Dear AUce May,

This past week I finalLy got to Durham, Connecticut, and have those excitingresults to report to you. I also discovered why the index wasn't microfilmed when Ivisited the Town Hall there, a charming cQd building (once a church!) that faces thetown green, with old houses around it. This was typical, unspcdled New EnglandvDlage, and once I reached the inner, windowless room at the back - past the pretty, lighted Christmas tree -1 was introduced to the card file system that they use! Eachland record is recorded and indexed with a card for the grantors file and one for thegrantees file, and has been done this way from the beginning! Tm not totally sure theyate dcdng it that way, but up to as late as 1936 they were, because I saw cardswith that date. It makes it extrem^y difficult to use, and while it would be possibleto microfilm the index cards one after the other, as the Census soundex cards havebeen done, it would be costly and time consuming. Unhappily, the ink is fading on the

csards, and they will become unreadable after a time - some are very feinteven now.

The record books have been handled w^ and are in good condition. Some c£the vcQumes have been treated for preservation and are beautiful to use. Again, theproblem is the feding ink, which makes them hard to read in the original and almostimposible on microfilm - as I had already discovered when I tried to use the microfilmcopy at the Connecticut State Library.

There were 12 deeds for your William Augustus STRONG and Abigail CRANEcouple, and what I hc^jed woiild develep for William ~ cQues to parentage - turned outto develop for Abigail CRANE. I should mention that CRANE, as well as STRONG,was aj^>arenitly an important name in the town. I will give the abstracted deeds inchroncQogical order, by date of the deed, not necessarily in the order in which theyappear in the land record books. Sometimes deeds are not recorded, for one reason oranother, until a later date. And sometimes special land use documents, such as leases, appear in a different vdUime from warranty deeds.

1) 12/68 - grantor l^c BARTHOLOMEW of Durfiam, Middlesex County, CT, for$216.67, conveyed to grantee William Augustus STRONG of said Durham, "one certainpiece cf land lying in the southwest part of said Durham containing one acre and ahalf with a dwelling house and bam thereon standing is bounded south and east onhighway every other way on Joseph CAMP's land." My note says 17 Oct.1803, but not whether that was the date of the deed, the acknowledgement, or therecording. However, Orren D. CRANE, Abdgail's brother, held the other half of theland sold to Eliphaz NETTLETON. Considering the sequence of the pages, they wereprobably all recorded together.

These land records teH an interesting story c£ the young ooupile, pcobabLymarrying just the time WiUiam Augustus STRONG made his first purchase o£land. Three of the deeds provide some feituly relationships for AhLgail CRANE, in that^e inherited apparently ficom Rejoice CRANE, definitely from John CRANE with theCourt in that deed being the Probate Court, most likely, and was the sister of OrrinD. CRANE. All good leads to fbUow. I did have the two deeds copied, that mentionedhedrship bo Rejoice CRANE and John CRANE, but as you can see, the pale ink madethe first one hard bo read.

I did look at the Harbour Collection bound volume copy of Durham VitalRecords, and found:

John CRANE m. Abigail CAMP, 7 Apr. 1762 (p.381) Children bom to John & Abigail:Clarissa, dau., b. 31 July 1762, bp. 1 Aug. (1762) (p.312,381)Oorondates, son, b. 10 Nov. 1763, bp. 13 Nov. (1763), d. 12 May 1766

(p. 326, 398)Rejoice, son, b. 31 May 1778 (p. 399)

Since it is possible tbat Abigail CRANE, born 1783, was a later daughter of thiscouple, I also just checked to see if an Abigail CAMP was listed as being bom, andfound:

Abigail CAMP, dau. Eleazer CAMP, bp. 26 July 1741 (p. 279)

The very nice staff person also acquainted me with a book of copiedinscriptions from the Old Cemetery in Durham, and that is where the #870 tombstoneinscription comes from. This is a three^ring notebook, with photostat pages. I copiedthe entries for STRONG:854. Mr. Thomas STRONG who d. 30 Sept. 1735, age 75.855. I also looked for CRANE, and copied the first five, then skipped to two having to dowith John and AbigaiL (CAMP) CRANE's family;240. Deacon Henry CRANE, d. 11 Apr. 1741 in his 64th year.241. Mrs. Abigail, late wife of Deacon Henry CRANE d. 31 Aug. 1754 age 78 yrs.

I further made a note fiom a copy of a Survey of Architecture, Durham, in theintroduction - as it dealt with the original settlement - that among the earliestfamilies, the CAMPS were firom Milford and the CRANES from Killing worth. In thenext wave of settlers, say fiom 1718-1728, the STRONGS were given as fromNorthampton, Massachusstts.

Tuesday moming, Dec. 9, '86Dear Alice May,

I had gotten that far in my report to you, all ready but for the sign-^off, whenI was interupted, and did not get back to it again Sunday evening. On Monday, I wentto the Connecticut State Library in Hartford, and even though I had used up all yourresearch time, I simply could not resist taking it the logical next step. So thisaddendum to your report wilL -bdl you the exciting news that yes, AbigaiL CRANE whomarried William Augustus STRONG was indeed the daughter of John and AbigaiL(CAMP) CRANE, orphaned at a young age as you will see.

From CSL microfilin #1022381, box #733, Middletown Probate District, I havemade some jhotocopdes for you that straighten out AbigaiL's family. In Packet no.1089, on that film, the will of John CRANE of Durham, 1784, clearly gives his wifeAbigail and mentions children. The statement by the witnesses tells you that JohnCRANE died in the small pox hospital, statement dated 15 June 1784. The distributionof this estate ^ows eldest son Zelek CRANE, son Timothy Botchford CRANE, sonRejoyoe CRANE, son Orondalois CRANE, daughter Clarissa the wife cf Curtiss BATES,daughter Miranda CRANE, and daughter Abigail CRANE. The distribution is dated 24June 1790.

In 1788, on 6 October, Zelek CRANE, with Henry CRANE of Durham as surety, was named as Administrator on his AbLgail CRANE's estate. The Inventory of herestate, copy endosed, came to 32 pounds. It names her as Widow Abigail CRANE. Thedistribution cf her estate on 21 March 1791 was to Zelek CRANE, Elam CRANE,Timothy Botchford CRANE, Orindatis CRANE, Clarissa the wife cf Curtis BATES,Miranda CRANE, and Abigail CRANE, a wonder if I might have missed the page inJohn CRANE'S distribution which listed Elam CRANE, I could check if you wish.)

(Zleafly, with both parents deceased, the youngest children needed guardians.

Page 27: gi^-grandfathergrievesdocshare04.docshare.tips/files/24563/245638280.pdf · 2017. 2. 22. · connectionto LadyDi, ChiUico-theanstwice failed to persuade herto visitOhio, Grabbsaid.

So I have enclosed the guardian's bond for Abigail CRANE, about 8 years of age, further identified as a daughter c£ Jno. CRANE dec'd, with Joseph CAMP named asher guardian, dated 7 May 1792. Joseph CRANE was also named as guardian toOrmdatus CRANE Qater he apparently became Orren D, CRANE) on 7 May 1792, withthe child then about 11 years cf age and not able to choose his own guardian. Atfourteen, when he could choose, he chose Samud. FOWLER of GuDford, with FrederickCRANE of Durham as surety, to be his guardian, dated 27 Apidl 1795.

One last piece to the puzzle, AhLgaiL CRANE's brother. Rejoice CRANE, haddied by 30 October 1797 when James ROSE and Curtis BATES were namedAdministrators on his estate. The distribution of his estate, dated 19 April 1799,included "To Abigail the 3d sister."

I have included in the photocopies, from the same microfiLm, the will of HenryCRANE of Durham, wife Mercy, 7 June 1759, in which he bequeathes to his sons ElihuCRANE, John CRANE, and Henry CRANE, and daughters Phebe CRANE, MaryCRANE, Concurrence CRANE, and Ann CRANE.

Finally, I am including some vital events from the Harbour Collection at thestate library, because I just couldn't resist some fidllow-up on these obvious leads. Forwhat you can do with them, here they are:1) John CRANE, s. Henry & Mercey, b. 1 July 1741, bp. 5 July 1741, Durham VR

I am not ^ying that all of these are your direct ancestors, because in at leastone case you would have to choose between Henry CRANE bom 1671 and^ HenryCRANE bom 1677 - unless the earlier Henry CRANE died and a subsequent child w^named Henry and grew up. The trail was just too tempting to fcOlow, and you wiHhave much to enjcy herel
