THE GIANT LIST OF ONLINE TRAVEL COMPANIES BY WHITE SKY HOSPITALITY

1

The world of hotels and travel is constantly

changing.

New ideas and business models are

replacing existing ones quickly.

And this has made finding a quick reference

guide to online intermediaries like OTAs

difficult.

Even hotels with resources are finding it

tricky to navigate through this flux.

And if you are an independent hotel owner or

a sales manager who also is in charge of

online distribution, it is even harder.

2

Why is it so important for hotels to understand

this online landscape?

The reason is simple – the better the

understanding of what the right channels are,

how they operate and which segments they

target, the better the sales reach of the hotel.

With dramatic increases in online and mobile

hotel bookings, can hotels continue to rely on

their traditional understanding of OTAs?

We venture not..

3

We had to answer one question first as we

started - what type of companies should and

could come under this list?

For practical purposes, we have taken the

approach that they qualify for the list if they

sell inventory as a third party on behalf of

the hotel. (again there are exceptions but….)

4

As we started building the list, the need for further

classification was clear.

What is an online travel agency? Is it just a well

known site like Booking.com? Or are group booking

sites included?

What about metasearch and last minute booking

apps? Do airline websites that offer hotel bookings

qualify? Or only if they work independently?

5

To address this, we have classified them into broad categories. And then there are those that defy

classification. How about Accor hotels for one? Is it a hotel chain or an OTA or a hotel collection or a

marketing consortium?

Even classification is a moving target! 6

Of course with such a vast array of

choices, it brings you to the next and

bigger question. What are the

parameters that a hotel can and should

use to choose the right types of

booking intermediaries to work with?

This and the evolving world of hotel

technology will form related parts of

this work.

If you would like to know when these

are published, just join the list here to

be notified.

AIRLINE WEBSITES

Many leading airlines have a section which allows travellers to book hotels.

Very few of them manage their own hotel inventory and partner with leading

OTAs like Booking.com, Expedia and HRS.

Listed are popular airlines which have a dedicated hotel booking feature. Also

mentioned (where known) are their OTA partners. If your hotel destination is

being served by these airlines, then it is worth checking if your hotel is listed

on their partner OTAs.

EMERGING MARKET OTAs

A very exciting and chaotic arena in the world of travel. Some regions have

developed fast like Latin America, China and India – the others offer enormous

new opportunities.

Some of them can be difficult to work with, as they evolve, but these emerging

MOBILE BOOKINGS

Interest in Mobile Booking Apps have increased substantially over the last few

years. All the major OTAs like Booking.com and Hotels.com have their own

successful apps. And so do the meta search giants like Trivago and Kayak.

Apart from this, a few other standalone apps have also made their mark. A

new trend is also in the booking of day use rooms.

INTERNET DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS (IDS)

We cannot get through this list without a mention of the Internet Distribution

System (IDS) platforms. Arguably, they do not belong in this list as technology

providers. However, this is another area of convergence in hotel distribution.

IDS Platforms are a collection of online travel websites, travel & travel

companies, wholesalers and airline websites that enable travellers to make

reservations. They also allow hotels to pro-actively manage global distribution

including GDS.

FOOTNOTES & DISCLAIMER

• Our goal with this giant list is to provide some clarity on the online travel booking marketplace by grouping

companies based on their business models and market segments.

• The industry is moving way too fast for any such list to be completely accurate or stay current. We plan to keep our

blog updated with new discoveries as and when possible.

• We have tried to keep the lists quality driven based on industry experience. However what works for one hotel may

not work for another and we take no responsibility. This is also not an analysis or report – more of an observation and

a high level classification and listing of online travel intermediaries.

• Time, space and design limitations mean that we may have missed out on some good companies. But despite that we

hope that hotels will find this list helpful to plan an effective online and offline strategy
