the Arazi mare Glint inHer Eye, a half sister to re-cent Japanese Triple Crownhero Deep Impact (Jpn)(Sunday Silence). The win-ning bid was $1,050,000.Barberini declined to saywho he was representing.Asked to comment on theBrookdale Sales consignee, who sold in foal to EmpireMaker, Barberini said,

“She’s from a very good family. The dam was a verygood mare in Europe. It’s a lovely pedigree. You reallycouldn’t ask for more on a catalog page.” Out of Ger-man Group 1 winner Wind in her Hair (Ire) (Alzao), whoalso was second in the G1 Epsom Oaks in 1994, Glintin Her Eye (hip 582) sports a truly international pedi-gree. In addition to Deep Impact, she’s a half to BlackTide (Jpn), a stakes winner of over $900,000 in Japan, and to American graded stakes winner Veil of Avalon.Barberini acknowledged that Deep Impact’s recent winin the third leg of the Japanese Triple Crown, theKikura Sho (Japanese St Leger), didn’t make acquiringhis sister any easier. “It’s obviously a very good horse,so that had to make difference,” he said. Barberini wasalso in on the action for Glint in Her Eye’s weanling fillyby El Prado (Ire), who followed her into the ring as 583,but failed to match Katsumi Yoshida’s $410,000 offer.Barberini said that Glint in Her Eye would go to Europe.Or, more accurately, back to Europe. After racing inEngland at two and three, Glint in Her Eye was pur-chased by Brookdale’s Fred Seitz for 135,000gns at theTattersalls December sale in 2002 while in foal toDanehill Dancer (Ire).

Glint in Her Eye - Hip 582 cont.

The resulting foal, named Jeremy, was recently sec-ond in the Oct. 22, Listed totesport.com S. atDoncaster. Seitz shipped Glint in Her Eye to the U.S.and bred her to Dixieland Band in 2003 and El Pradolast year. Seitz had good luck with another Europeanimport earlier in the day. Seitz had acquired hip 491,the Bering (GB) mare Bayberry (UAE), for i230,000during a 2003 excursion to the Deauville Decembersale. Yesterday, the five-year-old stakes-placed chest-nut resold for $925,000 to Margaret O'Toole. Bayberrywas the lone mare in the catalog in foal to Montjeu(Ire), whose three Classic winners in Europe this yearled to his stud fee increasing to i125,000 for 2006.

Home Court Advantage... One of the last horses to go through the ring yester-day was also one with perhaps the largest pedigree onday two. Hip 601 was an attractive mare by Storm Catout of 1996 Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Jewel Prin-cess (Key to the Mint), which was knocked down for afinal bid of $1.4 million to AGS Thoroughbreds from theconsignment of Craig and Holly Bandoroff’s DenaliStud. She is carrying a foal, on an early cover date, byGone West. “We were very happy with the price,” saidCraig Bandoroff. “We had a modest reserve on herbecause it was for a man that races and doesn’t havemuch of an interest in breeding. It’s an example thathappens time and again of a great physical payingdividends and helping a horse bring a very good price. She was very well conformed for a Storm Cat and shehad a little bit of race record, but the physical is sort ofwhat got everyone interested in her.” A full sister toOne Nice Cat, the four-year-old raced in the colors ofAlnoff Stables, winning her lone start at two beforereturning from an eight-month absence to take a Chur-chill allowance test last May. Third in an overnighthandicap at Arlington the following month, she wasthird in the GIII Iowa Oaks in her lone try at two turnsin July in what would prove to be her final start.

Happy Ticket at SaratogaAdam Coglianese photo

Happy Trails.... One of the great stories of Thoroughbred racing in2005 has been Louisiana-bred Happy Ticket (Anet).Owned by 61-year-old Stewart Madison, a co-owner ofMalaco Records, a production company which manu-

factures and distributes R & Band gospel music, the bay wonher first eight career starts inthe Palmetto state. She tookher game to the next level bywinning the GIII Chicago Breed-ers’ Cup H. June 18. After fin-ishing runner-up to MadcapEscapade in the GII PrincessRooney H. in July, HappyTicket got back on the beamwith a 5 1/2-length success

over Pleasant Home in the GI Ballerina S. Aug. 28.Second, beaten a half-length to Ashado in the GIBeldame S. Oct. 1, the four-year-old filly was a distant11th in the GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff Oct. 29 and hassubsequently undergone throat surgery. Soon after theChicago effort, David Greathouse of Four Star Sales, who had purchased Happy Ticket’s dam, Love andHappiness (Septieme Ciel), for $45,000 at the 1994Keeneland September sale, suggested to Madison thathe consider entering the mare, in foal to Not For Love, for the November sale. Madison obliged and the deci-sion paid dividends yesterday, as Love and Happinesswas hammered down for $650,000 to Gaines-Gentry,agent. “I prefer to race, but you have to sell from timeto time to keep your business straight and I thoughtthis was a good time to do it and it turned out to bejust that. I’m thrilled with the result,” Madison com-mented. “I still own Happy Ticket, a full sister and ahalf sister, so I still have a female part of the family.”Happy Ticket, the winner of $782,260 to date, arrivedback in Louisiana on Sunday and will get a few weeksoff before returning to the track. She stays in trainingwith Andy Leggio for 2006, with an eye on the Breed-ers’ Cup Distaff at Churchill Downs.

Capeside Lady Brings $700K.... So Madcapt Stables’ Capeside Lady (Cape Town)elicited a $700,000 bid from Mike Akers, who operated

Dapple Bloodstock. “I didn’t thinkwe’d get her for that price,” Akersadmitted. “This market’s a little onand off. We thought she’d be in the$750,000 to $1-million range, soI’m quite happy with the final price.”Akers had not yet had a chance todecide whether the winner of thisyear’s GII Molly Pitcher Breeders’Cup H. would stay in training or beretired to stud. “We’ll give her alittle time, check the X-rays and let

her tell us,” he commented. In addition to herMonmouth victory, Capeside Lady added to her valuethis fall, finishing a very game third in the GIJuddmonte Spinster S. at Keeneland. Formerly trainedby Todd Pletcher, the four-year-old sports a record of17-7-1-3 with earnings of $694,760. Akers has alsobeen busy purchasing mares for several clients whosebroodmare bands he manages.

Pedigree Power... A weanling filly by Giant’s Causeway from the familyof Tale of the Cat and Johannesburg elicited a$750,000 offer from wine magnate Jess Jackson.Bidding front and center in the sales pavilion and withbloodstock advisor John Moynihan sitting to his left,Jackson landed hip 524, a daughter of the unracedCastanea (Horse Chestnut {SAf}). Castanea is a halfsister to top young sire Tale of the Cat and freshmanMinardi, and to Myth, the dam of European all-starJohannesburg. “If you look at that female side, there’smore sires in there than most any dam I know,” ac-knowledged Jackson. “Her pedigree’s immaculate. Andon the sire side, he’s the hottest sire in the sophomoreranks. There are a lot of Cats out there, but he’s one ofthe best.” Jackson said it wasn’t merely pedigree thatmade the chestnut an attractive offering. “Her confor-mation was great,” said Jackson, who added, “We’llrest her and let her grow, then put her into training.”Hip 524 was consigned by Indian Creek, which alsobred the filly.

Blue Collar to Blue Blood?.... Puxa Saco (Dehere) didn’t attract much attention inher first two visit to the Keeneland sales, selling for just$7,500 as a weanling in 2000 and for $8,500 to Rich-ard Rowan of Florida in September 2001. The five-year-old mare, fresh off the track, has come a long waysince then and sold for $875,000 during Monday’sopening day of trade. The winning bidder was theNorthwest Farms of Jerry Paxton. “I’m elated,” saidRowan, who credited consignor Hinkle Farms with anexcellent job of preparing the mare for the sale. “Wewere very happy with what we got. I’m most happybecause [trainer] Janine Sahadi did a great job with thehorse and now she’ll be bred to a really nice horse. IfI’d kept her, I’d have bred her to $35,000 stallions--thisway somebody’s going to breed her to A.P. Indy orStorm Cat and maybe produce a champion.” Despiteher bargain-basement price tag, the attractive chestnutbecame a dual stakes winner at two, and celebrated herbest season at the races this year, winning the GIIIDesert Stormer H. and finishing third by 3/4 of a lengthin the GI Humana Distaff H. Ben Kessinger, director ofsales and marketing for Hinkle Farms, added, “She’s abeautiful filly, she’s got a great top line and obviouslyher race record speaks for itself. I think she’s going tobe a really top broodmare. She really has an athleticlook to her.” Puxa Saco retires with six wins from 24starts and earnings of $400,575.

Sales Officials Hardly Dismayed By Off Session... Despite a dip in all three statistical categories duringyesterday’s session, officials at Keeneland were hardlydowntrodden. “We knew going in that [yesterday] wasnot as strong as [Monday],” said Keeneland Director ofSales Geoffrey Russell. “The composition of the [No-vember] catalogue varies from year to year and con-signors on Monday had a stronger hand Monday thanthey did on Tuesday,” he added, pointing out that lastyear’s second session was highlighted by a draft ofmares from Denali Stud for Bob and Beverly Lewis.Overall figures remain strong. Despite a three-percentdecrease in overall gross receipts, the two-sessionaverage is up by 10.5 percent and the median is aheadby a robust 35 percent.

One for the Books... The action at the Keeneland Sales pavilion could getoff to a fast start today when hip 631 strides into thering. That’s when Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency consignsGISW Lady Shirl (That’s a Nice), the dam of this year’sGI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational S. winner Shake-speare. “She’s a unique offering, being the dam of acurrent Grade I winner,” said Hill ‘n’ Dale’s John Sikura.“She was a great racemare and is a proven producer--she’s pretty special.” A model of consistency, LadyShirl won 19 of 41 starts and was second another ninetimes. Her biggest victory came in the 1991 GI FlowerBowl H., and she had nine other stakes victories to hercredit while earning just over $950,000. After beingretired in 1994 as a seven-year-old, she was entered inthe 1995 Keeneland January, but she failed to meet herreserve and was led out of the ring unsold at$190,000. Finding a buyer three years later atKeeneland November, she was knocked down for$110,000, but again found herself at this sale in 2000,where she was purchased, in foal toTheatrical (Ire), forjust $90,000 by Triple J. Fast forward five years andthat $90,000 looks like a pretty good deal. The foal shewas carrying by Theatrical turned out to be Shake-speare, who returned from injury this year to win theGII Belmont Breeders’ Cup H. and the Turf Classic inconsecutive starts before losing his unbeaten record inthe GI Breeders’ Cup Turf. Lady Shirl is carrying a fullsibling to Shakespeare, and her weanling filly by SmartStrike follows her into the ring. “She’s a beautifulwalker and very correct,” Sikura said of hip 632. “She’sa very nice filly.”

Grade I Winner on Day 3.... It doesn’t happen too often, but today’s third day ofbidding features a recent Grade I winner. Lane’s EndFarm consigns the three-year-old filly Sweet Talker(Stormin Fever) this afternoon on behalf of owners Eliah

and Lisa Kahn. Now under thecare of trainer Helen Pitts, thedark bay filly has proven to beone of the best of her generationon the turf, with five victories, asecond and a third in seven triesover that surface. A stakes win-ner at two, Sweet Talker tookthis year’s Edgewood S. May 6and, two starts back, posted a 1 1/4-length success in the Mar-

tha Washington Breeders’ Cup S. at Laurel Sept. 24.Extended an invitation to the GI Queen Elizabeth IIChallenge Cup at Keeneland Oct. 15, she made themost of the opportunity to take a blanket finish by anose. Pitts is hoping to run her charge in Saturday’s GIIMrs. Revere S. at Churchill if the filly does not meet herreserve. “The thing about her right now is that she hasnever been doing so well,” said Pitts. “I’ve never seenher like this. She’s happy and moving unbelievable. She’s just on top of her game right now.”

BEST AVAILABLE After what was undeniably a blockbuster sale atFasig-Tipton Sunday night--the gross was up 56 per-cent--the tone for Keeneland Monday was really, proba-bly, set by the very first horse, Hip 1, Ifyouprefersilver. Her name aside, she had been offered as a maiden marelast November, but was bought back for $175,000.She came back this year, in foal to the $75,000 stallionForestry, and sold for $500,000. Even allowing forexpenses, the cost of money, etc., it's at least an 80-percent jump in value from last year. Another example is Chimichurri, a Grand Slam marewho won a Grade III race as a two-year-old, placed infour other graded stakes at two and three, and earned$269,000. She sold in the Keeneland November sale in2003, late in her three-year-old year, for $675,000--plenty of money, but she was a real knockout, likesome of those Grand Slams are. Fast forward to November, 2005. Only two thingshave changed on the page: a new stakes-placed earnerof $109,938 by Skip Away under the first dam; and herown earnings had shown as $251,000 in 2003, so herfinal earnings, shown in 2005, were $18,000 higher.Other than that, she shows in the catalogue a 2005filly by Vindication (not catalogued), and she sells infoal to Unbridled's Song on a February 28 cover. Soshe has cost $675,000; two years in keep and insur-ance; $50,000 for the Vindication stud fee; and$125,000 for the Unbridled's Song. I know Unbridled'sSong is hot as a pistol, but even he isn't this hot:Chimichurri, this time through, brought $2.1 million. The buyer two years ago has to have more than dou-bled their investment, and they have the Vindicationfilly to boot. That's how hot this market looked Mon-day: a mare bought two years ago for $675,000, carry-ing a $125,000 stud fee, brought $2.1-million, with nomaterial change in the catalogue page.

But, then, what happened yesterday? Whereas theMonday gross had been up 21 percent from the corre-sponding session last year--after Fasig's gross Sundaywas up 56 percent--yesterday's gross dropped 27 per-cent, from almost $81.5 million to $59.3 million. Theaverage dropped 20 percent, from $386,194, to$308,943, having been up 43 percent on Monday. In all, Keeneland Book 1 saw 372 horses sell (a 12-percent drop from the 424 sold in Book 1 last year) fora total of $157,438,000, and an average of $423,220.The Book 1 gross was actually down 3 percent, thoughthe average was up 10 percent. But that doesn't tellthe whole story, either: add in Fasig, and you have 484sold in the November sales' first three days, for a totalof $189,621,000, and an average of $391,779. Lastyear, Fasig's Sunday sale plus Keeneland Book 1 had625 sold, for a total of $183,149,300, and an averageof $293,039. We had 22 percent fewer horses sell thisyear, for a $6.5-million increase in gross (4 percent),but a 34-percent rise in average. As I said in yester-day's column, I actually think that 30-percent increasein average is probably about right; certainly judgingfrom the two Monday horses cited above, you'd think itwas more than that, if anything, not less. The explanation for these seemingly wild gyrationsare actually dead simple: it's the catalogue. It's come tobe known as the 'November Disclaimer', and it is sim-ply that there can be much more dramatic variations inmixed sale catalogues, in terms of pedigree, than inyearling catalogues. It's rare that this phenomenon isdemonstrated so dramatically as in this year's Book 1,but it is nothing more nor less than a far better cata-logue on Monday than Tuesday. All the combatants wespoke to, jousting in the back chutes, said it was everybit as tough "for what was there" Tuesday as Monday, and I've no doubt that will continue. It's the 'BestAvailable' principle: people show up with money tospend, and they're going to spend it on the best avail-able. Cont. p9

Sure, Ashado sets the standard, but the consensus isuniversal that the Tuesday session, this year, was farinferior to Monday on paper. That's why it was downso much: it wasn't the market, it was the catalogue. Infact, it does rather look like owning broodmares ranksright up there with owning boats and art these days. What's really been happening here is that people havebeen spending huge money and buying the best avail-able; I think saying the market is up 30 percent mightbe underestimating it. Unusually, the leading first-year sires of weanlingshave not been heavily represented in Book 1. Mineshafthas only had one weanling sell so far ($160,000), Em-pire Maker none. Hill 'n' Dale's unbeaten championtwo-year-old, Vindication, has been the runaway leaderamong his sire group in terms of weanling sales: he hadseven average $213,857, in Book 1. Aldebaran, cham-pion sprinter in 2003, also had a big boost when hisfirst sale weanling, a colt out of filly/mare turf cham-pion Soaring Softly, brought $485,000.

Among sires with their first mares in-foal selling,Speightstown, with nine in-foal mares averaging$450,000, and Smarty Jones, who had 16 average$335,000, were most prominent. Pleasantly Perfect, towhom Folklore's dam, Contrive, sold in foal, did there-fore have three in-foal mares average over $1,150,000,but that is a bit of a 'false positive'. In-foal mare aver-ages do really only tell you, though, what type of maresthe stallion was bred to.

SURGERY FOR SORCERER’S STONE Sorcerer’sStone (Gulch), winner of the Sept. 18 GIII Arlington-Washington Futurity, will undergo surgery to remove abone chip in his left ankle, forcing the colt to miss an

intended start in the GII KentuckyJockey Club S. at Churchill DownsNov. 26. The chip was detectedfollowing a sixth-place finish toStevie Wonderboy in the GI Breed-ers’ Cup Juvenile at Belmont ParkOct. 29. “We X-rayed him and havedecided to stop on him and do alittle ankle surgery on him,” saidtrainer Patrick Byrne. “It’s a very

simple procedure. It’s just a little fragment.” Byrne, who indicated that the colt will be out for 60 daysbefore resuming training at Gulfstream Park, will targethis charge toward next year’s spring classics. “Wethought it was best to stop on him now and do theright thing by him,” Byrne added. “We’d have liked tohave gone to the Jockey Club, but if you get later intothe year you’re kind of pushed going into the spring ofnext year. God willing, if he’s good enough to be aDerby horse, we certainly want to give him the oppor-tunity to get there.”

MILLENARY RETIRED TO KNOCKHOUSESTUD Millenary (GB) (Rainbow Quest--Ballerina {Ire},

by Dancing Brave) has been retired from racing and will

stand the 2006 breeding season at Sean Kinsella’s

Knockhouse Stud in Co. Kilkenny, Ireland. Millenary

notched 11 group victories in his career, including the

G1 St. Leger S. “Like many racing fans, I have been

following the career of Millenary closely and have al-

ways been impressed by the sheer class he showed,

not only when winning the St. Leger, but also this year

as an eight-year-old when he cantered over his rivals in

both the Yorkshire and Lonsdale Cups,” Kinsella com-

mented. “He has a superb pedigree and I have no doubt

that he will pass his class and looks on to his stock.”

Bred and owned by Neil Jones of Abergwaun Farm, the

eight-year-old retires with 12 wins from 35 starts and

£958,432 in earnings.
